“If I hadn’t have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…”   The early 90’s was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal.    “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…”   While ANTHRAX began the 90’s with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX!    With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band’s output throughout the 80’s with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90’s due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80’s era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so.   “Alright, well it’s not like we’ve never done that for you before…”   Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it’s not as fun for me when I push away”. “You know what I’m hearing? This sounds like it could have been…the sidepiece…to The Black Album…”   There’s almost a strange, sarcastic satisfaction in knowing that the new self-titled MEGADETH album will forever be known (at least in our neck of the woods anyway) as “The White Album”.    “Every time you keep talking, I just see shapes and letters…”   Released on January 23, 2026, MEGADETH is the 17th studio album from Dave Mustaine and Company and represents the final chapter in the 40+ year history of the angriest, snarliest, and most progressively technical thrash band of The Big Four.    And oh yeah, it debuted at NUMBER ONE on Billboard and at the top of the charts all over the world!!!   While MEGADETH represents the band’s epilogue, it contains all of the elements that have defined the band’s sound and the ethos of the genre that they co-created with the rest of The Big Four. All of the essentials are there: insanely technical riffs, face melting guitar solos, triumphant twin guitar harmonies, as well as some more straight ahead, laid back and accessible material that screams “radio friendly” without being dull or boring. If you’re a fan, you’ll dig it. And if you’re not a fan, who knows? Once you reach a certain level, there is no ‘better’…it’s different.”   Released on August 19, 1983, FLICK OF THE SWITCH (the 9th studio album by AC/DC and the 3rd featuring Brian Johnson on the mic) is what some fans might call their “White Album” (arriving after their “Black Album” and “Bronze Album”, respectively), showing a black and white grayscale drawing of a lone Angus pulling down some massive power, so to speak.   “That’s literally ‘Bad To The Bone’ and ‘In My Time Of Dying’…”   While self-produced by the band and containing a much rawer production and drier mix than the ultra-produced Mutt Lange masterpieces which came before it, FLICK OF THE SWITCH is a back-to-basics approach showing the band embracing more of their earlier blues based sound while still remaining faithful to the signature, high-energy, up-tempo jams which have become their calling card. It’s loud, straight ahead, and powerful, and while perhaps not as uber popular as the 3 albums that preceded it, FLICK is still very much an important album in the AC/DC catalog and one that would serve as a “connector” between where they had been and where they were headed.   “We could have a rated R show…it doesn’t have to be X…”   We’re finally back on track after getting derailed by the weather. “Is it metal? Or is it NOT metal?”   As metalheads, we’ve all heard some variation of this argument at least once in our lives, and the further down the rabbit hole we go, the more we truly reflect on what makes something obviously metal or obviously NOT metal.    “Fish teeth is metal as fuck…”   What’s the lyrical content like? The darker the subject matter, the more metal it is. Lyrics about love and happiness might be considered less metal than lyrics about drugs and wizards, or other more doom and gloom topics.   “If it was distorted as fuck, then it would be metal. But it’s not, so it’s rock and roll…”   How about production? How does it sound? Is it distorted and heavy? Is it really fast or extremely aggressive? More distortion and more speed in the sound equals more metal.    “He’s getting high with a wizard, dude…that’s pretty metal…”   Many of us who grew up with the likes of Ozzy, Dio, and Motley Crue in the early 80’s could easily tell when the boundaries started to shift between rock and metal. And of course, those are the easiest artists to reference as they each capture the majority of the traits that inherently make them metal artists: intensity and attitude, darkness and speed, distortion and heaviness.   “When I think of metal, I think of…Metal Church…”   There are some instances where it’s obvious whether or not something is metal (or not), and there are some where it’s not quite as cut and dry. “I wonder if we’ll get a cease and desist on this episode…”   Generally speaking, whenever someone says “Slayer” or “Metallica”, you think of two veteran thrash bands which both formed in 1981 and both released their debut albums in 1983. This is common knowledge among most fans of both of these bands.    Ironically, there’s another band who follows this exact same timeline of forming in 1981 and releasing their debut album in 1983, yet at the time, they were NOT at all thrashy…not even close.    Most of us know of PANTERA as the brutally heavy, groove metal masters from Arlington, Texas who lit a proverbial fire under the ass of the thrash and heavy music scene in 1990 with their “major label” debut album (with the emphasis, in this case, on the words “major label”) as CFH was actually their FIFTH studio album.    Fifth? Wait a minute…what about THE FIRST FOUR studio albums!? And why are those albums not talked about and celebrated just like all things PANTERA!?    Well, there’s a reason that THE FIRST FOUR aren’t really talked about or acknowledged. Actually, there are probably a multitude of reasons, but the most glaring one is the stylistic difference between their early glam and power metal days and the heavier, grittier era when they truly became the “Cowboys From Hell”.    Remember those awkward Olan Mills pictures you used to take with the family, or better yet, the pictures of you in high school with that absurd, dorky hairstyle that people always like to bring up in conversation? That’s kinda what THE FIRST FOUR ALBUMS by PANTERA were like.   Always remember that “Dokken is better than KISS” and you absolutely have to “pill up before PT”. “There were 2 years of my life that I was dead certain I was gonna be a breakdancer…”   The release of THE ULTIMATE SIN on January 24, 1986, the 4th studio album from OZZY OSBOURNE (and the 2nd & final album to feature Jake E. Lee on guitar) is definitely one of the heaviest albums of Ozzy’s 80’s output.    “I’ve got the magic!”   With heavier riffs, crazier guitar pyrotechnics, and darker lyrical themes like nuclear annihilation, THE ULTIMATE SIN blends in just the right amount of glam while still maintaining the essential heaviness that is a prerequisite for any classic OZZY album. While perhaps a bit “more Blizzard than Diary”, it’s a dramatic improvement from Bark At The Moon and is overall heavier and more focused.   “Oh yeah, the ‘dunniguhh’? “Those guys are parents to 2 babies…and we’re fighting over which baby is cuter…”   With SIDE 2 of our PUPPETS VS JUSTICE HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH, things are a bit trickier, because the math doesn’t sync up perfectly track for track. But not to worry, because we worked out all the math to try and keep things as “Even Steven” as possible.   “You go to the peak of your ability…that’s what Justice was…it was their Hemispheres…”   As we noted previously on the SIDE 1 episode, PUPPETS represents the end of the Cliff Burton era, and JUSTICE represents the beginning of the Jason Newsted era. On SIDE 2, we got deeper into the weeds, particularly with regard to the lyrical subject matter, the style and structure of the songs, and the personal impact and perspective of the instrumentals. “Y’all don’t have to make everything about everything…”   Time has a strange way of playing with the mind and blurring perceptions. For example, 24 years is effectively a quarter of a century, and while that sounds like a pretty vast swath of time, in reality it is merely a tiny speck in the grand scheme of the endless universe. To put it another way, as of the date of this episode in 2025, it has been the same amount of time (24 years) since 2001, which included the launch of Wikipedia, the September 11th attacks, and the very first iPod by Apple.   In keeping with the relativity of time, NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH was released way back in 1994, a whopping 24 years after the groundbreaking eponymous debut from Birmingham’s founding fathers of metal. “I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…”   Ahhh, the 80’s. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin’ frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we’re talking about the 80’s here…)   “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…”   Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening.   Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer.  One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”).    Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne’s 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80’s, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists.    If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over.   Happy Halloween everyone!!! “That dude is Dracula, man…”   The entire month of October is Halloween. “I didn’t do stink finger until sophomore year…”   Switzerland is known for a few things with holes in them, most notably their cheese (and quite possibly their chocolate).
