The podcasts will cover a range of issues around businesses becoming employee owned. We hear from businesses that have become employee owned and from businesses that are in the process of transitioning to employee ownership.

We will also hear from professional advisors who specialise in employee ownership.

These podcasts are intended to be a useful resource for business owners who are considering their succession planning and how they will exit their business.

In this first episode, Dennis Overton, founder of Alness-based aquaculture firm Aquascot, provides an introduction to Employee Ownership and industry leadership group Scotland for Employee Ownership. He also offers insight into how and why Aquascot  became employee-owned and what the impact has been on the business.
In this episode, Simon Poole from Jerba Campervans, an official Volkswagen registered vehicle body builder for the VW T6 Transporter,  explains the decision behind the transition to employee ownership and the other options he explored.  He goes on to talk about the aspects that worried him and how these worries were dispelled.  He provides good insight into the process and at which point they decided to involve the employees.  He then explains how the Employee Ownership Trust was set up and talks openly about some of the challenges along the way. He then discusses the finance aspect of an employee ownership transaction and the potential tax advantages for both the seller and the employees.  Finally, he talks about the cost of the transition process, the corporate governance structure and the important topic of retaining the company culture during and after the process.
In this episode, Karen Pickering from architectural practice, Page/Park explains how they moved from a partnership structure to an employee ownership structure. Karen outlines how they involved employees by setting up a 'Transition Group' and describes the culture change amongst employees since becoming employee owned.  She also explains how the shares are now owned and touches on what they would do differently if they were to go through the process again.  Finally, Karen gives her thoughts on why other business should look at the employee ownership model.
In this episode, father and son team, Stuart and Kenny Hutton talk about the rich history of the Priory Hotel in Beauly.  Stuart talks about the exit options considered for the long-established family business and how that journey took him close to a trade sale just before they became aware of employee ownership.  They decided that because of the strong ties with the local community, employee ownership was the perfect option. It is an enlightening insight into how the staff have responded to the transition to employee ownership and how Kenny still plays an important part in the business whilst his father has been able to exit the business.
This episode features Campbell Clark from Blackadders, a firm of solicitors with offices throughout Scotland that offer specialist services for businesses looking at employee ownership.  Campbell begins by outlining why there has been increased interest in employee ownership and what other options are available to business owners seeking to exit their business.  He then explains what's involved in an employee ownership deal and defines an Employee Ownership Trust. This episode features an interview with Niall MacDonald from Aquascot, an award-winning seafood business based in the Scottish Highlands.  Niall begins by outlining the owners decision to transition into employee ownership to ensure business longevity.  Having taken the decision, Niall then talks through the various steps in the process and the structure of the trust that was put in place at Aquascot.  He covers the mechanisms that were put in place to involve and engage with the employees and the formula that is in place to calculate tax free bonuses.
