1. Pull and Summarize Current Quarter Estimates
Identify and gather consensus analyst estimates for key company-specific metrics for the upcoming quarter.
Note any recent estimate revisions, upgrades/downgrades, or outlier analyst calls.
Record the company’s own guidance (if given)—is it above, below, or in line with consensus?
2. Review Latest Company Guidance
Is guidance for the current/future quarters recently upgraded, maintained, or walked down?
Compare company-issued guidance versus Wall Street consensus.
Is management typically conservative, realistic, or promotional in guidance vs. historical actuals?
If there’s been a pre-announcement, summarize content and new numbers.
3. How Did the Company Perform Last Quarter?
Summarize key performance from the most recent quarter:
Actual results vs. consensus and company guidance.
Major revenue/margin drivers.
One-time items, surprises, or new disclosures.
Capture year-over-year (YoY) and quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) trends for the core metrics.
Note market and peer group reaction post-quarter.
4. Key Events & News Since Last Report
Track significant headlines, regulatory news, major product launches, deals, litigation, macro/industry shifts, or quarterly KPIs reported in between earnings.
Include insider transactions, buy/sell-side rating changes, and unusual trading patterns.
Monitor relevant peer/competitor earnings for color or warning signs.
5. Concerns and Themes from the Last Earnings Transcript
Read the management Q&A and prepared remarks—list out recurring risk factors, controversies, apology tours, or “soft spots” mentioned.
Capture analyst concerns that received hedged or evasive responses.
Identify any “guidance caveats” or body language/frequency signals (e.g., management harping on macro, changing tone vs. prior calls).
