This week, Richie and I chat about why it can be helpful to revisit previous art styles or processes in your art practice or business. This idea emerged as I've rediscovered and fallen back in love with the playful style of art from my very first online class, The Melting Pot. We also discuss the challenges we've faced in defining a style and approach for our YouTube channel and why we're returning to simple, short videos like we used to share when we first got started. We hope you enjoy the episode! Remember, the creative path is anything but linear—it's okay to shed things that aren't serving you well and return to something that you loved or something that was working well and maybe didn't need to be changed in the first place! Breaks are wonderful and necessary, but they can also make it hard to get back into your artistic groove. This week, Richie and I discuss this challenge and offer practical guidance and encouragement to help you turn your creative drought into a fresh, exciting chapter. Discover the importance of taking that first step, embracing risk-taking, optimising your workspace, and selecting a project that challenges but doesn't overwhelm. If you've been struggling to find your creative flow, you won't want to miss this one! Mentioned: Episode 153: Making Time for Art and Protecting Your Creative Energy! Is it nostalgia? Maybe I've got those rose-tinted glasses on again. Do you ever get the feeling that being an artist was more enjoyable before? Is all this pressure to do more and be on multiple social media platforms accumulating, taking away the joy of making art? Join me and Richie as we delve into these questions and explore how I am combating these feelings by immersing myself in my studio and 'painting it out.' If you've been feeling weary lately, we hope this episode gives you a little comfort and encouragement to keep showing up and making art. It's more important than ever! P.S. Instagram: the O.G. photo-sharing social media platform. It was once so beloved by artists, photographers, and day-to-day photo sharers. But now, is it still considered the best social media platform for artists? We are going to dive deep into whether or not that is still the case, or if artists (and other creatives) should be turning towards other platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, or maybe even the app that’s once again in the spotlight—Vero. Figuring out which place to share your creations and content with the world can be challenging. So in today’s episode, we are going to compare a handful of the options that are available. A few things to consider while listening as well as when you are making platform decisions: Determining which platform to invest time in, depends on a number of factors. What is your purpose for being on the app? Where is your community or audience? Which apps do you enjoy being on and are willing to invest time in? Which app plays to your strengths? I’ve been quiet on social media lately but I have been working on something really important - making art fun again! The studio has had a makeover, new art supplies have been ordered and ALL my sketchbooks are out!! Plus, Richie and I have been having some BIG ol' chats about the future direction of the podcast and art biz in general. With a new year coming, it’s time for a change. In this week’s episode, we look back on the last year and talk about the changes we are making to bring more creativity and fun into our lives as we head into 2022. This includes a change in the way that we approach the podcast. As it’s the last episode of the year, we also want to thank you for your support and wish you a happy festive season! This week, Richie and I answer your questions. You’ll hear personal stories including how we met, whether we always wanted children and what’s been the hardest part of our journey so far. We also share business tips on areas such as Facebook advertising and getting started with teaching. One thing you’ll notice is that things are always changing. Being a creative couple is a juggling act that requires plenty of communication and adjustment! There are times when we focus on creative work and feel like we are not being good parents and then there are times when we are very hands-on with our family but lack creative purpose. It’s not all doom and gloom though! We chat about how we have learned to deal with this ebb and flow and what we are loving in this current phase. We hope that the episode is informative and encouraging! Can you still grow on Instagram? Is it worth starting a YouTube Channel? When should you leave your day job? Is your art biz covid-proof? Just a few things that come up in today’s chat about making an income from your art. We have talked about this topic many times but these are our latest thoughts and tips taking into account how the world and social media platforms have changed. Plus we talk about the realities of making money from selling art and why teaching is such an important income source for many artists. It’s a juicy one and it’s not just for artists that are starting out. At the end of the podcast, we talk about longevity and how your approach will shift as you become more established. I wasn’t sure what to call this week’s episode as we chat about so many things. Yoga, social anxiety, the progress I have been making on my paintings, accounting, books, Netflix - it’s a mixed bag! Then it came to me. While I haven’t been painting as much lately, my life has felt rich with creativity. I’ve had time to discover new passions and I have finally learned how to take breaks and tackle tasks in short bursts. Could it be that I am living a well rounded creative life and finding balance in this busy world? It’s not perfect but it feels like I am on the right path. Or at least the right path for now! Richie and I muse on this in today’s episode and share plenty of laughs along the way. We hope the episode provides inspiration for your own multi-faceted creative life! This week, Richie and I are chatting about creative confusion. Sometimes you can think you have your art figured out and then lo and behold you are back at square one, uncertain about where you are heading and what direction you want to take. I have been experiencing this over the past week or two, so it was good to unpack it with Richie. We talk about why my art is changing, the negative impacts of social media on creativity and the advantages of lingering in the experimental phase. At the end of the episode, I share a few ideas that are less about resolving confusion and more about embracing it. I hope you enjoy the episode and it alleviates some of the pressure to have your art style boxed off and fully resolved! This is my favourite episode so far (I'm fairly new to this podcast, so have lots of catching up to do). I've listened to it twice today because it is full of useful thoughts and ideas around working in series, something I have felt I need to start doing for some time now, and I just couldn't take it all in in one sitting! Thank you for sharing your gentle but invaluable advice, and your wonderful conversations.

I've just listened to your podcast while painting! I was so looking forward to hearing you 2 again! I just couldn't believe your subject this week! I've been reading up for ages on what to buy in the way of a more professional camera for my artwork. I've always made do with my now rather old canon G11 or my Samsung S10. I'm also a keen photographer (usually on auto😁), but this advice was really good! I think I'll just hold on for a little while! I absolutely love your calm, gentle nature and the accents! thank you xx

I don't think you can schedule my creativity especially when other priorities come in place. In my case my uni work and my health which recently has had to be dealt with and have gone weeks without doing art but doing creative writing around my health ritue has been focused. But I'm trying not to concern myself with it cause I think it's all about balance. @tracey_morgan_illustrations

I budget by using an old cupboard that fell a part and I used it to make canvas.

Hey Laura, Just discovered your podcast and I am really enjoying it. Its great to listen to fellow Australian artists as I mostly follow and listen to overseas podcasters as there are so many out there. I really loved the tips in this episode as I really struggle with budget restraints. I particularly loved the one about working small first to gain clarity and direction on say paper before going to canvas or whatever else people use. I am really going to embrace that for several reasons firstly because I tend to work large and with lots of paint. Secondly, as an abstract artist I tend to lose my way too often and this will be a valuable method of focus for me. Keep up the great work. Thank you. Imma.
