Description
Self Portraits as Other People is a hyper-creative, psycho-active variety show wherein multidimensional artist, filmmaker, author, voice-actor, and wordsmyth The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo engages his guests in social storytelling to mindfully and artfully investigate where the limits of language meet the fringes of Reality. Praise The Lore!
The show intrepidly treads the terrain of the trickster, constantly defying, redefining, and refining itself. Each episode is its own schizovereign entity, but there are themes that are built upon from pod to pod--themes like Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind, Divination, Folklore, Daemonic reality, Magic, Language, Psychedelics, Creativity, Dreams, Art, Poetry, Cinema, Ecology, literature, Animism, Precognition, Shamanism, and so on. Each episode is preceded by an intricately sound-scaped introduction that offers the invisible listener a lens through which to view the conversation that is to follow, along with otherwise cosmic, comedic, and contemplative content.
The shownotes offer hyperlinked rabbitholes that will allow you to dig deeper into wonderlands touched upon on air. Occasionally a solo pod is bath-bombed into the stream to showcase stand-alone story fragments that have escaped from the dark archives of never before released materials, or from the vaults of "Patreon-only".
Right from the start, SPAOP wasted no time jumping off the deep end into the highlands, linguistically levitating somewhere between the fatherland and the mothership, where laughing angels drink from the crying well and the cosmic giggle reflects its cracked smile on the surface of the shattered mirror-pool. If you're new here, and are wondering where to start, you are invited to listen in any order. Start at the last episode for the most cutting edge, newest now, and track back from there to witness the devolution, or start at the beginning and work your way up to the present, or pick a pod with a title & description that piques your curiosity. The choice is yours. We'd love to hear from you, so don't hesitate to reach out, and/or leave a review.

I am joined by my dear friends & creative co-conspirators Sean & Cass of Very Ape Pod, the infinitely quotable documentary filmmakers responsible for fringe America classics such as American Juggalo, Florida Man, Oxyanna, Wild Magic, & many more.
We explore what their lifestyle brand, the Church of Chill, is all about & how it came to be. We talk world-building, lore-smithing, community-cultivating, wild-tended spirituality, health & sacraments, & about how grief can fertilize life’s soil so that we may live life more fully in honor of the dearly departed.
All this may sound heavy, but it’s ultimately in service of having a more “fun & funny time,” to better “ride the wild” “through the static and distance” so that your relationShip can continue its “smooth sailing.” But we’ll have to “settle for perfection,” I guess.
In the Aftermyth we delve deeper into the memefied maxims of the Church of Chill, Sean’s outlaw ancestry, formative familial influences & more!

When a hawk is found dead high in a tree, ensnared by a kite-string and dangling like the Hanged Man of the tarot, a newly ordained minister is confronted with big questions about the nature of the soul. An encounter with the hawk's widow reveals the bird to be both a powerful symbol and a once-living being. Struck by her grief — raw and unsentimental, unlike human mourning — he begins to ask what makes us, as humans, believe ourselves more worthy than other animals. And whether he might hold space, and offer humanity, to grant the animal’s spirit its own place in eternity.
All music by me, except the subtle electronic soundtrack underlying my moment of doubt, which features a sample by Jeff Cravath. Oh, and Fairy did some plucking on the Sansula and back-up crooning during that first, channeled snippet of Don’t Leave Him Hangin’.

When we think of occult, shamanic, or mystical beings, we tend to think in terms of spiritual abstraction, dissociated from the material world. But the occult simply means the hidden — the invisible world, whose effects on our fortune and health are real, even when the origins of their symptoms can't be detected with the naked eye. Long before the microscope, our ancestors were in relationship with that world: through ritual, altered states, the superstitions they hold, and the stories they told.
In this conversation, two poet-philosophers compare notes on how the imagination mediates between microbiological cultures and human culture — how the interface of myth, folklore, and story lend form to a realm that is invisible, but physical.
From fermentation to mythic mentation, this invisible world is not merely psychic or material in nature—it is meta-real.
