Jacob Lee Welch is an artist, but not your average artist, hats and shoes are his canvas and manga and cartoons are his passion. After his life hit a rough patch, Jake was diagnosed with clinical depression. Realizing something had to change he turned to his lifelong passion as his therapist.  In a rut, a simple photo of some painted shoes shared to him by a friend, revitalized Jake and that day he gave himself purpose. Within hours, he set about to start playing with the medium as a canvas. Before long he found people wanted to buy his creations. From there spawned an enterprise which keeps him focused and at peace with himself. Jacob works when everyone else sleeps. Like many artists it is this deep work and constant failures to arrive at his desired vision that keeps him driven in his day to day. This is an inspirational story of a former school teacher who has rediscovered the best parts of who he is, through exploring, creating and painting. You Don't Fight Alone Charity founder, Keaton Leikam, has turned his experience in living with bipolar disorder into a charitable enterprise helping others dealing with the same challenges as himself.  I hope you enjoy this inspirational episode where Keaton gives us a raw and real insight into the life and challenges faced by someone managing their mental health day to day.  (IF ON YOUTUBE - PLEASE DON"T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE CHANNEL)  Keaton Leikam shares his story from being diagnosed with bipolar disorder to starting the "You Don't Fight Alone" charity to help others managing similar experiences to him.  Keaton Leikam was 20 years old on May 22nd, 2009 when he first  attempted suicide, surviving only because a friend called an ambulance.   Hospitalised for the 4 days following the attempt. During his time in the intensive care unit, Keaton began to wrestle with emotions he’d thought long gone. He was checked into an inpatient psychiatric unit. On one hand, there were the feelings of regret.  What would happen to him now? What was wrong with him? How could he fix it? And would anyone understand?  His experiences during this first time in inpatient care — and subsequent times, when he met doctors and caregivers who exercised compassion and understanding — inspired the beginnings of You Don’t Fight Alone.   You Don’t Fight Alone is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping those with mental illness — to tell those who are scared as Keaton was that this isn’t the end; that instead, it could be a new beginning.   You Don’t Fight Alone is an organisation of support, comfort, and camaraderie, with the goal of reducing stigma around mental illness. To Keaton, it’s important for everyone to know that many people live with mental illness and enjoy success on their terms. They manage their condition in their day-to-day lives so well that you might never know of their inner demons.  Keaton himself is one of those people- if you talked to him today, you likely would not know that he suffers from bipolar disorder unless he told you himself.  But he didn’t start like that- it took years of trial and error, of eventual self-acceptance, and of support.  This is the beginning of Keaton Leikam’s story. A successful software developer. A man who lives with bipolar disorder. An everyday person who is there with you. Three years ago Coach Paul Foster was unhappy with the sport he loved and was about to walk away. Ranting on social media about missed opportunities a close friend offered some timely advice, "don't ruin your brand".  Taking that advice on board, Coachfos changed his tact and soon an opportunity to become a video analyst for a professional women's team came up and reinvigorated his love for the sport. Paul has dived deep and is forever improving his ability to play his role with the Townsville Fire in the WNBL in Australia. Had he walked away several years ago he would not have had the chance to be part of a national championship winning team and receive a championship ring. Now better for the experience, Paul is constantly learning to improve his craft. Coach Fos is a policeman by day, but has created a side hustle from his new found passion. He create sporting highlight reels for athletes to help them get in to college.
