Is nasal breathing better for running? David 'Jacko' Jackson, former professional rugby player forced to retire in 2013 due to traumatic brain injury, recently ran up & down Mount Snowdon 6 times in 24 hours. He also ran a 216km Ultra Marathon, breathing just through his nose. In this episode of Runchatlive Podcast, he discusses how efficient functional breathing using the nose instead of the mouth can be key in not just recovery from brain injury but also improving athletic performance.
With 316 appearances for Nottingham RFC, and 102 tries across a career of 13 years, David 'Jacko' Jackson was forced to retire in 2013 due to ‘TBI’ - Traumatic Brain Injury. Re–training as a Strength & Conditioning Coach, David co-founded the School of Calisthenics, became a Master Instructor with the Oxygen Advantage, and founded ProBreathwork.com. In this episode, originally recorded for the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, Jacko talks to us about his incredible journey.

If you want to join the live recordings, head to The Runchatlive Facebook Page or Sports Therapy Association YouTube Channel every Tuesday at 8pm (GMT+1).
Our special guest Dr Gary Mendoza, a behaviour change expert and lecturer in Nutrition for Sport & Exercise at Bath Spa and Cardiff Metropolitan Universities, opens the month with an episode entitled 'Nutrition: Mind Over Matter?'
Dr Mendoza was a guest back in August 2021 in Ep64 of the Sports Therapy Asspciation Podcast: 'Motivational Interviewing for Client Communication', and in this episode discusses how important an understanding of Behaviour Change is when working with patients or clients trying to manage their weight.
Topics discussed include:
The research work Dr Mendoza did into the psychology of change, as part of his PhD in Nutrition
The importance of a client’s state of ‘readiness’ when looking at weight management
The fact that people will employ the services of a personal trainer or sports therapist even if they are not psychologically ready to change.
The use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) when working with behaviour change goals, drawing on the knowledege of MI Founders William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, as well as Professor Terry Moyles.
The value as a therapist or personal trainer of improving ones communication skills, including the ability to understand & use open questions effectively, affirmations, reflections and summaries (known collectively in MI terms as ‘OARS’).
The use of “real play” vs “role play”, i.e. learners using their own personal or business issues when studying behaviour change, rather than a made up scenario.

And so we reach the final part of our 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, being uploaded also to this Runchatlive Podcast. My special guest is Dr Amy M Bender, Director of Clinical Sleep Science at Cerebra, talking about 'In-Home Polysomnography' and sharing the results of my recent five week sleep study using the Cerebra Sleep System.
What is In-Home Polysomnography?
The most comprehensive form of sleep study currently available requires going to a sleep-lab. However, for many the sleeping environment is unnatural and equipment uncomfortable. A popular alternative is the ‘Home Sleep Apnea Test’ (HSAT), which though convenient only measures breathing and respiratory functions, not sleep quality.
Enter the ‘Cerebra Sleep System‘ – an in-home, self applied polysomnogram (PSG) that provides the quality diagnostics of an in-lab study with the convenience of Home Sleep Apnea Testing.
For those of you who like the nitty gritty, Cerebra Sleep System uses the patented algorithm Odds Ratio Product (ORP) that micro analyses the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal providing a continuous measure of sleep depth, moving beyond conventional scoring methods to dig deeper into brain activity.
The Cerebra Sleep System can measure brain waves (EEG), eye movement (EOG), respiratory data, leg and body movements, pulse oximetry, and heart rate (ECG).
My Five Week Sleep Study using ‘Cerebra Sleep System’
My personal five week sleep study included:
Electroencephalography (EEG/brain waves).
Electrooculography (EOG/eye movements).
Electromyography (EMG/electrical activity of chin muscle).
Daily reaction time tests to track performance.
Questionnaires on perceived sleep quality, disturbances during the night.
Tracking of daily exercise & use of electronics before bedtime.
In this podcast episode, topics discussed included:
What are the benefits but also limitations of common consumer wearables like Fitbit and Oura ring?
How does the Cerebra In-Home Polysomnogram Sleep System differ from the above?
How useful is the data regarding the different stages of sleep, e.g. REM, N-REM, Deep Sleep, etc.?
How did Matt Phillips find sleeping with the Cerebra headset on?
How useful was it being held accountable each day by filling in questionnaires?
What was Matt's Sleep Study expecting to find by removing caffeine consumption after week one?
A look at the results from Matt's five week Sleep Study including:
- General Insights (sleep efficiency, sleep latency, reported sleep quality, and more)
- Actual sleep time per night
- Amount of waking up after going to sleep
- Effect of removing caffeine: evening sleepiness, reaction time, attention lapses

