Why are dream-inspired poems so powerful? We speak today with award-winning poet, author of multiple books, and committed activist, the dynamic Joan Gelfand. Joan shares a poem inspired by a dream called Burial, quoted in full below. She speaks about why she thinks that dream-inspired poetry can be so riveting while telling someone your dream can evoke eye-rolling and boredom. She also reads a poem about Ferlinghetti which formed the basis for an award-winning video which can be found here.  Joan also gives specific advice about crafting poetry. In the second half we take three calls. First Kelly Sullivan Walden calls to ask Joan how her dreamlife has been responding to the release of her new book. Joan brings up a dream in which a friend has a business named Contagious Vulnerability. Second we get a call from Adam who shares a dream about elephant which destroys his electrical panel. I offer an alternate idea to what he shared that ChatGPT had suggested about the dream. Finally we take a call from Donna of Capitola who shares that she is an observational poet. She shares a recurring dream about a trying to find a restaurant. You might imagine a mudslide Rushing down steep mountain terrain Your legs buckling. You might imagine a building, Shaken to its core, rubble tumbling Knocking you senseless. You might imagine water, too deep, A collapsed bridge, a tunnel broken. My burial was none of these. An angel chanted And I went under, alone and Unafraid. Today we celebrate the 250th official podcast of the Dream Journal by replaying a popular show which just happens to be with my brand designer Andrusa Lawson of Divine by Design. Urban shamanism and setting sacred space. Dreams, like myths, can be regarded as stories that are not true but that say something true. The essence of setting a sacred space is being intentional and finding a common sense of meaning. We also speak about non-verbal communication in dreamwork and traditional indigenous oral storytelling. Also, the power of urban spirits and dreams of city places. After the break, we take several questions from Max including what specific filters Andrusa uses to keep his dreamtime sacred. We end by speaking about Andrusa’s ideas about karma-less action. BIO: Andrusa Lawson, Vice president and creative director of Divine by Design, is a dream worker exploring the process of committing the innate wisdom of dreaming into communal memory, the ability of stories to cross cultural barriers, and the unique medicine that oral traditions represent for people whose voices have been historically silenced. Do voices in your head guide your waking life? Inner Wisdom Figures and Internal Family Systems. Inner exploration with today’s guest Charles Tack.  Charles describes Internal Family Systems as a way of building relationships with the different voices inside ourselves, many of whom came from the cultural and familial messages that we grew up with. He then describes what he calls Inner Wisdom Figures, which are inner characters who seem to be a few steps of development ahead of where we are in waking life. Charles describes how to engage with both of these kinds of inner voices through what Jung describes as active imagination. Charles also describes how he uses I Ching as part of inner work, and we end with a discussion of how to move toward joy and radiance. BIO: After years of facilitating groups and coaching clients to improve, Charles realized that he was only superficially successful. More importantly, he didn’t enjoy what he advocated for. That began a decades-long inquiry that led to an ever-increasing appreciation for our child-like aspects, greater access to holistic, wisdom influences and more embodied joy.  This show, episode number 249, was recorded during a live broadcast on March 9, 2024 at KSQD.org, community radio of Santa Cruz. What does the #metoo movement have to do with the climate crisis? And how can dreams help both? Today meet Marsha Hudson and Norman Brown. We’ll talk about Love and Power and how better emotional versatility can improve relationships and reduce our impact on the planet… and on each other. Our guests start out by saying that women seek love while men seek power. Reconciling these two drives is the work of relationship. They talk about how a modern lack of empathy is the root of both the #metoo movement and the current climate crisis. Marsha shares a dream in which policemen come to the door telling her how to live her life as an example of how dreams reveal subconscious material that is hindering the relationship. They describe the nine basic emotions and the value of naming them highlighting shame and contempt as well as excitement/interest. A conversation about psychedelics with holistic facilitator Steve Elfrink of Om Terra Psychedelics. How dreams and psychedelics shift consciousness and help resolve trauma. He describes primary consciousness as the body and the subconscious while secondary consciousness is everyday awareness. Primary consciousness is present all the time, but is deeply accessed through dreaming and psychedelics. Steve recommends what he calls a psycholytic dose to help get out of a loop of unresolved emotions, but he cautions that a psychedelic session is just the beginning of a healing journey. In the second half, Steve shares his own riveting journey with psychedelics and Max asks where one can find psychedelic assistance. Dream yoga, dream tarot, and the creative life. How to live and embody the dream as a daily practice which helps with life and with death. Today’s guest is Niki Jaimes, founder of the Rising Wolf Collective. We start by talking about dream yoga as a daily empowerment practice and a kind of self study. She says dreams helped put her in touch with her emotions and bodily sensations and to develop her intuition, She describes a shamanic journey that led her to heal a mysterious shoulder pain. We talk about the paradox that learning to feel safe is the first step in learning to feeling our more unpleasant feelings. We talk about learning to cultivate trust which will help us as we face the ultimate release of death. Niki describes how using Tarot is a way to take your intuition to the gym. We take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who says that he happened to do a tarot reading just that morning, and we explore some of the meanings that came up for him around his longing to find his path in life. Guide your dreams with the power of thought