Welcome to the first episode of How to Become a Career Coach. I’m Scott Anthony Barlow and I started Happen To Your Career in 2012 because I wanted to help people make big career changes, advance their careers, learn how take control of their life and work, but most of all to help people find and do work that makes them more happy more often and uses what we call their signature strengths Since that time, we’ve been able to help many thousands of people make changes that not only impacted their careers and their income, but helped to radically change their lives. I haven’t done this by myself. Along the way, I’ve trained others how to be career coaches as well. We’ve done this by creating a Professional Career coaching Training and certification program to help give people additional training and support as they got started as career coaches. We created this podcast to showcase how you can get started too in Career Coaching or even determine if it’s right for you! Our plan is for this to be a multi-season podcast. This first season is going to be full of experienced career coaches sharing their story and lessons. Our goal is to help you get a realistic picture of what it’s like to be career coach and how you can get started. As we bring these experts on, we’ll ask them questions like: What prompted you make the decision to become a career coach? What qualifies you to be a career coach? What qualifications do you need to become a career coach? How did you overcome this? What were the biggest tools or resources to help you get started? How did you know it was time to make the leap? (scared or don’t know how to get clients) What gave you the confidence to become a career coach? How did you get your first clients? If you had 3 months to start your business and get into career coaching instead of the months or years it would take-- what would you do? Let me give you a glimpse into what a day in the life of a career coach actually looks like. Then you can see what it’s really like inside a successful coaching business during the first year I was full time as a career coach. That year we brought in $153,502 (keep in mind there are expenses in running a business so not all of this is profit). Later on I brought other coaches into the business and started doing much less of the career coaching myself. DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FULL TIME CAREER COACH I personally love this stuff. It’s fun for me. I’ve helped many coaches grow a practice of their own that also love it, but that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. It truly takes the type of person that is intuitive, enjoys having continuous conversations about careers and life. Also someone cares enough about other people to go the extra mile to help them make sure they get the results they want. Now here’s something that’s counterintuitive! It’s actually a good “sign” that you might be the type of person who would be successful by being a career coach if you’re a little bit scared about whether or not you can deliver the results that you would want for your clients - Great Career Coaches think about and obsess over that stuff! Also if you are willing to go the extra mile for people even though you’re nervous about whether or not you can deliver! (Sometimes I still have that feeling to this day because I badly want the people we work with to have an amazing experience!) People who wouldn’t make great coaches aren’t even thinking about that sort of thing! Check out the Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Career Coach!

You will be able to gain insight as we talk to experienced career coaches, exploring how it really is to be a career coach, the challenges they overcame and many lessons learned along the way. Today we are in discussion with Kathy Caprino, who is helping people make significant career moves as a career coach. Kathy talks about how she has created a multi-faceted portfolio of guiding people’s careers which is not only limited to coaching. In today’s episode you will be able to hear - Kathy’s struggle in her corporate career, the downturns that left her unemployed and the reasons she finally decided to step out of her marketing career and transitioned towards coaching. Her personal experience of seeking guidance from a career counsellor, and the effect it had on her career choices. Her journey of going back to college to pursue therapy, and eventually realizing her interests lied in coaching instead. Why she transitioned again from being a therapist to a life coach? How her initial coaching practice naturally inclined towards career coaching specifically. Explored becoming a speaker because she wanted to impact people’s lives and she was good at it. She pioneered a workshop where she could speak to a wider audience. The importance of being comfortable with the business of working with people. Starting out her coaching journey through five pro bono cases, and the lessons she learnt from these choices. Realizing the difference between coaching and therapy, a few years after she had been coaching. Her insights into how there should be a difference between consulting and coaching. Why it is vital to understand the two terms cannot be mutual. The importance of career change, how people transform to pursue coaching as a career. Kathy explains one cannot coach everything. Every coach needs to find a niche, and work towards becoming a leader within that niche. Being brave, and making bold decisions in your career, even if you start out small initially. She started out with talking to 100 women professionals and the difficulties they face in the workplace. Serving and being generous to your clients, giving importance to business development in the initial stages, instead of stressing on making money. How she has learnt that you need to create a balance between giving enough value to clients and not being overly generous to them. Creating boundaries with clients that you are comfortable with, not overcompensating or being held responsible for their actions. Today being a coach means building an online entrepreneurial venture. Why building a coaching business locally is detrimental, rethinking it because you will never fill your pipeline. The common misconception that being a multi-faceted coach will lead to an identity crisis. Developing a baseline foundation of what niche of coaching you want to enter. Embracing the entrepreneurial mind set and master all the aspects of doing a business such as sales and marketing. The value of creating quality content for your business, and how it will help augment your business efficiently. To find out more about Kathy and connect with her visit her website where you can also learn about her programs and submit your own story. On the How to Become a Career Coach podcast, we have two career coaches at the podcasting table. On one side of that table is Phillip Migyanko. Phillip had a history in HR and the hiring process. As a result, he developed a curiosity about people’s careers, how they work, their relationships, etc. In his pursuit to become an expert in careers, Phillip not only had