Our new episodes continue, in association with the 'Sleep Awareness Month' of the Sports Thera[y Association, streamed live at 8pm (GMT +1) every Tuesday in April, to both the STA YouTube Channel and also the Runchatlive Facebook Page,
In this episode, I am joined by special guest Dr Jonathan Charest, Director of Athlete Sleep Services at The Centre for Sleep & Human Performance, in Calgary, Canada. Dr Charest, a published scientific author in the field of sleep research, discusses the impact sleep quality/quantity can have on athletic performance, cognition, health, and mental well-being. He also talks about the role of sleep in reducing risk of injury, and how by delivering education, screening tools, and research-based strategies we can help establish healthy sleep for athletes throughout their career.
Topics discussed include:
Has there been an increase in our understanding of the relationship between sleep and athletic performance over the last few years?
Do athletes sleep worse than non athletic population?
Does going to bed earlier the night before early morning training help?
How relevant are Circadian Rhythms and Chronotypes when it comes to working with athletes?
Are potential future elite athletes slipping through the net because of insufficient sleep?
Do elite athletes for different sports tend to be of the same chronotype?
What are some ways we can help athletes who are suffering from inadequate sleep?
How useful are sleep trackers and wearables to athletes?
How much of a factor is the type of sport when it comes to sleep inadequacy?
Can athletes 'bank' sleep hourse and if so how long do saved hours last?
What strategies can we give to athletes to help them improve their sleep?

After 18 months we're BACK! The response for last week's 'Sleep: The Silent Epidemic' episode has been fantastic - so very glad it has proved popular amongst the Runchatlive Community. We will continue to stream all episodes of the 'Sleep Awareness Month' LIVE to not just the STA YouTube Channel but also the Runchatlive Facebook Page so if you'd like to watch them live be sure to head to one of these sites at 8pm (GMT +1) every Tuesday in April.
In Part 2 of this month's 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we talk about 'Sleep Trackables' with special guest Dr Olivia Walch, CEO of Arcascope, a company that develops science-backed apps to help people fix their sleep and circadian rhythms.
With an estimated one in three people in the UK reporting regular sleep complaints, it is not surprising that sleep trackers have become enormously popular over the last few years. On waking up, our faithful Fitbit, Oura Ring or Withings Sleep Analyzer (to name just three) will inform you of the quantity & quality of your night's sleep, but just how accurate are they? Can the information these consumer sleep wearables provide be put to good use, or are they just another modern day gadget causing dependency and anxiety?
Special guest Dr Olivia Walch takes us through such questions to see how marketing claims hold up under the scrutiny of science, and discusses what role they can play in improving sleep health.
Topics discussed include:
What is the difference between sleep trackers and sleep wearables?
How long have sleep trackers/wearables been used to assess sleep quanitity/quality?
How has the technology in sleep wearables changed over time?
How do scoring algorithms work?
How accurate are popular sleep wearables from Garmin, Fitbit, Oura Ring, etc?
Can popular consumer sleep wearables measure stages of sleep?
What is the relationship like between sleep researchers and consumer brands for wearables?
If we see clients/patients are wearing sleep trackers, what sort of conversations should we be having with them?
Can sleep trackers cause 'orthosomnia' - the obsession for 'perfect' sleep?
Using sleep wearables to measure sleep consistency.
Controlling light exposure: one of the easiest & most accessible ways to improve sleep quality/quanity

Visit a massage therapist and chances are you will be told you have muscle knots and maybe even 'Trigger Points'. Much of the therapist's work will strive to 'undo' these knots, maybe using 'Trigger Point Therapy'. But how much evidence is there that these knots are responsible for pain. What effect does 'releasing' them have? As runners, can we benefit from such 'release'?
Ep.52 of Run Chat Live Podcast brings you the undisputed forefather of putting evidence back into therapeutical care - Mr Paul Ingraham. If you are as yet aware of Paul Ingraham’s work via painscience.com, formerly known as saveyourself.ca, then buckle yourself in for an episode that is going to change your life. Though taste is obviously a personal thing, as far as writing style, humour & educational skills go, Paul Ingraham is still after many, many years one of Run Chat Live's TOP RECOMMENDATIONS for clinicians (and patients) looking to open the door to becoming more evidence based.
Check out Paul’s book about trigger points and muscle pain. That's behind a paywall, but there's also a long free article about trigger point science and controversies, and an introduction to basic trigger point therapy.

