For the first time, a full podcast in the summer, because there is a lot to talk about. And, by and large, we have more questions than answers in the wake of the craziness that is taking place, as the landscape of college sports changes seemingly by the day. But we try to make as much sense of it as we can.
In the wake of Gavin McKenna's monumental decision to leave Major Junior for Penn State, it puts an exclamation point on a number of issues out there. It's not just about McKenna, but it's a useful example to offshoot into many areas, and offshoot we do. For one, some team rosters are still in flux, as decisions get made about other major junior players moving ot the NCAA. The Athletic Award Agreement letters the players are signing are no longer as binding as the old NIL, and so that's another aspect. What does the influx of Major Junior players mean for college hockey? How much will the money being awarded some players affect the locker room? How are programs around the country handling the ability to hand out some cash, at least for those that can? There are still so many questions, however, about what the nature is of all this money, with NCAA rules regarding revenue share and NIL payments, still in flux in many ways.
Meanwhile, college hockey has now clearly become more prominent in the overall hockey food chain, in terms of the development path to the NHL. It's become clear, NHL teams are fully on board with this, by and large. This, of course, has caused a lot of angst in Major Junior circles. On the ice, what does McKenna's arrival mean? Is Penn State suddenly the obvious NCAA championship favorite? Are we naive in thinking we've seen great players in college hockey before, and that it won't be nearly as simple as that?

Dane Jackson takes over as new North Dakota head coach, as the baton passes from one alum to another. Jackson played from 1988-92, and then went on to a pro career, before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach. He takes over during a relative lull in the program's prowess, and as it navigates the changes in college hockey. The Fighting Hawks have been front and center, with a prominent player leaving, and some big names coming from Major Junior.

Normally our summer specials are about introducing new head coaches. But instead this time, we'll start with Denver's David Carle, who is always a good conversation because of his passion and knowledge about many topics -- particularly in areas where he wants to see growth in the sport. That includes the NCAA Regional format debate (Part 47), but also transfer portal, revenue sharing with players, and the prospectus for his team's 2025-26 season. The Pioneers should be in good shape again to chase an 11th national championship.
