After bringing the Apple Cup back to Seattle, the Washington Huskies prepare to hose the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Montlake this Saturday. Prior to this weekend's momentous tilt, Jack McCauley and Luke Mounger sync up to break it all down. The former interns begin by taking a look at Washington's 59-24 win over Washington State in Pullman last weekend. Both assign letter grades to the overall performance, share what they believe went well and discuss some areas for improvement. Afterwards, the duo share a couple of storylines each they are looking forward to seeing play out on Saturday at 12:30 PM local time at Husky Stadium. It was also the first road win of the Jedd Fisch era on Montlake and the first road win for Washington since their 2023 win in Corvallis over Oregon State. The 117th Apple Cup looms large as the Washington Huskies head across the state to take on the Washington State Cougars. Jedd Fisch's undefeated Huskies were able to enjoy a bye week while the Cougs suffered their first loss of the season in Denton against the North Texas Mean Green. Even so, Jimmy Rogers won't have a hard time getting the most out of his WSU team who will be desperate to retain the Apple Cup Trophy for another year.  After a week off of their own, Jack and Luke are back at it with the Mac and Mounger show. The two former (current?) interns grade Washington's 70-10 smack down of UC Davis. Afterwards, they share their top stories to watch in this weekend's showdown. A couple highlights include a quarterback competition in Pullman and a budding Heisman campaign for Jonah Coleman. After some scheduling talk and the normal complaints from west coasters about late night starts and Scott's master plan for how conference realignment will all shake out within a decade (he promises this will definitely all happen), Kim gets Chris's and Scott's take on some things that came out of the UC Davis win since he wasn't able to make it due to car troubles. Talk moved to the improvement of the offensive line, including the things that have helped this year's line settle in a lot quicker compared to last season, as well as how Jedd Fisch's high school recruiting philosophy has already started to pay off, especially along the OL. After a quick break Kim asks Scott to talk about John Mills and his recruitment to Washington. Scott happened to be at UW the day Mills was offered a scholarship by the previous staff, and he lays out Mills' recruitment from when he originally committed to Texas, to Washington keeping on him due to his Montlake family ties, to his eventual flip to the Huskies. Kim asks Chris whether or not Washington's first BYE week comes at a good time. Believe it or not, they had differing opinions on this topic. And then Scott gives a recruiting update that eventually wound its way toward the 2027 recruiting class and whether or not he's surprised the Huskies don't have any public commitments for that class so far. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week with former Seattle Times writer Bud Withers on the release of his book called 'Too Good to be Through', chronicling the Apple Cup series between Washington and Washington State. And with the Apple Cup coming up in just over a week, the conversation was a timely one. To start the podcast, Kim asks the foundational question; why? Why did Bud decide to write about the history of the Apple Cup? Bud talked about the reasoning, as well as the genesis for the idea. In fact the book goes back to when the rivalry wasn't even known as the Apple Cup. And piecing together basic questions like, who scored the first-ever touchdown for Washington in the rivalry, wasn't easy at all. Bud goes in-depth into the research behind the book, including long days pouring over ancient microfiche in the Suzzallo Library. Bud also talks about how the rivalry naturally split the state up into different camps, but how it also became pretty heated almost right from when they started playing each other. Kim also asked about some of Bud's favorite characters on both teams that he uncovered and/or spoke to during the writing of the book. The Washington Huskies decimated UC Davis 70-10, and the guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - broke down all the positives they saw. And there were a lot of them. To start, the Huskies got off to a hot start, scoring the five times they had the ball in the first half, amassing a 42-10 halftime edge. They were also able to get a pick from Tacario Davis and should have had another one from their other 6-4 corner, Ephesians Prysock. But there were still some sloppy penalties and execution issues that kept the Huskies from shutting down the Aggies completely. Chris and Scott talked about their favorite players of the game, starting with Jonah Coleman and his four first-half touchdowns (five overall!), as well as how rock-solid Demond Williams was with his decision-making all night long. Then they turned to the defense to talk about their difference-makers. They also went through all the true freshmen that have played so far this season. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - stayed up way past their bedtimes to make sure they got their thoughts recorded after Washington's 38-21 win over the Colorado State Rams in the Huskies' season-opener Saturday night at Husky Stadium. The win, the first ever for quarterback Demond Williams Jr. as a starter, was also Washington's 21st-straight home win, a record they hope to build on next weekend against UC Davis. To start the show, the guys naturally gravitated toward the offensive side of the ball. It was there where Washington truly shined, going for 509 total yards, including 283 yards on the ground. That would have been the most yards on the ground last season too. Jonah Coleman almost broke his career mark as he ran 24 times for 177 yards and two scores. Williams added 68 yards on his own. The guys talked about the ability of the Huskies to be able to run, starting with that revamped offensive line, one that included a start from true freshman left guard John Mills. They also talked about Williams' winning performance. The sophomore signal caller was 18-24 for 226 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. After a quick break the talk turned the defense, a group that struggled out of the gate to contain CSU QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and RB Jalen Dupree. But by the second half the Huskies' new look scheme and first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Walters had things dialed in, allowing only 105 total second-half yards, including minus-6 yards on the ground. There were a few standouts, including the play of the game by Makell Esteen, the stellar overall play of NAU transfer safety Alex McLaughlin, and Chris and Scott's defensive player of the game, Jacob Lane. The junior EDGE finished with five tackles, including two tackles for loss, and was the one guy in the first half that really seemed to taste some success while others along the front struggled a bit. The first of which is Bets to Bark. Normally, Jack and Luke will pick one player from each side of the ball that they expect to stand out for the upcoming game. With no game scheduled for this weekend, they each select a player they expect to have a breakout type season on offense and defense. Jack and Luke were on a similar wave length for their selected defensive standouts; however, their choices on offense inspired some debate over a position group with a wealth of options that is in need of someone to separate themselves from the pack.  Next, they kick off their "Betting B1G" portion. Normally, each former intern will pick three of their favorite bets across B1G play for the week; however, with this being Week 0, they instead make three Win Total plays for the year. Jack and Luke will be tracking their Betting B1G performance throughout the year. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund - were at Washington's 13th fall practice early Friday morning, held inside the Dempsey due to rainy skies. With Jedd Fisch and the UW coaches now firmly in 'game week' mode, the practice was more of a one where the Huskies did their work in shoulder pads and shorts, working on cleaning things up and installing more things UW fans can expect to see Saturday night during their second 'mock game' of fall camp. They talked about what they saw on both sides of the line of scrimmage, but three main storylines on offense caught a lot of their attention. The first was the return of Denzel Boston was a focal point, as was the return of another receiver, Dezmen Roebuck, who missed Thursday's practice. The second storyline; how much will Roebuck play this year? Is he a certainly to burn his redshirt? And the other storyline that has certainly developed over the course of fall is the battle at left guard between Paki Finau and John Mills. The redshirt frosh had the job at the end of spring, but the true freshman Mills has continued to just get better and better by the practice to where it's now basically a dead heat between the two. The battle has been at a point now where the coaches alternate series between Finau and Mills with the first team. And an additional subplot; who makes up the full 8-man rotation? The guys feel good about the first six (the four constant starters plus Finau/Mills) but who are shoe-ins for those other two slots? All the competition is simply showing the Huskies are in a great spot heading into Saturday's mock game, even if today's practice was the 13th.
