What happens when a superfan gets called up to sing for their favorite heavy metal band? A kinda...kinda weird movie happens. Mark Wahlberg is the titular "Rock Star" in this 2001 film that was largely overshadowed by a national tragedy. We're digging into Marky Mark, as well as a number of real-life voices behind the singing in this movie, which is sort of based on a true story. And yeah, we have another one of those near-misses when trying to suss out the inspiration for one of the tunes. Can you help us?! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
This episode is more fun than an emotionally charged summer road trip with a famous band in the 1970s! We're doing Cameron Crowe again this week, this time with the 2000 film "Almost Famous" and the band at the heart of it - Stillwater! We'll cover all the nods to other 70s rockers โ intended or not โ plus get some behind-the-scenes info on how these songs came together with the help of Peter Frampton, and Nancy Wilson from Heart. Also, as with our last Crowe flick, there is a grunge element. Plus, caller Aviv Rubenstien hits us with an absolute deluge of Almost Famous facts and goodies! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
We'll be back with a new episode next week! In the meantime, please enjoy the time Goofy stopped by for an enlightening studio visit. He was only tryin' to take his boy fishinโ, okay? Boy oh boy do we have a special episode for ya! From the Powerline hits that never go out of style to a surprising revelation about the Goof Troop theme song, weโre gettinโ Goofy with it this week, a-hyuck!ย In a KFLX first, we are joined by our first ever in-studio guest: none other than the star of this film - the Goofster himself! We dive into connections to The Newsies, the insane decision that almost changed Goofyโs voice forever, and more! This weekโs episode features the outstanding voice talent of Brock Baker! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Itโs still Halloween in our hearts! Enjoy this classic from last year and weโll be back soon with new episodes! This week we explore the depths of hair metal horror with the "Trick or Treat" from 1986. This classic from the Satanic Panic era has everything: A slasher villain with a set of pipes, Gene Simmons putting on his acting boots, and lots of weaponized electricity. We also help Shawn's friend Lard Humungus get to the bottom of his demon problem. And yep, this one has a quiz. ย ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Spooky season continues! Shawn and Dustin have brewed up the perfect mixtape for your Halloween party! We're running through a monster mash of fictional artists, starting with some greasy, shirtless sax appeal from "The Lost Boys" (1987). Then, we're attending Tracy Jordan's spooky, scary "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" from "30 Rock." After that, we'll see what happens when indie rockers Low Shoulder from "Jennifer's Body" (2009) make a deal with the devil. We'll then head to the Titty Twister to catch a set from the vampiric house band Tito & Tarantula from "From Dusk til Dawn" (1996). And of course, no Halloween is complete without a spellbinding performance from The Sanderson Sisters in "Hocus Pocus" (1993). So light your jack-o'-lanterns and press play! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Ya'll wanna resurrect a dead body? The last time we had Erik in the studio he suggested โHard Rock Zombiesโ for a future episode of KFLX. Welcome to the future, baby! This 1985 gem was originally conceived as a short film, but the creators just had too much to say so it became the full-length extravaganza of half-finished plots, stop-motion asides, and surprisingly palatable rock music that weโre discussing today. Thereโs dodgy dialogue all over this movie, and at least one beyond-questionable love ballad, but also some legitimate rockers from these zombies on a mission of revenge. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
It was a box-office flop that got a second-wind on cable TV because the music is just that good! 1984's "Eddie and the Cruisers" is one of those movies so revered for its fictional music that it's honestly a little crazy that we're just now getting to it. And this is a double-feature, because we're covering "Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives!" as well! Packed full of songs that could top the real world charts (including some that actually did!), we had a lot of fun breaking down the tunes from both movies, all provided by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Yes, we'll dive into some Springsteen comparisons. How could you not when every sax-filled rock song on these soundtracks is absolutely dripping with New Jersey-ness? But there's more to explore here than just The Boss. Let's get cruisin'! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Y'all like grunge? Then have we got THE show for you this week! Let's take a trip back to the dawn of the Seattle sound. Cameron Crowe's "Singles" is absolutely stacked with grunge goodness. Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, along with Matt Dillon, make up the fictional band Citizen Dick. Chris Cornell also makes a cameo - and it turns out some of Soundgarden's biggest songs were inspired by a prop on the set of this very movie. PLUS: Our pal Jacob Givens (from the Waterproof Records Podcast and the internet at-large) joins us for the whole episode! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Hey isnโt that Shooter McGavin? Weโre entering uncharted waters this week with our first Disney Channel Original. 2011โs โLemonade Mouthโ is the story of an impromptu band formed during high school detention and their path toโฆrather wild success. And along the way they totally pull a Stomp, twice! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Rise above, we're gonna rise above! 2025's "Freaky Tales" is a series of ficitonalized and darkly comedic stories set in Oakland in 1987, and it's full of music! Danger Zone is the hip hop duo of Entice and Barbie that goes toe to toe against Too $hort in a rap battle. While based on a real act, the version of Danger Zone in this movie is its own thing. We also get into some of the Bay Area punk rock scene with the film's portrayal of Operation Ivy and more. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
