When I saw this quote from Eckhart Tolle that I opened the podcast with, it really hit me. It hit me so hard that it inspired thoughts to spew out of me that I felt would be very pertinent to so many. It is so important to remember that we are not our emotions. I realized that a couple of weeks ago, I fell prey to personifying the way I was feeling. I began to identify with it. I felt like it was part of me. I had forgotten that feelings come and go. Just because I was sad, did not mean I was a sad person and it would last forever. I see this all of the time with my clients. Narrative therapy is what I will often use to try to objectify and separate those feelings from the identity. When a person says they are anxious or have anxiety, it has become part of their identity. It has become something that has been felt so consistently that it is now a part of the subconscious and is a way of life. Narrative therapy suggests to separate these entities by objectifying them. For example, labeling feelings of anxiety and painting them into a character such as "the old lady" or whatever. That way, you can ask when they remember "the old lady" first showing up. Can you see how this can begin to separate emotions from idenity? Join me in this podcast and listen to some practical examples of how this occurs and 3 steps that will help to combat identifying so much with our emotions. We know how important it is to teach emotional regulation to our children. But parents, you better know how to emotionally regulate before you can teach it to your own children. Remember, so much more is caught than taught in our parenting world. Here is the link I promised to follow along with: https://cls.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/3019/2016/06/Chain-Analysis-Worksheet.pdf I have decided to do a series on emotional regulation in DBT. Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a great therapeutic modality because it presents so many skills that can actually be learned. To further sharpen your emotional regulation strategies, find a DBT trained therapist in your area or contact me for more info. https://linktr.ee/coachemilysanchez/
In this video, I address 2 common pieces of advice that I think do not really apply to modern relationships anymore. Are you truly working on yourself? In this podcast I talk about how difficult communication is between anyone who seems to be the cause of pain for you. What would happen if you were asked to give a speech and while you were walking up about to deliver it, you totally stubbed your toe? Would you be able to talk right away? Would you have the senses to say everything as planned? Not at all...you'd definitely need some time to compose yourself. Same goes for our emotional pain. We just may not have the words in the moment when we are "triggered" into feeling a lot of pain. So, I offer some helpful strategies around this, so you can communicate better with your coparent, spouse, child, coworker...or WHOMEVER! In this episode, I explain where I've been for the last couple of years. I have been chasing after a dream. I share 3 key things I have learned about chasing dreams. I explain my podcast's new name Turn the Corner.
To all my single moms out there, this message is for you. Single dads, just substitute dad for mom and listen on father's day. :) :) * Why does Mother's Day shortly after a divorce feel weird or different? I hope it doesn't for you, but just in case, I shared my perspective which I believe many share. * It is interesting that once divorced, you fall into the category of Single Mom. Isn't that nice that society has a new name for you? Subconsciously, this can feel like a different definition and even a different identity. * I believe this identity can enhance what motherhood means to you and is a special calling. As we rise to any challenge we may have, the Lord qualifies whom he calls. * Please listen in and let me know what your perspective of a single mom is. Link to Podcast in Bio. Episode #102.
I've got a little secret to share in this podcast that you might not be ready to hear. So, when you're ready...go listen! You won't regret it. * This podcast actually stems from a time in my life when I was struggling and I kept asking my mom for advice. "Tell me your secrets!" I'd say. "I want to know." She would keep telling me I wasn't in the right frame of mind to hear it yet and kept putting me off and putting me off. Well, what does that do to anyone? It sparks their curiosity and makes them want to know....NOW!!! * So when I made her tell me it started off with the phrase, "You're not going to want to hear this." Ha ha. That's not the most fun thing to hear before someone proceeds to offer advice. But, it was very simple y'all and you probably need to hear it, too. * On the back end of the podcast, I talk a little bit about what real self-care is and what it isn't. Interesting that the tough message from my mom is actually what proves to care for the self THE VERY BEST! * Link in BIO. EPISODE 101. LOVE YOU GUYS!
This is truly the come back kid story. If you feel a lack of motivation or continuation or cultivation or any -ation, come listen to this interview I have with my friend, Jordan Keith (@jordandkeith). * We are talking fitness, health, physical journey today folks, and boy this guy has had one...and a few. Growing up as a kid who was always overweight, it was super hard to feel confident enough to jump into the physical fitness world that the small town had to offer. Nobody really teaches you how to break out of unhealthy habits at that age, but Jordan exercised a lot of fortitude going into college to take his first steps in a healthier direction. * Next comes love, then comes marriage, then comes babies in a baby carriage (ok, that sounds familiar) and sometimes those things throw wrenches in the physical fitness area. We can ALL relate! * Then Jordan pushed through and broke through some barriers he never could before to get to where he is now. 11% body fat and training to GAIN weight/muscle. He can't believe he's stepping on the scale and hoping it'll go up. A place he's never been before. * Come listen in to find out his secrets on my 100th podcast episode!