In Episode 50, we are delighted to bring you Dr. Guillaume Millet, who from 2013 to 2018 worked at the Human Performance Laboratory directing the Neuromuscular Fatigue research team. Now back in France, Dr. Millet is Professor of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Kinesiology at Jean Monnet University, Saint-Étienne and the director of the LIBM laboratory (Inter-University Laboratory of Human Movement Biology).
His general research area investigates the physiological, neurophysiological and biomechanical factors associated with fatigue, including that associated with extreme (ultra-endurance, hypoxia) exercise, and in this episode of Runchatlive talks about training & fatigue in Ultra Trail Running.
We should add, Dr. Millet is himself no stranger to extreme exercise, with over 30 years experience competing in endurance sports including ultra-trail running, XC skiing and adventure races. The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® (UTMB) is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world with a distance of approximately 106 miles and a total elevation gain of around 32,940 ft. - Dr. Millet has placed 3 times in the top 6.

Regarded by many as the important contributor to running related research over the past 40 years, Dr. Benno Nigg is Founder & director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary, a multi-disciplinary Research Center concentrating on the study of the human body and its locomotion. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Olympic Order, honorary degrees from the Universities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and an honorary professorship from the University of Shanghai.
In this episode of Runchatlive, he will be discussing the SCIENCE behind modern running shoes. What role have shoes truly played in the performance explosion we have witnessed since Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to break two hours for the marathon. 2019 also brought us twice as many men running under 2:10 and twice as many women under 2:27 compared to 2016. Eight of the twelve fastest men’s marathons in history have been run in the last year. How much of a factor has this new breed of shoe played? And more importantly, what is it in the shoe that could have made this possible?
With over 25,000 publications on human locomotion, in particular with relation to products such as orthoses, shoe insoles, sport shoes, surfaces and sport equipment, Dr. Nigg will be giving us an inside look at his latest study that appeared this August in the British Journal of Sports Medicine: 'The teeter-totter effect: A new mechanism to understand shoe-related improvements in long-distance running.'
An incredible hour, thank you once again Dr. Benno Nigg for giving us his time.

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a very common injury in runners. It is the second leading cause of knee pain and the most common cause of lateral knee pain. To facilitate evidence-based management of ITBS, one needs to learn about the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this injury. This is often not as simple as it sounds because studies often contradict each other. Fortunately, in this episode of Runchatlive (for the first time in Spanish!) we have the pleasure of speaking with physical therapist Manuela Besomi, who has been working on ITBS as part of her PhD in Australia.

Runchatlive Ep.47 brings you a 'Plantar Fasciitis Special' with guest Hamish Vickerman, creator of 'The Fasciitis Fighter.' As per last month , this episode was dual-streamed LIVE to Facebook Group 'The Running Community' www.facebook.com/TheRunningCommunity as well as our facebook page at www.facebook.com/MattPhillipsRCL .
Hamish Vickerman created The Fasciitis Fighter in reaction to research published by Michael Rathleff in 2014: 'High-load strength training improves outcome in patients with plantar fasciitis'. In this episode, we discuss how the Rathleff paper revolutionised the way Plantar Fasciitis (PF) should be treated, and in doing so we cast a critical eye on many of the traditional ways that runners & non runners deal with PF, often following advice handed out by therapists & GPs who are clearly not up to date with the evidence.
It's an eye opening episode which we hope you enjoy and take on board, whether you are a therapist or a runner. As always feel free to leave comments and questions in the comment section.

What a way to get quality information out to runners! Thank you So much TRC! 🙌
In 2019, Emma & Grainne published along with co-author Tom Goom the first comprehensive guide on the hugely important topic of postnatal running, in an attempt to help fill what was up to that point a clear lack of information available for both clinicians and runners.
In this episode, Emma & Grainne discuss subjects including:
• Risk factors and contraindications to returning to running
• Signs & symptoms of pelvic floor and/or abdominal wall dysfunction
• Assessment of strength, impact management and readiness to run
• Key considerations such as breastfeeding, sleep and psychosocial factors
