Stop Sucking It In!

Stop Sucking It In!

2020-11-1916:41

From the time us gals were in middle school and became aware of and self conscious of our bodies, we have likely been "sucking it in"... our belly that is!  After all, we have lived in a society where thin is in and flat bellies are the ideal.  So it's no wonder we may find ourselves gripping our abdominals inward frequently or all the time for some. In this episode, I'm going to share exactly why why we don't want this to be a regular habit (our bodies don't do so well with this) and how we can have the appearance of a flatter belly without the constant belly gripping!  Listen into this quick episode with me and let's STOP SUCKING IT IN!
When up to 50% of all women will experience this issues to some extent, pelvic organ prolapse should be something that we all know about and frequently talk about with our girlfriends and mothers... but we DON'T!   This podcast is all about explaining what a POP (pelvic organ prolapse) is and how can we holistically treat it and what does a pelvic PT do to help?

When it comes to caring for ourselves during pregnancy, we have many choices of who we can have on our healthcare team.  Though a midwife or OBGYN may be to only provider we select, others have found that utilizing the care of a chiropractor to be well worth their time and help them get through their pregnancy with much less pain and feeling better cared for overall. No one will argue that our spines and entire bodies go through a whole lot of changes in this pregnancy journey! Join me as I get the low down from Dr Nicole on just what does a chiropractor do to help us while pregnant and beyond, how to find a professional who has extra training in prenatal clients, and how they can be a part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team before and after baby comes!
Ever known anyone that fell on their tailbone?  Or anyone that had tailbone pain?  Often, people will go to their primary doctor, chiropractor, or sports med doctor only to find that they are a little uneasy about this issue or they may say they don't know how to or are unable to help. Enter the pelvic PT!  Many of us are trained in being able to assess and treat painful tailbone conditions.  In this podcast, I will share how someone may come to have tailbone pain and what you can do right now if you are experiencing this.  Be sure to see a pelvic PT and verify if they are in fact experienced in caring for this issue.  You'd be surprised at just how quickly this pain can resolve with proper care!

Dilators have been recommended for women suffering with pelvic tightness and pain for many years.  But just the idea of using these to a person with pain sounds scary!  Buffy and Amanda talk through WHO these could help and HOW to properly use them AND the mindset we HAVE to have when using these.  Hint: these shouldn't be causing more pain!If you were told to purchase vaginal dilators by your healthcare provider and you are confused at how they would help, or are totally freaking out about the idea of them?  Then THIS episode is just or you!
With all of the prenatal visits that us women have, isn't it funny how none of them focus on assessing if our body is truly ready for the pushing phase of labor or talk about what we can do to physically prepare? This time, Buffy gets interviewed by Marissa Aron on the topic of being "Birth Ready".  We will go WAY more in depth about how we can prepare our bodies for the big delivery day and beyond.  We will talk about when we should see a pelvic PT during our pregnancy to learn where are body is in terms of readiness for childbirth and recovery, what the BIGGEST focus should be, what to talk to our birth providers about, choosing a doctor vs midwife and how a doula can be an amazing support when delivering in a hospital.  Plus, we also talk about how the work we do to connect to our core and pelvic floor prenatally prepares us for a MUCH easier recovery!
With pelvic health issues being incredibly prevalent for women, many find that the typical gym routine does not complement what our body needs or what it can do at the present time.  Many women stop exercise altogether for fear of making things worse or are in too much pain to "hit the gym" and join in a group exercise class.   In this podcast, I interviewed Joyce Gorman, a health and wellness coach and yoga instructor who specializes in crafting yoga routines specifically to aid in pelvic healing. She talks about her journey to finding yoga, becoming a health coach, and how her personal journey led to her realization that yoga could help many women suffering with pelvic health concerns from pelvic pain to pelvic floor weakness and bladder leaks.
For moms, having a new baby can be overwhelming.  When it comes to milestones, we just hope that our pediatrician can keep a watch on that and all will be good.  But did you know that the real EXPERT in movement milestones and physical changes is a pediatric physical therapist?   I had the pleasure of talking with Dr Aron, a pediatric and women's health physical therapist from Florida who gave me the low down on some common things she helps babies and children with ALL THE TIME.  From delayed or altered crawling to walking, Marissa shares with us how simple it can be to check in with a pediatric physical therapist to both advocate for your child and put your mind at ease.

One of the biggest changes to the delivery options for physical therapy during COVID has been virtua visits or telehealth.  Though it was an option to some before, it became ESSENTIAL after COVID.  Buffy talks to her friend and colleague Dr J Martin about this topic as Dr J has been providing telehealth visits to her clients for years and coaches other PTs in how to add this to their practice as well. Want to know what a virtual PT visit is like?  Does it really work?  Listen and find out!
