In 1902, Notre Dame entered a showdown with Michigan as a massive underdog against the most dominant team in college football. On a field buried in mud, captain Lou Salmon delivered a remarkable two-way performance that helped turn a 23-0 loss into what Notre Dame called a “glorious defeat.” Before Rockne, the Gipper, and the Four Horsemen, there was Red Salmon, one of the men who helped show what Notre Dame football could become.
