Description

The 2 Regular Guys podcast has evolved from Aaron Montgomery and Terry Combs hanging out in hotel bars and restaurants after trade shows, eating chicken wings, disagreeing over ranch or bleu cheese as the true and proper dipping sauce, and talking the garment decorating and personalization industry. A long list of industry friends joined into those conversations over the years, in cities across America and the world. These same friends plus new friends we meet along the way now come back to join us as guests to the program. The trade shows continue, the industry grows and matures, and the 2 Regular Guys continue those conversations, talking garment and product decorating (and on occasion beer and chicken wings) weekly. Welcome to our 8th Year. Come along for the ride!

What do we usually see in decoration and what would you want to see?Erich: I’ve seen so many amazing pieces of yours that take a creative bent, and I notice that many of them include applique and multimedia. Why do you like applique so much as a medium? Can we talk about your favorite fabric types, what do you use and why?Erich: As a digitizer, I can’t help but want to discuss interpretation; we’ve talked a little about making coordinating looks, not just replicating logos, but in the process of embroidery, there’s so much we can do to further change the character of a design, even once we’ve already chosen a medium like applique- let’s talk about the things we can do in that phase- How do you approach specialty stitches and what we can do in digitizing?

The Pricing Advantage

The Pricing Advantage

2024-08-3001:02:42

Join us this week as we sit down with Dale Furtwengler, author of "Pricing for Profit: How to Command Higher Prices for Your Products and Services." Dale brings his wealth of knowledge on pricing strategies that help businesses command higher prices without losing customers we want to keep. We'll discuss key takeaways from his book and explore the psychology behind pricing, how to convey value effectively, and why most businesses leave money on the table. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to maximize your profits with smarter pricing tactics! Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants, lectures, or selling. 2 Regular Guys was not created for our employers but rather for our industry. Never mind - It’s tearable. Pricing for Profit Aaron: Welcome to our show. I’m excited to talk to you as I would consider you a mentor of mine. I’ve probably told this story on here before, but Dale was the gentleman who said to me “You can’t outgive the Universe” and it shaped how I operate. But for our listeners who don’t know you as I do, can you give us a short biography? Tell us the highlights that lead you to start Cutting Edge. I’m a CPA with national firm experience, followed by CFO positions in a variety of industries, started a business providing fractional CFO services, did a lot of pricing work, and shortly after Pricing For Profit was published rebranded my company to focus on pricing, I’ve now expanded the pricing work to include helping companies gain, and sustain, a decades-long competitive advantage. Terry: What inspired you to write "Pricing for Profit," and what do you see as the biggest misconception businesses have about pricing? I wrote the book because I realized I was only helping a handful of companies with my consulting work. I could have helped more if I had written a book. The biggest misconception about pricing is that it’s the primary factor in the buying decision. J. Conrad Levinson in his original book, Guerrilla Marketing, said that of 10,000 buyers surveyed only 14% listed price as the determining factor in their buying decision. 86% listed other factors…with price being ninth on the list. Aaron: What are some common mistakes companies make when setting their prices, and how can they avoid these pitfalls? They tout their offering as being better than their competitors’ offerings, then price their offering at, or below, their competitors’ price. In doing so they confuse the buyer…and confused buyers always revert to price. Terry: How do you address the fear many business owners have about losing customers when raising prices? I ask them “Who are your most difficult customers? Are they the most demanding when it comes to price? What would your life be like if you were able to replace them with more of your other customers? Aaron: How can small businesses or startups, with limited brand recognition, implement your pricing strategies effectively? Pricing is a part of establishing a brand. When your price is congruent with the value your offering provides, you establish a brand that buyers trust.