a dream to do an awesome Ted Talk, but also loved to have conversations about careers. He especially loved helping people get to these “Aha” moments. This lead him to start his own career coaching business. On the other side of the table, we have Scott Anthony Barlow. Scott is well...me. That’s right. But this time, I’m not the host! Phillip joined me today, but flipped the table around and took my seat as the host! I was relieved that it was not a Black Ops interrogation. Over the past couple months, I’ve shared a little about my personal story, but I’ve generally been focusing on the path that other career coaches have taken. Today, I get the chance to share more about my personal path to becoming a career coach, which was almost 20 years in the making! I share the multiple changes I made in college and in different careers (including starting a painting business while in college). After multiple career moves, unhappiness, unhealthiness, and medical issues, I realized that I HAD to do something. Not only did this path eventually lead me to becoming a career coach, but I started a career coaching business and now help others become career coaches. I have gotten to know Christie Mims over the over the years and really respect the business that she's built around career coaching around helping people with their careers in a variety of different ways. And we'll get to bring her on and showcase not just her story, and how this has happened for her. But some of the ways that I would say she has even really, really crafted that, that fit within her business I'm going to go so far as to say, shaped the industry in a lot of different ways. Christie was a fancy pants consultant in DC. And she got to the point where she was just miserable. And her career, even though it was really lucrative, and she felt all this guilt. And so Christie started investigating all these other careers: she was looking at becoming a shoe designer; there was a brief period where she thought maybe she just wanted to work for Bravo TV, and produce the real housewives. But one thing that Christie also looked into was coaching, because a lot of the consultants she worked with were getting certified as coaches. And it seemed like an interesting career. And it was something that she thought would be at least she could use it as a consultant. So as part of her career research when she was investigating different job paths, Christie signed up for a coaching weekend, and she was super cynical. But she showed up and just fell in love with it. It was like being in the desert. And then all of a sudden someone offers you a glass of water. And it was amazing. But she was terrified when she quit her job to start coaching full-time. "So I was continuing as a consultant and I started to set up some business stuff, but I was still I was still pretty afraid. So nothing happened right away. But eventually, I mustered up my courage to quit my job and go full time as the coach because I just, you know, was looking around thinking, I was on the DC metro, and I was just thinking, like, Am I going to wake up 10 years from now, because these people look like they died 10 years ago, you know, I just gonna wake up 10 years from now. And just cuz, you know, is this my life like I at least have to try? I owe it to myself to try." But Christie started her career coaching business anyway. Her business grew and adapted over the years. On the podcast today, she not only shares about the struggles and fears she had to overcome, but also gives practical advice for those just getting started - and to start in a way that won't overwhelm you in the process. “My overall definition of success is helping other people succeed.” Allison Curbow has staked this claim for herself. Her journey to become a career coach started only 18 months ago. Allison went from being a person with a background that was scattered between different industries, and who lived in an environment where entrepreneurship was considered a scary and alien entity. “I was in Oil and Gas industry, and I was in sales industry, and home construction, and wielding, and procurement – all over the board. It drove me crazy.” Having liked some things in every job she had taken up, but not being a fan of everything in any one of those, she set out to find something that satisfied her and suited her. “I didn’t even know what it would require me to decide who I wanna be. I was just blindly walking along, without knowing that I had to decide in myself what kind of life I wanted. I didn’t realize how much I was following other people’s perceptions of what I should do.” 18 months ago, she had no clue that career coaching was going to be the career path for her, but she knew that something was missing. She found the Happen To Your Career podcast, and joined Career Change Bootcamp shortly afterwards. She later heard about the first cohort of our Professional Career Coach Training and Certification program. Intrigued, she joined the live webinar and was hooked. Allison joined that first cohort of PCC, learning so much about how to become a career coach. She not only works as a career coach, she is now also on the Happen To Your Career team. Having opened his eyes to a world of extreme poverty combined with the life-threatening situations of Civil War, Luis Velasquez suffered through and survived 3 brain tumors, lost his career and his relationships, and still found the resilience in him to “bloom where he was planted.” This resilience expert explains his life as a series of severe and happy accidents that taught him how to thrive, rather than just survive. Along the way, Luis learned several important lessons: I don’t wanna be fearless. I wanna fear less. And by assuming I wanna fear less, it gives me permission not to be perfect. It gives me permission to be messy. So, I seek improvement rather than perfection. Satisfaction comes from outside: you always want more. Fulfillment is internal: you don’t need all the money in the world to have that. You can find it at any level. For me, what has made the difference in surviving and thriving is understanding that I have choices and that I can adapt to whatever situation I have. I have a mother who says that I can’t control the rain, but I can control if I get wet or not. Optimism, a mindset of abundance, being grateful for what you have, and being resourceful about the options that are available to you, helps you thrive, rather than just survive. “The idea that you are a work in progress helps you be resilient. Possibilities are endless; whatever is going on in your life, this too shall pass. Focus on what you can control, don’t try to battle what you can’t control. My wife and I were deciding whether we should have children, because my world can change completely from one year to next, and one day I said: I don’t want my death to rule my life.” To binge-listen to all the Career Coach episodes: https://www.happentoyourcareer.com/how-to-become-a-career-coach-podcast/ Or check our our Professional Career Coach Training program Check out the Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Career Coach!

