We're one week away from National #LoveYourRedHairDay weekend and we have one more episode dropping on November 3rd! We're having some of our favorite conversations to wrap up the season and we'd like everyone to welcome Laura Jackel to the How to be a Redhead podcast! She's the Senior Lifestyle Writer at Mamamia, Australia’s super channel for women. She is also a mum of two boys and a former natural redhead. She recently wrote an article titled: 'I've been blonde, brunette and a redhead. There's one colour I would not go back to.' She details how she was born with natural red hair and journeyed through different hair colors. We are so excited for you to enjoy this interesting conversation. Some of the questions we asked her:Why did you write this article? And how was it to reflect on your hair journey? You write about now turning gray, saying, “The graying remains of my natural ginger hair are for now, still under my cool blonde highlights and I feel nostalgic and sad about the fact I didn't embrace its natural shade for longer than I did." We read your son is a natural redhead -- do you share tips with him on self-acceptance?“As a ginger-haired, pale, and freckle-faced kid, I would have done anything to change my hair color and complexion. I faced plenty of teasing for being a redhead..” Now for the question we ask our redhead guests: what was it like for you growing up as a redhead? From reading your article, it seems like it was not pleasant. You say you went back to red for your wedding and for the birth of your child. It made us wonder how your husband feels (or felt then) about your natural red hair and if he influenced you to go back to your natural red hair?We found it interesting you went from red to blonde to brunette, saying, “But in my late 20s when I decided I wanted to be taken more seriously at work, I completed the hair trifecta and became a brunette.” Tell us more.As we mentioned before, you went back to red for the birth of your child in 2010. Why?Now for the present day, you’re blonde. We wanted to read the last sentence of the article to listeners. You say, “Perhaps in years to come, I will branch out and embrace my greys or even try a candy pink, but right now I'm comfortable as a blonde."What advice do you have for redheads, no matter their age, struggling with their identity? Do you recommend trying a new hair color or embracing you?Links Mentioned in Article: Redheads Can Say Goodbye to Frizz with These 7 ProductsHow Redheads Can Combat Frizz in the Humid MonthsThese 4 Habits Could Be Causing Frizzy Red HairDaily, we get an array of questions from social media comments, emails, and direct messages. If you listen to us regularly, you know we did a different podcast flow for Episode 20. Usually, we chat, then we call our guest, we reflect on the guest after the conversation is over, and we end it with Q&A. For the 20th episode, we put together 2 interviews with coinciding topics. We heard great reviews, so we’re back to do it again with today’s episode! This time, we’re dedicating this special episode to those who dye their hair red. You could be a true redhead ‘by choice’ or a natural redhead wanting to be more vibrant. Today, we’re talking to a popular TikTok influencer, Ana Saia, who dyes her hair red and IG famous professional colorist, Amber Todaro, who specializes in dyeing hair red for her clients. She has been on social media for 2+ years now and has racked up over 2.8 million followers on TikTok (at the time of recording). We have a passion for beauty at H2BAR. We, Adrienne and Stephanie, grew up in an environment where many of the women around us were passionate about skincare, makeup, and beauty routines. It influenced us to start HowtobeaRedhead.com in 2012 and why we wanted to start the first-ever redhead beauty-focused podcast (the How to be a Redhead podcast) in 2018. We jump into specific topics all of the time and sometimes forget there are redheads out there without a deep background in beauty.Today's guest is Pam Cameron. We're so excited for you to meet our lovely, kind, natural-redhead podcast producer. Throughout 2023, we have had many conversations with Pam and she would ask us beauty-related questions. To kick off our 20th episode this season, we're doing something special today! It will be a different format because we're covering two important topics: how to donate your red hair + redhead wigs. To help us answer your questions, we have 2 different guests on today's episode: The first guest is Suzanne Chimera. She’s a native New Yorker and President/Co-Founder of HairWeShare. She founded it in 2014 after being a custom wig designer for twenty years. HairWeShare creates custom wigs for children AND adults with medical hair loss. This is important because many wig organizations only make wigs for kids – but HairWeShare makes wigs for adults + kids. Then, we called Jordan Fuelberth. You might be a redhead who refuses to see the dentist because you experience more pain. Do redheads actually feel more pain at the dentist? Is it a myth? Fact? We are speaking with Dr. Ethan Erwin today. He practices cosmetic and general dentistry, AND he's a natural redhead. He owns Smile Hot Springs in his hometown of Hot Springs, Arkansas. We asked him some of the following questions:According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, natural redheads have more anxiety about the dentist than people with dark hair due to their resistance to local anesthetics. As a redhead yourself, what was your experience like at the dentist? Are dentists being trained to expect differences in their redheaded patients? What would you say to a listener who has been avoiding the dentist for years due to anxiety? It can be really hard to tell a doctor, “I need more anesthesia”. They may look at you as if you’re crazy because they have never heard this fact before, or they may disregard you because they think you’re reading out another false fact from TikTok. What’s the best way to tell a doctor about redheads needing more anesthesia? What are some options patients can ask for that they may not know about? (Example: I didn’t know Dentists could prescribe a mild sedative like Valium. Some dentists offer laser fillings without any injections)Links and Articles Mentioned: Fear of the Dentist is Real: How Redheads Can Handle Dentist AppointmentsUltra Brite Advanced Whitening ToothpasteOpalescence Go10 Comebacks If You’re Ever Bullied About Your Red HairRedhead Studies LinkAre Mosquitos More Attracted to Red Hair? You might have been asked, "Aren't redheads going extinct?" It's a myth we're here to bust and our guest is Dr. Mark Elgar. We're calling him from Australia where he is a professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Melbourne. He earned his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and is a member of the Australian Evolution Society. His research focuses on animal behavior and evolutionary biology, specializing in animal mating and social behavior. As an evolutionary biologist, he is here to explain why redheads are NOT going extinct and why red hair + blue eyes is the rarest combo.Note: This episode was taped in March when Stephanie was pregnant. You may hear Stephanie talk about being pregnant, and post-pregnancy throughout the different episodes due to pre-recording. Spoiler: Her baby was not born with red hair. Here are some of the questions we ask him:1.In layman's terms, what is an evolutionary biologist?2.After reading the literature you have written about redheads, we thought this applied most to redheads, “Recessive genes can stay hidden for a long time.” So, let's address the myth of "redheads are going extinct." Are we a dying breed or not? Or, are redhead genes always going to be there?3.There is a big debate in the redhead community. Some say it’s red hair and green eyes that are the rarest. Why are red hair and blue eyes the rarest combination?4.Is red hair recessive in other mammals like cats and dogs or is it just humans?5.How can we know what someone's hair color was thousands of years ago without having seen a photograph? Is that something you can figure out from digging up skeletons and testing them, or how does that work?6.Our audience is obsessed with different shades of red hair. We usually say every shade is different, it’s almost like a unique fingerprint amongst redheads. You said in the article, “Redheads range from strawberry blonde, brownish auburn hair or flaming red tresses..” because the MCR1 gene is also a ‘quantitative trait’ which means that depending on which version of the mutation a person carries, there is variation in the appearance of those who carry the gene. Can you explain more?7.Are two redheaded parents guaranteed to have a redheaded child?Articles Mentioned:Are Redheads With Blue Eyes Really Going Extinct? Wigs can be made from a variety of materials, such as human hair, synthetic hair, or a mixture of materials. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here https://www.recoolhair.com/product-category/wigs/deep-wave-wig.html you can always find amazing options for human hair wigs. For example, human hair wigs are more natural-looking but require more maintenance, while synthetic wigs can be more affordable and require less maintenance.
