Episode 33 - Deetlefs Delivers by Rayder Media

AJ Spieringshoek took the opportunity of being called up as an assistant coach for the National team in 2019, including mentoring the Emerging South Africa side during the SPAR Indoor Series in Durban. He continues to take every opportunity to learn. At the 2020 Indoor IPT he led Western Province to their first Indoor IPT final in many years. During the tournament I caught up with AJ to chat all things hockey as well as ultra distance running, the Unogwaja Challenge and the travel industry.

Carrying on with both our #LockdownListening and #Hockey24Seven Tour and next up is goal scoring ace Chad Futcher. Its been a whirlwind year for the Wits University hot shot earning himself a first test cap in both the indoor and outdoor national sides. At the Indoor Hockey IPT in Ballito I got to chat to Chad about all things hockey, his goal scoring exploits, the challenge of club hockey and the importance of his upbringing in the Eastern Gauteng hockey community.

This time its Player of the tournament Kelly Reed, just six months after giving birth to her first child. Hockey 24 Seven on tour continues as Jabu chats to Namibian and Mpumalanga Ace Liam Hermanus about his life in hockey. The Osaka star ended the tournament as the top goal scorer for the unfancied Mpumalanga, lighting up the court in Ballito. Who would Hermanus pick in his dream indoor team, and what does he think of life in Johannesburg and playing for Ricky West.

David Joshua was named as the national head coach of the SA Mens Indoor Hockey side and promptly led them to a 5-0 series victory against top 10 nation Switzerland. Speaking to Jabu at the Indoor Hockey IPT in Durban, David speaks about the plans ahead, his goals as national coach and of course the tournament itself. Kim Hubach has done it all for South African Hockey. Having played more than 100 times for the national team, including at two FIH Hockey World Cups, the Northern Blues faithful continues to live for the game with the Hubach Hockey Academy now in full swing. At the 2019 Senior IPT Kim was honoured by her province for playing in her 20th consecutive IPT tournament that was crowned with victory in the final against their Southern Gauteng neighbours. Kim joined Derek and Jabu to chat all things hockey, the highs, the lows and what it means to have played 20 IPT tournaments.

In 2019 Nic Spooner become a household name in South African Hockey. He scored the match-winning goal against the USA in the FIH Series Finals, a game that essentially qualified South Africa for the Tokyo Olympics. He did it with just 23 seconds left on the clock. A few months later he bagged a hat-trick in the African Hockey Road to Tokyo final game against Egypt to cement that Olympic Spot. Having played in the Hockey India League and in the German top league for a number of years it was a thrilling opportunity for the Hockey 24 Seven duo to sit down and chat all things hockey with Spoons.

It's been almost a year since Garreth "Springs" Ewing was appointed as the SA National Hockey Men's coach and what a year it was. South Africa qualified for the Tokyo Olympic games through making the final of the FIH Hockey Series Final as well as winning the African Hockey Road to Tokyo Event in Stellenbosch. Derek and Jabu sat down at Grind Coffee Shop with "Springs" to chat all things hockey. In his second interview with the Hockey 24 Seven team he offered his thoughts on the Olympic Games, the importance of an SA "A" structure, the upcoming Summer Series at Ashton College in Ballito as well as the series against Germany at Wits. Ayden Shrives became the first man in international hockey to have played, and umpired at the Indoor Hockey World Cup. "Shrivesy" stepped into studio with the Hockey 24 Seven team to chat all things hockey, the Belgotex Elite Club Challenge, Indoor Hockey challenges as well as life as a businessman and father.

Tyson Dlungwana is just 22 years of age but can already include a Commonwealth Games, African Cup and Hockey World Cup on his impressive hockey CV. Ahead of the 2019 African Hockey Road to Tokyo Qualifying Event Derek and Jabu sat and chatted all things hockey (and a little bit of football) with the South African star. Unfortunately due to a foot injury Tyson was ruled out of the Stellenbosch event, which South Africa won and secured a place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo for 2020. Dlungwana will now be looking to make that squad and help his hockey CV shine even more.

Austin Smith is one of the few South African Hockey players to have made a career out of the game. In episode 22, now available on YouTube as well, Smith talks about his hockey career, his Olympic ambitions, the Difference between Beijing and London and being stuck on 99 games as captain of the national hockey team! We also chat about life in the Hoofdklasse, building a future and Olympic goals. It’s a thrilling chat with one of South Africa’s finest servants and will leave you more full of admiration than before!

Sanani Mangisa enjoyed a superb hockey career, representing South Africa on 112 occassions before calling it quits at the relatively young age of 29. She has become a role model for the likes of current national 'keeper Phumi Mbande as well as many aspiring young players around the country. Jabu and Derek sat down with "Sans" and spoke about all things hockey, her passion for golf, her dream golfing four-ball and the challenges that come with being a national hockey player. There may also be a commitment to run the Comrades Marathon...

Recently the Hockey 24 Seven team, in collaboration with Rayder Media, were invited to the SPAR Indoor Series at Danville Girls School in Durban North. While watching SPAR South Africa take on Zimbabwe and Botswana, we were fortunate enough to also see the next batch of superstars take to the court for SPAR Emerging South Africa. In this episode Jabu and Derek sat down with six members of the squad including Andrea Leader, Nompilo Thenjwayo and Cloe de Sousa. We discussed all things hockey as well as the thrill of being able to wear national colours, while the young ladies also dished some dirt on their team mates! Give it a listen now!

The FIH Hockey Series Finals in Valencia is upon us, and Supergroup South Africa kick-start their campaign against Wales. Supergroup hosted a farewell function for the team ahead of the tournament at Bryanston Country Club and Jabu and Derek were lucky enough to join the festivities. Of course the night wasn't just about the vibe, as the guys got to chat to a host of players, because thats how Hockey 24 Seven rolls! In this episode we caught up with Marizen Marais, Matshepo Modipane, Kristen Paton, skipper Erin Hunter and team youngster Bianca Wood, while there was also a sneaky little cameo from Kara Stella-Botes.

At the Super Group send-off for the SA Women's Hockey team, Jabu and Derek sat down with assistant coach Inky Zondi and SA Hockey CEO Marissa Langeni to discuss the upcoming challenge in Spain, the Olympic qualification route, the 2019 hockey calendar and of course the importance of Super Group.

Jerrica and Kiana are at two opposite ends of the experience spectrum, but the sisters share a bond that goes far further than the hockey field. In this entertaining chat the sisters school Jabu and Derek about all things Namibia, discuss sibling rivalry and debate as to who the better singer is. The Jerrijam fact of the day is also revealed which will now be a permanent feature on the Hockey 24 Seven podcast. Both sisters also had to answer a One Question Quiz fact pertaining to the the other's career - who got it right?
