Safar With Sadaf Farooqui
The Masnavi, also known as the Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi, is an extensive poem written in Persian by Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi, commonly known as Rumi. It is considered one of the most important works of Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam. The Masnavi is highly regarded by many Muslims and scholars as a significant piece of Islamic literature, second only to the Quran.
Comprising a collection of six books of poetry, the Masnavi contains approximately 25,000 verses or 50,000 lines. The title "Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi" translates to "The Spiritual Couplets," indicating its poetic nature. Rumi utilized this poetic form to convey his spiritual teachings and insights.
The Masnavi draws inspiration from various sources, including the Quran, hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad), and everyday stories and anecdotes. Rumi employs these narratives to illustrate and explore deeper spiritual truths, providing moral lessons and guidance for Sufis on their path towards a profound connection and love for God.