and intention. Explore creativity, healing, sex, grief, and the nature of time and space. Today we talk to Lucid Dreaming expert Dr. Clare Johnson. Clare describes an intense dream which spurred her to write her next book which is currently in the editing phase. She says that dreams, lucid or not, demonstrate that we are in partnership with our own subconscious. She tells of lucid dreams in which she questions the nature of dreams, energy, and even of matter. We then get into a conversation about nightmares: what they are for and some ideas about dealing with them in the dream itself or in the waking state. After the break, we take a call from Holmes from New York who tells about a dream where he is with a pastor but can’t hear what he says. The pastor has a spider on his head which looks right at Holmes and gets bigger and bigger. Clare suggests he go back into the dream if he wants to find out what the pastor said. He also tells us he has many sex dreams which Clare says is sometimes related to spiritual awakening. Homes finishes by telling us how a waking life meditation allowed him to let go of his fear of dream whales. We take a second call from John from Santa Cruz about how he often drifts in and out of dreaming and wakefulness. Clare ends by talking about how raising our quality of awareness can improve the consciousness that we take with us when we die. Go to Clare’s webpage for a 50% discount on her popular 30-Day Power of Dreams class using the code word “dream”. BIO: Dr. Clare Johnson is a global lucidity teacher and a pioneer in the field. How to write your story and transform your Tragic into Magic! Our guest today is the inimitable Kelly Sullivan Walden author of ten books. Kelly starts by saying it’s best to write from a place of passion and describes what authority means to her and what it can mean to you. We talk about the idea of the hero’s journey which starts with a call to adventure then ends with giving to others what we have learned. Along the way we will encounter much resistance and, much like in working with dreams, we need to turn enemies into allies. Kelly suggests a daily writing practice, maybe start with a dream. Kelly goes through the transformative OGLE practice which she explores in her new book, A Crisis Is a Terrible Thing to Waste, and which can be applied to waking life experiences as well as to dreams. We take a call from John from Santa Cruz who share a recurring dream about losing his way and all of his things, and we talk about the book Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Kelly has a writing class which starts January 25 which you can sign up for at KellySullivanWalden.com/get-er-done/ BIO: Kelly Sullivan Walden is the bestselling author of 7 oracle decks and ten books. Her latest is NYC Big Book Award’s A Crisis is a Terrible Thing to Waste (recommended by Shirley MacLaine). Using Voice Dialogue and Body Centered Awareness, our guest, Iudita Harlan, has been helping people get into the flow of their lives for over thirty years. We talk about her experiences and then do a live demonstration. Iudita describes Voice Dialogue as a psycho spiritual consciousness process in which various Selves have a chance to talk to each other using the language of dream. Iudita grew up in communist Romania and her parents were holocaust survivors which led her to seek a process which allows us to embrace our shadows. She quotes her mentor. “For every shadow we embrace in ourselves, one less shadow is projected out into the world.” After the break, we do two live demonstrations. Iudita works first with Katherine about a dream in which she can’t tell is she has to pee or not then with Ray of Santa Cruz about a dream in which a car seems to have a mind of its own. Her next three part workshop called “Right Size Your Inner Critic” starts January 14. Find details at her webpage. BIO: Iudita Harlan is a long time integration specialist in private practice using the Voice Dialogue Psychology of Selves consciousness process created by Drs Hal and Sidra Stone and the Hellerwork Structural Integration process of Joseph Heller. Embracing life’s mysteries. Using shadow exploration, Tai Chi, and dreamwork retired professor Bill Judge is on a personal journey guided by his dreams. Bill describes some highlights of his spiritual journey so far including a trip to Nepal, a sailing trip across the Atlantic, Jungian analysis, and parenting his two adopted children.  Bill shares a dream which he had leading up to the interview he calls Mountain Joy Ride and other dreams including a series he calls the Seduction Series and the Concrete Wave. He recommends a book called Mindful Dreaming by David Gordon. We speak his views about moving from “role to soul”, from the do-it-all phase of life to a more contemplative phase. We also speak about shadow manifests when we overreact in waking life and about how dreams assist in our ego death which dissolves shadow. We take a question by Max about his experience in the men’s movement. Bill recommends the work of Robert Bly and Illuman.org, an organization created by Richard Rohr, and mentions his professional book about leadership called The Leader’s Shadow. We take an email question from Charles about using active imagination with dreams and finish by talking about his current spiritual path which involves Tai Chi and what he calls unlearning. BIO: Bill Judge is a recently retired college professor who is shifting from “role to soul.” This shift has been greatly aided by his dream work. While always a curious adventurer, his current focus is living more in the present moment, exploring his shadow, playing Tai Chi, serving in the men’s movement, and embracing life’s mysteries. Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, “Yes it does!” The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. This is a replay from a popular episode recorded in March. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can’t recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Freud’s famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process. We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge. BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Since 2016 they have undertaken public Ullman dream discussions, with Julia simultaneously painting each dream as part of their DreamsID.com collaboration. The collaboration has resulted in their 2023 book, The Science and Art of Dreaming, published by Routledge.
