Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, landscape designer whose many credits include the new garden in Chapel Court at Hampton Court Palace and the redesigned Kensington Palace Gardens, talks to Jeremy Howard about London’s eccentric town gardeners of the 18th century such as William Stukeley, who was fascinated by Druids, and Joshua Brookes, who kept an eagle tethered to an extraordinary vivarium behind his residence in central London.
Colnaghi Foundation's latest podcast is a conversation about making art under lockdown, nudity and censorship in the 16th century and today, and more. With Amy Orrocks, curator of the new CRANACH: ARTIST AND INNOVATOR exhibition at Compton Verney, and Ishbel Myerscough, Claire Partington and Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, three of the contemporary artists whose work features alongside Cranach's.
The young David Bomberg (1890–1957) was one of the most audacious artists of his generation, expelled from the Slade School of Art in 1913 on account of his radical, geometric compositions. It may seem surprising, then, that Bomberg was a regular visitor to the National Gallery, which hosted an exhibition of some of his earliest paintings this year. In this conversation, hear curator Richard Cork and The Art Newspaper’s Louisa Buck discuss Bomberg’s work and the paintings by Old Masters such as Botticelli and Michelangelo which most inspired him.
The myth of the Trojan War has captivated people for thousands of years and has led pilgrims, explorers and archaeologists to search for the location where the famed conflict took place. But did the city really exist? Listen to the curators of the 2020 Troy exhibition at London’s British Museum, Victoria Donnellan and Alexandra Villing, explore the reality behind the myth.