We skip the canned bios here. Just tell us a little about yourself. Amanda: Hello everyone! Thank you so much Aaron and Terry for having me here. I am excited to share my knowledge and expertise with all of you today. My name is Amanda Hietter and I’m the CEO and owner of Across the Horizon Travel. I have two wonderful children who are 21 and 16 and love to travel right along with me. I fell in love with travel at the age of 5 as my parents always took us on one big trip a year as a family. It was so much fun! My specialties in the travel industry consist of international romance and group travel. In the group travel niche, I assist retreat leaders with planning international retreats so they can get closer to their clientele and have deeper connections while enjoying the perks of staying in luxurious accommodations in an environment that is relaxing. Terry: Who do you plan retreats for? Management groups? Their top customers? Entire companies? Amanda: I typically work with retreat leaders in the industries of wellness, business coaches, and inspirational speakers, but have been diving into working with CEO’s and owners of small businesses to assist them with increasing production within their sales force. How do we do that? By offering incentive trips to their sales force to entice the sales team to reach their sales goals. When an employee reaches their goal, they receive a complimentary trip to go on a retreat with the company and enjoy a getaway with their spouse while also growing their mindset on how they can continue to reach their goals the following year. *I will work with the retreat leader to curate an itinerary/curriculum for the retreat itself.* Aaron: What are some of the most popular destinations for international retreats currently, and why? Amanda: Most retreat leaders are looking to get away to the Caribbean. It tends to be more cost effective, flight time is much less lengthy and you get the wonderful views of the beach. Popular destinations include: Mexico, Aruba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and others as well. Terry: How much time is required for a retreat? When should we start the planning process? Amanda: I recommend starting planning 1 to 1.

For those About to Digitize

Erich Campbell joins Terry and Aaron for a review of the top questions he gets from embroiderers and creatives who want to delve into the world of digitizing their own designs. From the question of in-house digitizing versus outsourcing, the ups and downs of automation, and the question of how much you need to buy into software to get started as well as some quick corrections on mindset for those who decide to go on the digitizing journey, Erich's tips will help you hit the ground running with embroidery digitizing. Embroidery Digitizing Aaron: I know our listeners are aware of my extensive 15 minutes of embroidery experience, but in that time I didn’t have a chance to digitize. Before we discuss anything else, will you define digitizing for us? I’m sure our listeners know what it is, but I have a sneaking suspicion you have a point to make with your definition. Terry: Digitizing is something that a lot of people outsource. Do people really need to digitize for themselves? Are there good reasons to bring it in-house? Aaron: Everyone knows I’m no stranger to employing AI in my workflow; is there automation to just make this thing happen? What’s the best tool that a digitizer can use? Terry: Ok, so let’s say someone really does have a need for really creative execution, special techniques, or just a super-fast turnaround; what’s the best way to get started as far as learning to digitize? Aaron: I see lots of people get really frustrated with their initial results in all forms of decorating, but it seems especially true of folks learning to digitize. What are the most common stumbling blocks that new digitizers keep tripping over? Terry: Whenever you’re diagnosing problems with any kind of decoration, you have to hone in on the part of the process that’s not going your way. How can new digitizers tell if it’s their work affecting the results or something going on with their equipment?  Aaron: We love to leave our listeners with What’s the one thing you think a mentor could have told you that would have made a difference for you as a new digitizer? Customer Service Aaron: This show came about as we were discussing what good customer service really is. This notion of ‘The Customer is Always” right. But we will get to that in a moment. The goal for today is to better define customer service so everyone can determine for them what it means and how to implement good customer service in their business. What is good customer service in your mind, Terry? My customer service story Listen to the customer (I could stop right there) and help them to find the product they need rather than 1) what you’re supposed to be selling, 2) what the customer believes they need, and 3) being willing to say, this is not the right product for what you’re trying to accomplish. I know you’re planning to drill down on this further but Communicate, Communicate, Communicate… not when it’s easy, but when it’s hard! Talking point (After Terry’s Definition of Good Customer Service}: BEFORE THE SALE Learning to say no. Sometimes the best customer service is to turn down the job. Why customer service is crucial in the apparel and product decoration industry. "The customer is always right." - Erich pointed out the original quote was 'The customer is always right, in matters of taste. ' Importance of clear communication from the start. Establishing policies and procedures that let the customers know what is in it for them. AFTER THE SALE Surprise Upgrades The importance of doing good work and delivering on time. Keeping customers informed throughout the order process. The role of transparency and honesty in building trust. We make all of the schools, teachers, and students we interact with aware of the companies that are supporting them both in the debriefing and on banners in the competition area. We also give all the kids a bag of goodies to leave with and am happy to include any of your promotional material in the goodie bags. I can also provide you with pictures of the event you can use in your marketing and am happy to help support you in other ways for supporting this program!

