On this season-ending bonus episode of Papal Bull: Resurrection, hosts merritt k and Eric Thurm look back on their time with The New Pope, the characters they love, and where they imagine things could possibly go from here. How are John and Sophia doing, after all? They also give a little teaser of things to come from the crew, so stay tuned next week as well.
It seems like only yesterday that we were meeting the new pope, and then the second new pope… on our The New Pope companion podcast. The season has ended, but Features and Trending Editor merritt k and Chief Liturgical Correspondent Eric Thurm are not done. Join them as they discuss the positively wild events of the finale, the nature of power, and much, much more. This may be the end of the season, but it's not the end of the podcast. Join us again next week for a special surprise.
While Fanbyte Features and Trending Editor merritt k and Chief Liturgical Correspondent Eric Thurm did not have a guest today, they do have a ton to talk about in their recap of an action-packed episode of The New Pope. Lenny is back, baby, making for some major confusion at the Vatican. Fan favorite Gutierrez has a wonderful moment, and Voiello tells a certain someone off for their "uneasy somersaults" in one of the wildest moments of the season. There's much more to dig into, so sit comfortably and enjoy your hour with the Papal Bull.
From the new opening credits that allude to a Jewish Pope to a central character named Eric in the episode itself, Papal Bull co-host (and Fanbyte's Chief Liturgical Correspondent) Eric Thurm knows that this episode is very much for him. He's joined, as always, by Fanbyte's Features and Trending Editor merritt k, and this week, by writer Jorge Cotte, for an examination of an incredibly intense episode of The New Pope. We have so many baptisms in this one.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is good! But Advent Children, the 2005 movie that acts as a direct sequel to FF7 (though, spoiler alert, perhaps not Remake) is absolutely not. Steven, John and Danielle go on the terrible journey with Cloud Strife and Yazoo ("the quietest Remnant") that fails to make much of a positive impression on our panel. It does, however, provide excellent fodder for discussion of Square Enix, the Final Fantasy series, and where the franchise was at that point in time. It may not be a great movie, but we think it made for some good discussion!
We've got an anime heavy episode this week for all you listeners. Although it doesn't take the form you might expect... Besides that, though, we've also got some hot, old games to talk about as Niki, merritt, Danielle, and Steven all four got into some old (and reimagined) titles. Hear all about them and more on episode 59 of Fanwidth!
Danielle and Niki welcome Fanbyte's Weekend Writer Natalie Flores to Island Life, to discuss bunny day fallout, how Animal Crossing is really a meanness simulator, and the life and times of Pietro. You either love him or hate him, but he's a very interesting villager, that's for sure.
Danielle and John dive all the way in to current Netflix Obsession Tiger King, a documentary about the deeply messed-up folks who collect big cats in America. It's focussed on a few key players, but especially the Tiger King himself: Joe Exotic, a gun-toting, queer, country-singing, eccentric zoo owner in Oklahoma currently serving a long prison sentence for Murder-for-Hire. The documentary is fantastic, manipulative as hell, and wildly, wildly entertaining.
We've got video games galore on this latest episode of Fanwidth, the Fanbyte podcast! You won't believe your ears when we regale you with news of Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil 3, and other PlayStation 1 games. In all seriousness, though, it's a packed show. We even take some time to talk about anime and manga at the end. But to kick things off, what's up with the NEW PlayStation controller? Let's find out on Fanwidth Episode 58.
In our second installment of Island Life — the podcast where Fanbyte staffers chat about Animal Crossing: New Horizons — we are all more than a little scared of the "Bunny Day" guy, Zipper T Rabbit. Niki tried to imprison him, but it didn't work. And ol' Zips put so many weird eggs all over our islands that John, LB, and Danielle don't even know what to do with them. Also, Niki beat the game. But he still couldn't keep that bunny caged…
Hello island villagers! The Fanbyte crew is fishing, rancho-hunting, and vibing through Animal Crossing New Horizons and we wanted to talk to each other about our experiences, fashions, and creations in the game. Join us every week for the foreseeable future as we chill around the beach bonfire and talk about fossils and stuff.