Last week, I shared a conversation I had with our Director of Client Success, Phillip. Specifically, I shared that the fact that too many coaches try to learn everything, and this one things trips up new coaches and delays their ability to help and impact people's lives. Well, this week, I had a conversation with Kimberly Ramsawak, who helps give us a solution to this. We had the privilege of helping Kimberly with her coaching business (even before we officially started our Professional Career Coach Training and Certification program). She never had a desire to become a career coach, or an entrepreneur for that matter. She spent over 20 years in the corporate world, largely working in marketing and sales. A lot of her work led to travel a lot around the world (in some cases, this made friends and family jealous). After a string of different changes, she ended up in the tourism and travel industry. Once, she was asked by student about how to get into the industry, so Kimberly helped her craft her resume, which led to her getting a travel job with more than a $30,000 raise. That's when it clicked for her. She realized that there was an opportunity to help people by creating extreme value (a $30,000 raise with a job you love is pretty substantial)! Kimberly didn't waste time by trying to learn everything - she just took what she already knew. She began helping others get into the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. Then in 2014, she formalized her coaching business and began to narrow and fine-tune her target market. Again, notice that she didn't have to know everything about every industry. Kimberly just took her own experience in the travel and tourism industries to help people. She leaned into her own experience and passion to start and grow her coaching business. You can do the same thing - look at your own history and experience. Look at your own likes and strengths. Specifically look at where they intersect. Do you see that niche of people that you can help? It might not be a big group, but it's enough for you to help. Out of all the examples of career coaches that I've shared with you, many of them didn't realize their passion for coaching until they were in their career for at least a few years (sometimes a couple decades). Sarah is an exception to that. She identified her desire to "help individuals find careers where they thrive" when she was 21 and in college. Granted, she didn't know exactly how this would play out, and she came across some fantastic opportunities and some hard road blocks. Sarah actually came on the How to Become a Career Coach podcast to share how she got into career coaching. "How do you determine what to charge for coaching?" "Should I do one-on-one coaching or group coaching?" "What if my target market can't afford my rates? Do I go broke, or do I just lose out on clients?" (and they don't get the help they need) These are common questions that new coaches often ask. In fact, these are questions that all coaches face when they hit a plateau or brick wall in finding new clients. While it's important to address these issues, realize that there is not just a single answer. You will probably be looking for an 'AND' solution. Listen to hear how Jennifer found a way to help her target market (also create additional benefits for clients), make it affordable for their financial situation, AND also provided the income she needed for herself. Many people that think their dream is impossible. Sharissa Sebastian had been in the tech industry for years, but was wanting to make a transition out of that field. She was eventually introduced to coaching through Groupon. Her coach began talking with her about what her ideal situation would look like, but she was holding herself back. She didn't think that "ideal" wouldn't be realistic. But Sharissa's coach asked her, "But what if it is possible?" Allison was on the How to Become a Career Coach podcast about two months ago. She shared a lot about her journey to become a career coach, which started by going through our Career Change Bootcamp (CCB) program, where she identified that career coaching was her direction. Soon after identifying this, she enrolled in our Professional Career Coach Training and Certification program, targeting to finish in September 2019. She was all set for having herself setup for her coaching career business. It was then a few months later when she came on the podcast and shared her journey. But, then, a week later, Allison had an emotional breakdown. She started to feel overwhelmed by the thought that "everyone" is becoming a career coach, so how would she distinguish herself from all the others. This is a real problem for anyone starting a business, especially a service-based business like career coaching. How do you differentiate yourself? What is your Unique Selling Proposition? Why would someone choose to work with you instead of _____? Allison soon had a breakthrough when she began going back over her training for CCB. In CCB, you go through exercises to identify what it is you really want and who you want to work with/for. You also identify your Signature Strengths. Going through and reviewing these exercise with the lens of career coaching gave her the perspective she needed to identify her niche - how she would stand out in the sea of career coaches. Allison shares this new breakthrough on the HBCC podcast today, so listen to hear the details of how she went through this. So, if you're thinking about becoming a career coach, the Professional Career Coach Training and Certification program will help you: Know how to work with a large variety of people in nearly any industry to help them identify their own ideal career. Understand a process and a framework to lead any client through nearly any situation OR when to help them get additional resources Have everything you need to get your first clients or get a role with a company you want to work with. Also, if you enroll in PCC you get access to all the CCB modules that Allison did, too. So you'll have even more resources to help you dig deeper and make your career coaching foundation even stronger and give you more clarity.
