One man stands perfectly still upon the stage, filling the theatre with a sense of the profound, the past, the deeply sacred. There is no banter, no breaking the ambiance of ceremonial space alongside brother and sisters band members, all still and sombre as ancient stones. From them, something pure - the songs of the world - pours out. He creates music with the atmosphere, bones and birch groves and rivers. He plays traditional instruments that are the same our ancestors called up the Gods with. After twenty years of playing, Einar Selvik's compositions, along with his band, Wardruna, have finally and justly found world-wide acclaim, which he seems not terribly interested in, because his purpose is creating something raw, old and true, so we can remember who we are. Once upon a time, when we could all travel the magickal lands of the world, many a pointy-hatted pilgrim would wind their way to a sacred site right in the middle of the Royal Arcade in Melbourne…Spellbox. A Witches home-away-from-home, Spellbox was a magickal store that is all red velvet curtains, beautiful besoms adorning colourful walls, exotic scents, lovely sounds, and essential ingredients for spllecasters spilling off the deep antique bookshelves. Blessed Witchmas, pagan people! Welcome to the final episode of the Witchcast for 2021 - though there may be a couple of surprise specials popping up over the break! For this episode, Lucy dives into the pagan origins of Christmas, from Krampus to Mithras and very unseemly medieval revelry. Then it’s all about the occult symbology of The Green Knight, a new(ish) film by David Lowery that some are calling a masterpiece. The film centres in many ways around the tension between Christianity and paganism - and it’s set at Christmas! It’s a rich, dream-like meditation of a film, packed with magickal symbols and Lucy breaks it all down - including on how the pentacle represents five sets of soooo many witchy and knightly values.
