In this installment of The Parrott Unbound, experience a scene from Portsmouth Public Library’s Shakespearean Bootcamp program, which took place in February. We’re dropping you right in the middle of the action with a reading from Act 5, Scene 1 of Hamlet. This scene and accompanying analysis is the culmination of a month-long intensive workshop that gave players a chance to perform dramatic readings from Hamlet and to learn more about the material and Shakespeare’s influences.  This program was made possible by direction from Katrina Feraco, whom you’ll hear on this recording, as well as library assistant Tori Simpson-Tucker, who presented on Shakespeare and the history behind Hamlet.  The full text of the play, film adaptations, and more are available on Hoopla, one of the library’s digital services.  Katrina Feraco has a background in music and education, with past experience directing theatrical productions. She has performed in Shakespearean products, including, most recently, As You Like It as Lord Amiens, and Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, performed in tandem with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. 

On February 15, author, funeral reform advocate, and speaker Lee Webster brought her insights into planning natural, affordable, and meaningful funerals to the library. Topics explored during the talk include: legal rights and responsibilities, problems with cremation, and green alternatives that are not green at all.  Portsmouth Public Library, New Hampshire Funeral Resources, Education & Advocacy, the Hospice Help Foundation, and Seacoast Permaculture cosponsored this presentation.  Lee Webster is the director of New Hampshire Funeral Resources, Education & Advocacy, emeritus President of the National Home Funeral Alliance, and emeritus Board of Directors and educational consultant and development for the Green Burial Council. 

This summer, Piper Bartlett-Browne, a science teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, traveled to the Arctic to conduct long-term climate change research aboard the U.S. Coast Guard vessel Healy. Piper’s research was part of the PolarTREC Program, a National Science Foundation funded program which invites just 12 teachers each year from the United States to partner with polar scientists and go on 3-6 week expeditions in the Arctic or Antarctic. On October 16, Piper came to the library to share highlights from her PolarTREC experience, along with some thoughts on how the research applies to her teaching and the Seacoast community. On August 7, Professors Nicole Gugliucci  (Physics) and Joshua Tepley (Philosophy) of Saint Anselm College led a discussion on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. How likely is the existence of alien sentience? How profound would it be to discover the existence of aliens? Would it fundamentally change human culture? Or would life go on more or less the same as it was before the discovery?

Melissa Saggerer worked on Star Island for eight summers. She was curator of Star Island’s Vaughn Cottage library, museum and archives for five of those years. She has served as a White Island Lighthouse steward and set foot on all nine Isles of Shoals. Melissa has degrees in Anthropology and Library Science. She’s spoken on many historical topics at the islands as well as at the Seacoast Science Center and the Portsmouth Athenaeum. Susan Stibler is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Certified International Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT), a nationally Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500), and a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP), holding a Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of New Hampshire, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education with a minor in dance. She is also a certified Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist (California College of Ayurveda), a Wise Earth Ayurveda instructor, an iRest Yoga Nidra level II teacher, an Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) practitioner, an Attunement practitioner, and a certified Qi-Gong instructor.

John J. Eddy is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer living with his wife of 50 years, Armonía, originally from Spain, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  They have four children, born in Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia, and Barbados, and five grandchildren. Eddy was Consul General in Bombay, India; Consul General in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; Deputy Chief of Mission, Bridgetown, Barbados; Director, Office of Regional Economic Policy, Latin America and the Caribbean; Senior Advisor, Political and Security Affairs, U.S. Mission to the United Nations; and Senior Special Assistant, Director General of the Foreign Service. His book, FUNNY IN PARTS: The Diary of a Foreign Service Officer (Author House, 2011), showed how U.S. foreign policy is often first gestated among Foreign Service officers abroad. The book recounts amusing, sometimes harrowing stories of Foreign Service families in exotic locales.
