My fellow Nerds, a crisis is upon us. As some of you may have heard, a recent high court ruling in the UK has greatly jeopardized the future of the Chiptunes movement. The hardware integral to creating music from current and retro gaming systems is now illegal. This aggression will not stand, man – and we won’t sit by idly while our bothers and sister across the pond cannot pick up their Gameboys and bleep bloop in public. …Did that come out wrong? NEVERMIND.In response to this ruling, Nerdy Show has created Fight the Power, an organization and movement dedicated to fighting for the rights of nerd musicians and the right to make nerd music of all kinds. Read the Fight the Power Manifesto, join the Facebook Page and find out what you can do to join in the fight. In this episode we elaborate on the plight in the UK and talk with British chiptune musician, Pixelh8 about his feelings on the ruling, what he’s doing to turn the tide, his upcoming projects, and how BBC America butchers British television. We’re also joined by chiptune beatsmith: DJ RoboRob, calling all the way from Iraq, and yo-yo master and chiptunes rapper: Doctor Popular. All that plus a surplus of cool video game news, Mike gets weirdly (and disturbingly) political, and crackpot Russian conspiracy theories – oh boy! Hosted on Acast. In this week’s action packed episode of Nerdy Show, we have a very science-heavy theme, surrounding SPACE!! IRONY!!!* We have our good pal Pixelh8 coming back on the show to discuss his upcoming performance this weekend where he will be performing at the British Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University for the Science Fair. His performance relies heavily on the barely noticeable sounds of the machinery used to observe the barely noticeable sounds of space. That’s right, we have a Nerdy Show Exclusive for this episode!! We also discuss our extra early viewing of the movie Kick-Ass and our thoughts (SPOILER: WE ENJOYED IT!!)Some big news that hex almost forgot to mention is that his baby, Nerdapalooza, was nominated for the First Annual GeekDad Awards! Now, we wouldn’t dare demand you to vote. But Brian would. VOTE FOR NERDAPALOOZA HERE!!!*(btw, the irony is that space surrounds us…) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Celebrating the chiptunes genre/movement (whichever you prefer to call it), the Nerdy Show team invites British chiptunes maestro, Pixelh8, on the show to give us his take on it. We also have the amazing return of the incomparable Brian Clevinger! We missed him so much!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's with a heavy heart that we report that Space Ghost is no longer getting enough oxygen. On March 2nd, George Lowe, voice of Space Ghost, and all-around delightful weirdo, became a true ghost. He joins C. Martin Croker, voice of Zorak and Moltar in Valhalla. We never did any podcasts with either of them, but back in 2014 we recorded an episode of Nerdy Show Live with George Lowe where we read some Space Ghost Coast to Coast fanfic. George Lowe reads as Space Ghost, Cat as Zorak, Hex and Moltar, Doug as the announcer, and Jonna as Lou Ferrigno. "But wait", you might say to yourself, "I've never seen/ heard any such show!" Right you are. Nerdy Show Live was our short-lived experiment in doing panel show-style video programs in front of a live audience. This particular Nerdy Show Live was delightful in-person, but disastrous insofar as recording - as you'll hear. Long story short: we weren't in control of our audio engineering and what we ended up with is an unusable mess. However, in memory of George Lowe and C. Martin Croker, we've done what we can to salvage the best bit of that hot mess in a somewhat-listenable form.Listenable enough, perhaps, that hopefully you can have a laugh and think on the gloriously surreal late nights with Tad, Zorak, Moltar, Brak, and the rest of the gang. Pixelh8's Hard Reset

