Women are not wired to be nurturing, we're socially conditioned to. Logically it makes perfect sense for men to be nurturing as fathers but society encourages men to be hands-off parents and force the mother to do most of the work, so you don't get to see them do it as much. Women are if anything wired to be protectors.