KFLX's brand-newest episode to date! There are long-awaited sequels...and then there's Spinal Tap II. In "The End Continues," we finally get to catch up with David, Nigel, and Derek some 40 years down the road. The guys went to see the new flick, along with their buddy Paul Goetz from The Follow-Up Showdown, and got together over the weekend to discuss it in the studio. Did the sequel live up to the (decades of) build-up? Let's find out! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
This episode goes to eleven! It only took us 55 episodes to reach the most famous fictional band of all time. With the long-awaited sequel hitting theaters this weekend, we thought it was high time that we talk about the mother of all parody films, โThis Is Spinal Tap.โ Weโve got stories from the set and our usual detective work on what might have inspired songs like โBig Bottoms,โ โStonehenge,โ and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight." But wait, thereโs more! Weโll be back next Monday, joined by our friend Paul Goetz, to gather our thoughts and toss out some hot takes on โSpinal Tap II: The End Continues!โ ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Did you think we'd skip the music movie of the summer? We're diving deep into K-Pop this week! We're covering HUNTR/X and The Saja Boys, the two groups at the center of "KPop Demon Hunters," as well as talking about many of the voices and artists that came together to make these songs. PLUS: We call our pal Matt Wicks to get some details and deeper perspective on the K-Pop industry and the trends that led to this being such a huge film worldwide. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Summer is coming to an end and weโre headed back to school! โSchool of Rockโ is a film that hardly needs an introduction โ itโs a wholesome story of a hard rock burnout played by Jack Black who impersonates his way into a substitute teaching gig and ends up teaching his students how to rock out, with some life lessons for both the students and teacher along the way. But you already know all of that! Weโll be discussing the inspiration for the film, the writers of the tunes, and talking about the Broadway musical and Nickelodeon show as well. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
We're back and it's a quadruple feature! You might know this one best as the 2018 film starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (who also directed), but "A Star is Born" has been born again and again since its first incarnation in 1937. Janet Gaynor originated the role of Esther Blodgett and, in 1954, Judy Garland made it the singing role we've come to know. We cover some of our favorites from Judy's version before moving on to the darker, edgier, sultrier 1976 film starring Barbra Streisand as the renamed Esther Hoffman. After some time with big ballads and outlaw country we get to the grand finale with Gaga's character, Ally and her big energetic pop tunes. PLUS: Ryan Lichten from Culture Dumps calls in to tell us which version is truly the best! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
One more classic episode from the vault before we return next Monday, August 18th with brand new KFLX episodes! Expect the unexpected in the Kingdom Of Madness! We're headed for uncharted waters and into parts unknown with our first ever music-only episode! The "Macho Man" Randy Savage spent some time spittin' rhymes in the early 2000s and we're here to break down every single track on 2003's "Be a Man," an album centered around a diss track aimed at Hulk Hogan. This album swings bigger than Savage's baseball career and we're following all the threads to see who may have influenced (or been influenced by) Macho Man's rap opus. From Nelly to Ashanti and Snoop Dogg to Nate Dogg, it's a battle royale to find out which of Macho's tracks kicks the most butt! Plus the fellas get a super fun call from Matt Camp of AEW, Busted Open and Bleacher Report! Oooooh Yeeeah! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
One of our personal faves as we continue the summer with classic episodes from the vault. We're back with new episodes starting August 18th! All of the Loaf with none of the Meat! We're taking on the 1984 dystopian fantasy "Streets of Fire," featuring a string of bangers from 80s songwriting powerhouses, a killer score that wasn't even written for this film, and so much more. Also featuring music from this film's unofficial sequel and a performance by Mr. Loaf himself. Plus Dustin figures out where we've heard that sound effect before. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
Ready for some Christmas in July? We're keeping the KFLX vibe alive this summer with some classic episodes from the vault. Stay tuned for new episodes starting August 18th. Are you Snow-Belles material? You know we had to do a holiday show! What better way to bring the season into full swing than with the ABC Family original movie "The Mistle-Tones"? Sit down by the fire with a cup of eggnog, get sarinaded by both Tia Mowry and Tori Spelling, while playing along with a Chirstmas song quiz Shawn springs on Dustin. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
We're keeping the KFLX vibe alive this summer with some classic episodes from the vault. Stay tuned for new episodes starting August 18th. You don't want no part of this! This week is all about the biopic to end all biopics, 2007's Walk Hard. Shawn and Dustin step into the world of Dewey Cox and explore the many songwriters who made this film not just another parody, but an absolute tour de force of hilarious musical genius. We also go over some lesser known John C. Reilly vocal appearances and, of course, talk about our favorite tunes from the film. Plus a quiz involving Bob Dylan and his many portrayers. ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
We're keeping the KFLX vibe alive this summer with some classic episodes from the vault. Stay tuned for new episodes starting August 18th. Get your togas out of storage, the Deltas are throwing a party! Our most vintage film yet! This one covers Otis Day and the Knights from "Animal House," the film purported to have started the "gross-out" genre. There's nothing gross, however, about these sweet, sweet tunes. We've talked about all kinds of real artists who have appeared as fictional ones in the past, but this is the first time we'll follow a fictional band into reality! ๐ https://fictionradiopod.com ๐บ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m4ZexCk3CIQCSRfrn016rzUMZbckidQ&si=4Y69FgIdE45rKYnDAll ๐ท https://www.instagram.com/kflxfictionradio/ ๐ง FictionRadioPod@gmail.com
