But there are still major causes for concern at Bramall Lane after Chris Wilder’s first game in charge saw the Blades extend their losing start to the season to six games, conceding late on to lose 1-0 at home to Charlton.

Leeds United’s firepower concerns AND dissecting the latest Yorkshire derby in League One between Bradford City and Huddersfield Town

On this week’s show we look back over the summer transfer window and determine who Yorkshire’s winners and losers were when it came to making deals, holding on to prized assets and missing out on desired targets. Before that, we also look back at a weekend which brought us THREE Yorkshire derbies - Middlesbrough versus Sheffield United in the Championship and League One tussles between Barnsley and Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers at home to Rotherham United. We also discuss the promising start made to the third-tier campaign by four of Yorkshire’s teams - Bradford City, Doncaster, Barnsley and Huddersfield - who head into the international break occupying all of the League One play-off berths.

Still no points for Sheffield United but some good news arrives with a step up in signings at Bramall Lane. A good night for most of Yorkshire's clubs in the EFL Cup, preceded a third round draw which offers numerous opportunities for giant-killing performances. And we cast an eye over the decision by York City to sack manager Adam Hinshelwood, just four games into the season.

The FootballTalk team assess the big change at Bramall Lane which sees Chris Wilder depart before the Blades board appoint former Hull City boss Ruben Selles as his replacement Recorded: June 19, 2025

On this week’s show, - the last one covering the 2024-25 season for Yorkshire's clubs - The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Tom Coates join host Mark Singleton to pick over the agonising 2-1 loss for Sheffield United in Saturday’s Championship play-off final against Sunderland at Wembley and how they bounce back to ensure an automatic promotion spot come the end of the 2025-26 season. It is also time for our Championship review, as we assess the respective campaigns of Leeds United (brilliant), Middlesbrough (so-so), Sheffield Wednesday (frustrating) and Hull City (disappointing).
Sheffield United plan for their date with destiny as they prepare to take on Sunderland in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, with our panel of Stuart Rayner, Leon Wobschall and host Mark Singleton assessing the Blades’ chances of securing a return to the Premier League. They also ponder what is next for Hull City after the sacking of head coach Ruben Selles, who despite keeping the Tigers up on goal difference on the final day of the season, still found himself clearing his desk at the MKM Stadium. We also cast an eye over the heartache for York City and FC Halifax Town, who both fell to Oldham Athletic in the National League play-offs, before they review the respective League one campaigns – all disappointing – of Huddersfield Town, Barnsley and Rotherham United.
On this week’s show, our panel start by looking at Sheffield United clinching their place in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday, May 24 with a convincing 6-0 aggregate win over Bristol City. They will face Sunderland, who beat Coventry City over two legs.Stuart Rayner, Leon Wobschall and host Mark Singleton also cast their eyes over the retained lists released by Yorkshire’s clubs so far before turning their attention to a potential National League play-off semi-final meeting between Yorkshire rivals York City and FC Halifax Town. They finish by reflecting on Yorkshire’s League Two campaign – one made memorable by the automatic promotion achieved by champions Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City.
On this week’s podcast, The YP’s football writing team look back over the Championship-winning campaign of Leeds United – a feat clinched on the final day of the regular season with a thrilling win at Plymouth Argyle – what made the Whites they champions they are and how will they fare back in the Premier League after two seasons away? There is also time to salute the job done by Bradford City and their manager Graham Alexander after they joined League Two champions Doncaster Rovers in earning promotion back up to the third tier of English football. What next for Hull City after escaping relegation from the Championship by goal difference and how will Sheffield United fare in the play-offs after coming home third in the standings.
In this week’s show, The YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton once again, starting off in the only place possible – Leeds United’s promotion back to the Premier League. They also look ahead to Sheffield United’s play-off challenge as they look to join their Yorkshire rivals in the top tier. What next for Huddersfield Town as their already-fading League One play-off hopes are finally extinguished, while the panel assess Barnsley’s decision to appoint Conor Hourihane on a permanent basis as their head coach. In League Two, we preview this Saturday’s Yorkshire showdown between Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City – both teams gunning for promotion AND the title. As ever, there is also time to pick a Team of the Week and a Player of the Week.
With Leeds United having edged out hosts Middlesbrough in midweek – returning to the top of the Championship table, while harming their rivals’ play-off chances – The YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall ponder where the respective promotion hopes of both clubs lie. Two 1-0 defeats for Sheffield United are not what the doctor ordered but the Blades very much remain in the three-horse race for the two automatic promotion spots, with just five games remaining. Can they recover in order to edge out rivals Leeds or Burnley? And what next for Sheffield Wednesday both on and off the pitch, with hopes of a late play-off push all but gone and stories of players not being paid surfacing in recent days. Is a change of ownership the only way the Owls can take things to the next level?Huddersfield Town’s hopes of getting back into play-off contention in League Two suffered a further blow with defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers, leaving them four points off sixth spot with five games to play.
In this week’s show, the YP football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and start off by looking at the race for automatic promotion in the Championship, the past week seeing Sheffield United get their noses in front, thanks to their impressive Friday night win over Coventry City, while Leeds United slipped up by conceding a late equaliser at home to Swansea City the following day. Elsewhere, Doncaster Rovers ensured their hopes of automatic promotion from League Two remain in their own hands, following up a 3-0 win over Carlisle United with a 2-2 draw against leaders Walsall. There are growing concerns for Huddersfield Town’s play-off hopes in League One after defeats to Charlton Athletic and Lincoln City which saw them fail to score a single goal.Steve Evans’ second period in charge at Rotherham United ended badly when he was sacked after a dispiriting 4-0 defeat at home to struggling Crawley Town. Replacement Matt Hamshaw enjoyed a promising start to his interim spell in charge, though, with the Millers winning 2-0 at Northampton Town. Also, Leon plumps for a Team of the Week this time around, while Stuart focuses on the standout Player of the Week.