Nerdy Show doesn’t have a monopoly on going dormant for years at a time - why, twelve years ago, legendary chiptunes artist, Pixelh8, stepped away from music. He turned from pioneering musician to pioneering educator and founded The Creative Computing Club. But no sonic wizard stays entombed forever! Pixelh8 is back! His new record, Hard Reset, is out now, further new projects await, and we've dusted off Nerdy Show to give this old pal a warm welcome home.In this episode Cat and Jess travel with PixelH8 trough his new album, track by track, and learn crazy tales like how his first acting gig, on the set of a Tollywood movie, led to him programming a song on decommissioned missile hardware. We'll also discuss the how’s and whys of his departure from music and everything that happened in between, the various eras of chiptune music, his work reclaiming computer chips from dying consoles to build new instruments, spending six hours to make an anime sound on the NES, and much more.LINKS:Listen to the companion PixelH8 episode on "MOTHER," She WroteListen to Pixelh8's Hard ResetPixelh8 on TikTok | Instagram | PatreonPixelh8's BandcampHard Reset on CD (UK only)The Creative Computing Club Hosted on Acast. In this archival interview from 2018, Cat speaks with Talking Heads' David Byrne about the Criterion Collection re-release of his 1986 film, True Stories and the first ever edition of that film's complete soundtrack. The film was Byrne's directorial debut and as it plainly puts it right at the start is "about a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas."The film is part zany, slice of life comedy, part anthropological study - processed through the music of Talking Heads and projected through a loving, art house lens. Cat and Byrne discuss how this remarkable portrait of 80s America came together and other unexpected art.For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2020/09/nerdy-show-david-byrne-shares-true-stories-from-true-stories Hosted on Acast. We're going to PodTales a festival of audio drama and audio fiction. It's free, it's in Cambridge, MA, and it's on October 20th. More info here: https://podtales.org/ We've got a table (A5/6 in the Mt. Absalom room) and several panels including this one at 2PM: "Living in the Moment: Writing Through Improvisation" in The Hephaestus (Second Floor). Hosted by Cap and featuring Hem "Volonda" Cleveland (The Lucky Die, Dark Dice) Natasha Haverty & Brendan Pelsue (We Are Not These People), Sean Howard (Civilized, Alba Salix: Royal Physician, The End of Time and Other Bothers). The first storytellers didn't sit around plotting – they lived in the moment and collaborated with others to tell taller tales! Our panel shares the secrets of wielding spontaneity and collaboration as tools for creating unprecedented drama, laughs, and realism in your stories - as well as how to craft recording environments to enhance and manipulate your cast's performances, how to plot without a script, and how to elevate improvised material to audio excellence with scripted revisions and cinematic production. Get Off My Books

Get Off My Books

Presently the production house known as Nerdy Show is in the midst of some massive movements. After the release of The Call of Cthulhu Mystery Program series 2, Cap and Doug dove right into a new major project for Lightning Dogs (still TBA) - so, after a long day of recording stuff they can't talk about quite yet, and no time to assemble a proper episode of Nerdy Show, they grabbed a friend and piled into the studio for a free-wheeling conversation to catch you up on things and hopefully entertain and delight.Who is this mystery friend? Cap and Doug are joined by Eleanor Edwards, co-host of Consequence Podcast Network's The Fifth Dimension: A Twilight Zone Podcast, and Cap's partner of 16 years who's been behind-the-scenes this entire time, but hasn't truly graced us with her presence until now. Crazy! We discuss the new Twilight Zone, RoboCop, JFK erotica, and a host of other strange media and critical diversions into the life and times of the Nerdy Show crew. For links and more info, head to the main episode page: https://nerdyshow.com/2019/04/nerdy-show-get-off-my-books/ Hosted on Acast. There's no episode of Nerdy Show this week because we put our our long awaited Dungeons & Doritos Q&A 2 - which you can find over on that show's feed. Cap discusses this and shares a few other tidbits of network news. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Pitching in the Wind

Pitching in the Wind

2019-02-0641:55

The wildly-swinging hits keep on coming! How far will we veer off of our usual platter of geeky chatter? And for how long? Indefinitely?! Well at the very least we'll always stay true to what you've come to expect from us for the past decade: surreal tangents and strange comedy. In this episode - Cap, La Valle, and Doug team up for a creative experiment in which Cap plays a high-powered Hollywood executive type taking pitches from hapless writers.Which of these absurd ideas will get green lit for production? Whose hopes and dreams will get eaten alive by the Hollywood monster? How far will these poor saps go to break a tie and "win" this pitch party? For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2019/02/nerdy-show-pitching-in-the-wind/ Hosted on Acast. When the Cap is away, the Doug and La Valle will play. Left to their own devices (without adult supervision), the duo discuss some of their favorite Nerdy Show pitches and come up with new ones. But things take a spooky turn when a discussion about favorite horror movies leads to an exploration of La Valle’s dark, supernatural past. Hosted on Acast. Join Cap on a solo mission as they give hints to the latest happenings at The Nerdy Show Network, muse on the Network's (and this show's) 10th year of podcasting, share the ups and downs of kitten fostering, and highlight two amazing comics you should read: Gillen and Hans's Die and Okorafor and Tana's LaGuardia. But all that's just a prelude to the main event! In preparation for an upcoming collaborative art project, Cap dusts off some fan fiction they wrote with Local-Shop in which their favorite pretentious art ladies of the 90s meet: Judy Funnie (from Nickelodeon/ Disney's Doug) and Maude Lebowski (from The Big Lebowski). Indulge in Cap's all too thorough knowledge of Doug continuity as we explore Judy's undocumented time at Vole University and Maude's continued interest in work that's strongly vaginal. No, this isn't slashfic, but hopefully the artsy fartsy feminist storyry therein won't make you uncomfortable.Vagina.For links and more info, head to the main episode page:https://nerdyshow.com/2019/01/judy-funnie-meets-maude-lebowski/ Hosted on Acast.