Today, in honor of all that sweet, sweet SEO, we decided to watch Doom (2005), a movie that we knew wasn't great, exactly, starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike. Oh man. It's not… very good. Trading demons for… some kind of zombie creatures, Aliens' space marines for… far worse space marines, and anything resembling a decent plot for… whatever happens here, it's kind of a mess. It does have The Rock though, and he sure does his best.
This week, our hosts actually went out and saw a somewhat recent movie in theaters, for a change! It's time to talk about Birds of Prey -- a Harley Quinn vehicle with a splash of other DC Comics characters in the mix. The film is a joyful, messy ride, and we're very excited to talk about the many things it does better than most DC cinematic fare! What exactly makes this action romp so wonderful? Let's find out on another episode of You Love to See It!
We're all going just a little stir crazy this week, as the L.A. team moves to a work from home schedule during the outbreak of COVID-19. But that just means more mayhem in the usual Fanbyte way. Plus games are finally coming out, which is perfect timing, and gave us plenty to discuss as we move through what we played and what we're looking forward to soon. Have you heard of this hot new jam called Halo 2? Well, we promise that's not all we talk about on Fanwidth, the Fanbyte podcast this week!
The Satanic Temple might not be what you think it is. It was founded in the last decade by a bunch of folks who wanted to use Satanism as a symbol for tolerance and religious pluralism in the US, and this documentary takes a light touch towards founder Lucien Greaves and his collaborators as they navigate religious freedom cases and the spectacle of protest. John, Merritt, and Danielle went in on the filmmaking in the piece itself, the philosophy behind the Satanic Temple's activism, and the use of particularly eye-catching iconography to make its points. We also WENT IN on the ST's seven tenets. For… reasons.
Horse crimes abound in this latest episode of Fanwidth. After that, though, the gang is ready to discuss some of the big news today: from the NFL license to Sega and VR games. Eventually we find the time to sneak in discussion of plenty of games, too! It's truly a jam packed episode as we all distract ourselves from the latest round of votes in the Democratic primary. But there's no distracting us from that horse... Seriously, that thing is messed up. Find out why on Fanwidth Episode 54!
Welcome to a sample of the Fanfyte podcast, where MMA fan (and Fanbyte Senior Editor) and Pro Wrestling aficionado (and Fanfyte section head) LB Hunktears come together, show each other a fight or event from their respective disciplines, and enjoy the exchange of beautiful violence together. There's a whole Fanfyte Feed if you enjoy the show, check it out on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! This week, LB gave Danielle her favorite match yet, a high-flying, acrobatic, positively wild match between goth skater boi Darby Allin and adorable heel Sammy Guevara, which resulted in so many shattered tables. Then, Danielle brought LB a real heartbreaker of a fight in UFC 245's Uriah Faber vs. Petr Yan, spoiling some of the California Kid's forward momentum in his "un-retirement."
We have a very special treat this week. Thanks to John and Niki's exposure to Playing with Fire on a cross-country flight after PAX, the crew decided to go ahead and do an episode on it. Join us for a discussion of this goofy, buck wild ride with John Cena as a Smoke Jumper (not your everyday firefighter!), and his buddies (including Keegan Michael Key and John Leguizamo) at a remote fire outpost. There are adorable moppets, there's poop, there's fire, and there are a whole lot of John Cena beefcake shots. It's a potent brew, you might say.
Your regular Fanwidth podcast crew is back again this week after a very, very long trip to PAX East. It's a short and pretty relaxed episode this week, as we let our brains recover from the absolute hell we put them through during the Boston show. As such, we talk about the ways in which we all decompress after a long business trip, the games we played, pets, and other things that make us happy! And we'll be back again next week with even more. Thanks for listening!
Steven Strom sat down with John Warren to discuss Final Fantasy VII Remake, which John got to play for over three hours at a recent press event. This near-final build of the game has a lot the general public hasn't seen yet, so let's dive in!