In this podcast, I interview Noelle McBride, @c.noellemcbride author of "Beauty for Ashes: Divorce and the Latter-Day Saint Woman." I believe this is the first book of its kind! FINALLY, there is a great resource for members of the Church going through divorce. * We talk about everything here: healing, boundaries, forgiveness, falling out of love, dating after divorce, faith amidst trial, building ourselves back. The struggle is real, but it CAN lead to a new reinvented self through the atonement of Jesus Christ. And that's why I love her story so much!!! People, there is hope and healing on the way. * Come listen and then read the book whether you are divorced or not, this can give you the tools to overcome any challenge by using gospel principles. * Grab her book "BEAUTY FOR ASHES: DIVORCE AND THE LATTER-DAY SAINT WOMAN" on Amazon. About the author: www.amazon.com/author/cnoellemcbride * Check out the Podcast: Link in BIO episode 99.
Ever feel like you're stuck in a rut? You just have lost your passion and vision. You may still feel happy, but things are just meh. That emoji is getting used more and more by you. Haha * I found myself here and then did something to break out of it that has been life changing. Yeah, yeah, sounds cliche and life coachy. I get it. But, hey, it worked for me big time and it will work for you, too. * Hop on the podcast train and checkity check yourself before you wreck yourself and check it out. * Podcast link in bio episode 98.
In this podcast I interview my oldest daughter Izzy. I thought it could be beneficial to go to the source and ask how her experience has been with going between two households. * I can imagine that having four parents might feel a little much at times, but Izzy handles it great. She's a wonderful oldest sister to all her siblings and is a great example. * I love how she explains having two houses as such a great way of living. She is truly blessed but also has natural frustrations that come with the territory. * I know how parents worry about their children especially when faced with divorce. You are a good parent because of it! Please do not assume it'll automatically be hard for them or something they cannot overcome. Instead, take those energies and harness them into creating a beautiful picture of what their life is.
You guys ready to hear more about setting goals? Ok, ok, we all know how to set them. Start broad, narrow them down, make them actionable and doable. * But...HOW DO WE MAKE THEM LAST? There's some statistic going around that says in 2 weeks from the beginning of the year 90% of us stop following our goals. Ok, so that number grows every time I hear the statistic. Whatever it is, that is lame! We are better than this. * I have devised a plan to help you stick with your goals. It's a fun plan an exciting plan and a meaningful plan. Come, listen in because it's one of my better podcasts let's be honest. :) :) * Bio to PODCAST is in link. Head to episode #96
In this video, I interview President Tim Overton of the Phoenix, AZ West Maricopa Stake. President Overton has been stake president for 5 years and a previous bishop. He joined the church 20 years ago while playing football at Idaho State University. Tim works as an attorney and law professor and specializes in inclusion, diversity and race relations. * I wanted to take a peek inside the training of bishops and shine light on what their role is while one is going through a divorce. Or, what their role is in general in conflict resolution. I was surprised to hear of the amount of resources available. This left me filled with hope for any individual who is seeking guidance and counsel from a bishop. * The Church has taken great strides in aiding its members with mental health. We need to remember that bishops are human and are not trained therapists. However, they can offer so much guidance and have direct access to find more support if you so need. * Check out the PODCAST by going to my link in BIO. Episode 95. * Remember the views and ideas expressed are not representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are merely two individuals who happen to be members of the church who are sharing experiences.
Nobody likes to bring up tough subjects. If you are anything like me, you'd rather throw dirt in your eyes. But there really is a much much easier way to go about engaging in one. * What about offering apologies? Is it awkward or actually empowering. How about receiving apologies? * Whether we're trying to communicate in marriage, coparenting, or whatever the case may be, I've come across some little communication hacks that can help anyone get through the toughest convos with ease. * Link to Podcast in BIO episode 94.
In this podcast I share what I feel are the top TEN things people forget to include in their divorce decrees. When writing a parenting plan, it's hard to look into the future and have things laid out especially when your kids are young. * You're probably not thinking about cell phones, extra curricular activities let alone college. How does this all play out as the years go by? * Tune in and find out what you might be missing. Link in Bio Episode 93.
What do you do if one parent will not give permission for your child to be baptized? This can feel very devastating as members of The Church view baptism as necessary for salvation. * If you foresee this happening in the future there are a few things you can include in your divorce decree. * Come listen in to hear my take on a few things you can do to dispel the fears that surround this. I have truly found some gems from past conference talks that have completely changed my perspective and I truly hope your worry will be alleviated as well. * Link in Bio. Episode 92
Having the Gift of the Holy Ghost is probably life's most precious gift. We sometimes forget we even have it, though. We have GOOGLE where we can get all our answers, so we forget we have the greatest direction ever! * Our world is obsessed with self help books, diets, blogs, smoothies, gurus, podcasts (um ya, that's me). Everywhere you turn someone has the answer or strategy you need to feel better, be better, look better, dream better. Shoot! Our precious gift gets overshadowed easily, especially when we get out of practice of using it. * Snuggle up and come listen as I share a story of a bear, a dog, and how we can follow the Spirit in our lives. Animals in stories are awesome especially when it's death defying and about my awesome ancestor! *
This podcast is for all my self-helpers out there. The green smoothie drinking, morning routiners, goal setting, self-improving friends. Sometimes we all get into funks where our usual strategies don't seem to be working. At those types of moments, I ask (in my best Chandler from Friends voice) "Could it BE more simple?" * With so much content and self help in the world, we can miss the mark. We make things more complicated, more heavy, more important, more... * Let's wipe that all away and get to the simplicity of what works. * I'm really excited about this podcast. I hope you love it!

Last week we had mediation via telephone in Mesa. Unfortunately we didn't come to an agreement on all things. 😐
