Description

Mark and Jake are the Gaming Moguls. We discuss aspirational board gaming topics for those board gamers that want to get deeper into the hobby. We discuss a variety of topics and offer our opinions and analysis of interest to enthusiast gamers.

Mark, Sobhi and special guest Nick from Talking Cardboard engage in a lot of wishful thinking about what we want to play at Gaming Moguls Summer Muster 2024. As you could predict, Mark wants to play a lot of Euros, Nick wants to play a lot of Wargames, and Sobhi doesn't dare as long as there are trains.
Mark and Sobhi have a big announcement - MogulsCon 2.0 August 16-18 in Hopkins, MN! We also review games we've played and talk about three different space operas - two of which involve a dying sun or planet. We also talk about a couple of our favorite recent 18xx plays and rare Japanese trick-takers.
Episode 64: Passing Muster

Episode 64: Passing Muster

2023-10-1701:28:58

Sobhi and Mark head off for the First Minnesota Muster - a weekend of heavy games, war games and train games and live to tell the tale.. but not all the games could say as much. We also discuss a new favorite of the group - Praga Caput Regni. Finally - we introduce a new recurring segment called "What Makes This Game Great" - in which we write a love letter to Brass.
The Gaming Moguls add a new co-host to the mix - Sobhi Youssef! We introduce Sobhi, talk about what we've been playing - then talk about games where the theme is clearly reflected in the mechanisms.
Time again for that annual look back at Mark's best-of-the-best. It's probably the most pure list ever - since very few "new hotness" games were played in 2022. Where does Age of Steam land this year? Did Ark Nova crack the list? Is it once again all Uwe Rosenberg?
Our favorite time of year is when we review our top 20 games of the year to see how our tastes evolve over the year. We count 'em down from 20 to 1 and talk about the ones that almost made the list. To nobody's surprise - Jake likes the trains and Tom Lehmann - and there are plenty of those on the list. What's #1 - and are you Team Jake?
Jake and Mark review a cabin gaming weekend and ponder why some cooperative games - especially some very highly rated cooperative games - leave such an emptiness after playing. They revisit Ark Nova with some additional thoughts after more plays, and talk about games that scare us.
We're Back! After a lovely extended summer break - the Gaming Moguls rip into Season Two. We spend the episode catching up on the best games that we've played since the last episode and our favorites of the year so far. We also compare and contrast a group of four heavy hour-long games (Shinkansen Zero Kei, Bear Raid, Furnace and Nusfjord)
It's Moguls Unfiltered tonight - where we discuss our unplayed games in the BGG Top 100 and what we think about them.. good, bad, or otherwise. This episode is full of rapid-fire hot takes and bad opinions.. or are they?
Jake takes his shot at listing his top 20 games of all time as of Fall 2021. We count them down from 20-1 and talk about some of the things that didn't make the list. Who is more correct on their list - Jake or Mark?
It's the holiday season again - that means it's time to recap what our favorites are for the year and discuss them. Mark had a back to basics year - and the average age of the games is older than it has ever been. What will be #1?
Episode 55: The Hot Oldness

Episode 55: The Hot Oldness

2021-09-2701:02:04

Jake and Mark continue their homage to the great games of years gone by and why they are better games than the new ones being released in 2021. We talk about several games with an average release date of 2009 - and give you our thoughts and experiences playing them.
Jake and Mark double down on the Old Hotness this week to discuss an amazing set of midweight games from over a decade ago. We ponder why all of these games have stood the test of time and examine what they all have in common. We also ponder why games that play well with 5 players aren't more common.
Jake and Mark have an episode chock full of game plays - and a shocking number of them involve a lot of cubes. Whether for workers, resources, trains, or routes - it's all so many cubes. We talk about Hallertau, Brass Lancashire, Gulf Mobile & Ohio, Indonesia, Erie Railroad, Mombasa, Reykholt, Viticulture, and lots more.
Jake's back and he's got games to talk about. We run through the games we've played including Decrypto, Cribbage, Trade on the Tigris, Santa Monica, Burano, Great Western Trail and Sleeping Gods. After that we run a lot of short topics up the flagpole - including those bedeviling games that we love but can't win to save our lives. We also ponder as to if 18xx has jumped the shark?
It's guest host time at the Gaming Moguls - we've got Craig Taylor from The Train Rush joining us once again. This time, he's doing something he vowed never to do - make a Top 20 list. We even get him to (mostly) not talk about trains for a while.
We made it to Episode 50.. and we've decided to do a new "About Us" episode. We originally did this back in Episode Zero - but that's now two years out of date and our audio quality is much better. We review our tastes in games and gaming, our goals for the Gaming Moguls, and restate our favorite games.
Jake and Mark get back to business! We talk about all the great games we've played since the last episode! We also have a pre-holiday fireside chat where we discuss everything from collection curation to holiday break game choices! We promise - no exclamations were harmed in the recording of this episode!
In Episode 48, Jake runs down his top 20 games as of Fall, 2020. Big changes this year as we missed out on a year of gaming IRL and we included 18xx games. After listening, are you on #teamjake or #teammark?
It’s that time again – time to revisit the games that spark joy in the Gaming Moguls! This time we examine Mark’s Top 20 of 2020 to see what’s new on the list and what games have lost their shine. I heard of The Gaming Moguls podcast when the Board Game Barrage podcast talked of the game weight measuring system used(and created?) by TGMp. I haven't finished my first episode, yet, I can already tell I'm choking to really enjoy their production.
