Medications address symptoms, but not their underlying cause. For most people, the word “psychiatrist” conjures up a doctor who prescribes medications for a biochemical mental disorder. The American College of Orgonomy (ACO) trains psychiatrists in medical orgone therapy, a unique approach that focuses on helping you achieve the best way to function not dependent on medication but by looking more deeply into what sets off your anxieties, fears and negative thinking.
Healthy expression is essential for satisfaction in life. Medical orgone therapists are trained to be keen observers of how people express themselves both verbally and with body language. They can help you become aware of and understand the consistent, automatic ways you handle your emotions—your individual character—and how that impacts your life. They also work with you to identify and express healthy aspects of your nature that can help you overcome your problems.
An awareness of the connection between mind and body forms a foundation for the therapeutic approach taught at the ACO. It addresses the underlying emotional reasons why some people are stiff-necked, tight-lipped, tight-assed, scatter-brained and a host of other ways that emotions are held and processed in the body. You may act out of rage or sadness and not even be aware that those feelings fuel your actions. To handle your emotions more constructively, this therapy improves your capacity for better contact with yourself.

This episode features the audio from one of our ACO case presentation series webinars, “A Sexually Confused Young Man.” In this episode, Edward Chastka, M.D. tells Dr. Burritt about Bill, a 19-year-old young man who came to him after being discharged from a psychiatric facility where he’d been hospitalized briefly after developing an acute psychosis. His psychotic episode appeared to have been triggered by the increased use of alcohol, cannabis and occasionally, amphetamines.
As Bill emerged from his psychosis, he revealed a history of confusion and fears about his sexuality. Initially, Dr. Chastka’s therapy focused on resolving Bill’s confused and psychotic thinking and then was directed toward helping him discern the relationship between his sexual fears and his paranoid and delusional thinking. Listen in to hear how Dr. Chastka helped Bill understand his sexual feelings and realize what kind of intimate relationship was best for him.

This episode features the audio from one of the ACO case presentation series webinars. Salvatore Iacobello, M.D., tells Dr. Burritt about his six-year-old patient Kayla, who had episodes of anger as well as severe temper tantrums mostly at home, while she was well behaved at school. Her parents sought treatment with Dr. Iacobello because they were unable to effectively deal with this out-of-control child.
Dr. Iacobello utilized play in Kayla's therapy, providing her with an outlet for emotional expression. Using play also gave the child the opportunity to have the emotional contact she very much needed. Find out how Dr. Iacobello’s methods resulted in a marked reduction of anger episodes and temper tantrums, as well as a significant and positive change in Kayla's functioning.

With the social and political divide that intensified in the U.S. after the 2016 election, doctors Peter A. Crist and Edward Chastka, two ACO psychiatrists, started a sociopolitical discussion group in February of 2017. They wanted to give people an opportunity to look at varying social and political views in our country and in the world using principles from their therapy practices that would allow participants to discuss opposing views with an open mind and get to the heart of the problem. The two doctors taught the group basic principles about how people think and express themselves, so that participants were then able to apply those precepts to working with others in the group, in other social and political situations, and in their personal lives. Listen in to hear an interview with the doctors about the group and their experience.