Would like to talk about Applique Getaway - Show is June 27 - 30, 2024.  Link to see what the show is about is here:  https://www.appliquegetaway.com/index.html  Link to register is here:  https://appliquegetaway.regfox.com/agtx24 Some great instructors this year including Lisa Shaw, Eve Lowry,  Stephanie Young from Siser,  Sheila Ryan and more.    Also two Afterhours events this year,  which is exciting.  Erich: You have a new book, Understanding Stabilizer. Give us the rundown on that. Book is Understanding Stabilizer.  Written based on blog posts I wrote when I was on the supplier side at EnMart.  Also based on education I got through my friendship with a senior vice president at QST who handled our account and educated me a great deal on stabilizer.  A great book for beginners,  but I also think it has tips and tricks that could help experienced embroiderers as well.  Terry: What is the biggest misunderstanding or ‘Myth’ about stabilizer that you continually run into? Erich: Why do you think there are so many differing viewpoints on how to use stabilizer? Terry: For those starting in embroidery, what stabilizers should they stock first? Erich: What one fact should embroiderers know about stabilizer that no one talks about? Terry: Where can we find Understanding Stabilizer? Book -  Link to buy is here:  https://www.kristineshreve.com/shop-products/  Also offering a coupon for Regulators who want to buy the book - will take 15% off price - Code is 2RG15.   Erich: What else have you been working on since we spoke last? Also working on a podcast and newsletter, possibly a webinar and a second book.  And open to other gigs and projects as they come along.   Terry: Before we let you go, where can our listeners find you? Decades of Iconic Tees Aaron: Introduce yourself for listeners who haven’t seen you on 2RGs before. Aaron: Let’s talk about why people have a favorite t-shirt. What makes it your favorite? JAY:  To me, this is all about emotional connections between individuals and communities through in this case a literal common thread. In the grand scheme of marketing, branded merch isn't just about selling a product; it's about building a community. So, next time you take a refreshingly cold sip from your sleek, stainless steel, engraved tumbler or stuff your towels into your logo-adorned oversized beach tote, don’t be too surprised to suddenly have the memories of how you felt, who you were with and what you were doing with the community. You’re officially a time traveling fan working your way back to the intersection of emotional engagement and effective branded merch. It's the kind of connection that makes you smile and say, "I'm not just wearing a shirt; I'm wearing a memory – and that's nacho average experience!" Terry: I’ve got a question. What is the first printed garment you can remember wearing? Aaron: Jay, let’s go back in time and talk about favorite t-shirts over the years. 1920: It was included in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 1920 1950’s: The white t-shirt gained iconic status in the 1950s thanks to its association with rebellious youth culture, as depicted by actors like Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause." 1960’s Vietnam War Protest Shirts: During the Vietnam War era, t-shirts were emblazoned with slogans such as "Make Love, Not War" and "War is Not the Answer." Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. One iconic example is the "I Am a Man" t-shirt worn by participants in the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968 such as "Make Love, Not War" 1970’s Keep on Truckin "I heart New York" (1970s-present) Rolling Stones Alternates - the original smiling face, KISS, Coca-Cola & Pepsi 1980’s Frankie Say Relax DARE Wham - Choose Life Alternates - Michael Jackson Thriller, video games, RUN DMC, WWE wrestling: Hulkamania,
