Jake Gyllenhaal was born in 1980 in Los Angeles, California. His father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is an Emmy nominated director, and his mother, Naomi Foner, is an Academy Award-nominated writer. In an interview with The Guardian, Gyllenhaal recalls director Steven Soderbergh renting a room above their garage before he became famous. Other interesting stories about early encounters with famous people in film include Paul Newman taking him to the race track and teaching him driving safety. Newman is not Gyllenhaal’s godfather, though, which is a fact that is often misreported. His godfather is Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit. Needless to say, Gyllenhaal was around the film industry growing up.

The industry was rocked by the recent passing of Hollywood great Sir Sean Connery, one of the greatest actors in the industry. He is most commonly known as the first and original James Bond, launching the wildly popular, currently seven-decade long-running franchise. He has played the character in seven movies which effectively launched him into superstardom. After retiring from Bond, he worked in various other acclaimed bodies of work before joining yet another popular franchise, Indiana Jones. He won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Jim Malone in the 1987 movie The Untouchables, which also starred Robert De Niro and Kevin Costner. Given his wildly successful career and his famously brash personality, in this piece, we will dive into the personality that was Sean Connery.

Seth Rogen is a comedy legend. He is a member of the VIP club in the realm of comedy gods. There are very few movies or TV shows he has starred in that don’t qualify as comedy gold. He hit the ground running starring in the classic sitcom Freaks and Geeks at the tender age of seventeen, and since then he has climbed his way up to the top of comedy Mt. Olympus by being hilarious, having moxie, and maybe bribing the guards at comedy Mt. Olympus with a little weed.

The saying a picture is worth a thousand words can be expertly utilized in film, but since the invention of sound in movies, the dialogue has been pivotal to the content a film can relay. A single line, much like a single picture, can speak volumes. Over the years, there have been many great writers in Hollywood. Likewise, many great films made their way into the zeitgeist and will forever be quoted. To break down the best dialogue in cinema, we will take two different approaches to look at the spoken word. One will focus on the overall dialogue in film. This list will include movies that are driven by their dialogue, whether by nuance or outright ferocity. The other list will focus on one-liners. This list will highlight the moments in film that blow away the viewer with one line of dialogue.

On August second, my phone lit up with a Twitter notification from the account @teamfrankdaily reading: “our hearts are shattered for Frank and his Family. Rest in peace @rryanbreaux”. Frank Ocean’s brother Ryan Breaux, along with Ryan’s friend Ezekial Bishop, had died in a car crash. Scanning the text on my phone, the words “Frank”, “hearts are shattered” and “rest in peace”, froze my world for the longest millisecond I’ve ever known. After carefully rereading, and discovering that it was Ryan who had passed, I sat in shock for a different reason. Although I do not know Frank or his brother, (and will not pretend to), I know pain. I owe Frank Ocean my current state as an artist and it’s time I personally give him his flowers. I am not an award show or an acclaimed music critic, I am just a fan whose life has changed with incredible music from a brilliant artist.

Celebrities have always been subject to the pendulum of relevance and obsession that’s always followed by equal amounts of disdain. Thanks to the internet, this process is not only accelerated, but it’s incredibly more obvious and we’re able to see a more dramatized rise and fall of celebrities. We’ve called this steep fall, canceling, or cancel culture. It can happen to business or products too; one minute this new brand is a hit on social media, the next it’s deemed problematic and outcasted. However, whether it’s a person, a product or business, “canceling” something or someone is often confused with consumers holding individuals and corporations accountable. When we remember that we don’t owe millionaire celebrities or multi-billion dollar corporations anything whatsoever, cancel culture doesn’t hold up; it isn’t real.

It comes as no surprise that Hollywood, along with many other fields has been dominated by men. However, this often leads us to neglect to explore the women who were involved in shaping the film industry from the past all the way to the present. Beginning with Old Hollywood and the first female director, here are 8 barrier-breaking women who worked behind the scenes in the film industry, who have each played a role in shaping cinema.

From his early work as a young artist in Even Stevens, to some of his more recent works of more matured variety, multi-artist Shia LaBeouf fetches our love with his dynamic career and boldly creative choices as we’ve watched him blossom throughout the years. Recently, at a comical virtual table read for Fast Times at Ridgemont High, he gifted us with some chuckles for charity as he gave a classic character, a Shia-like twist with his hilariously authentic portrayal of Jeff Spicoli (sporting a most-likely real joint and animated neon sunglasses). The performance was a hit, and despite the table read being cast with Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman, Henry Golding, and more, Shia LaBeouf stole the show. Trending with a lot of popularity on Twitter and social media, Shia is often praised for his commitment and character dedication.

Oliver Stone is the legendary filmmaker behind many spectacular films. His career spans decades, and his work has covered pivotal moments of history. Stone was born in New York City in 1946, where he spent a lot of his youth. He attended Yale briefly before dropping out to teach English in Vietnam. Stone went back to Yale for a short period before dropping out again and enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in 1967. He was a decorated soldier for his service, and when Stone returned to the States, he enrolled in NYU’s film school, where one of his teachers was Martin Scorsese.
