Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball

No. 1 Miami’s unbeaten season ends with a 31–24 loss at Notre Dame—but the CANES refused to go quietly. Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber breaks down Miami’s comeback from a 24–3 deficit, the disputed fourth-down end-zone ruling involving Elija Lofton, and the missed opportunities that proved costly in South Bend. Without injured star Malachi Toney, Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes as Lofton and Cooper Barkate stepped up. Lofton finished with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Barkate caught ten passes for 92 official yards and two scores. We examine Shannon Dawson’s play calling, Mark Fletcher Jr.’s 13-carry workload, Miami’s first-half goal-line failure, improved second-half protection and the defensive response that brought the CANES back into the game. The decisive sequence: Mensah’s interception, CJ Carr’s fourth-down completion to Nolan James Jr., and Justin Scott’s facemask after a third-and-goal stop helped Notre Dame restore a two-touchdown lead. Miami answered again, but its final chances fell short. Plus: Player of the Game, Turning Point, X-Factor, Who Fudged Up, Second Guess and what this result means for Miami’s College Football Playoff case. Proud of the fight. Frustrated by the finish. Your CANES. Miami Hurricanes secure game-changing commitment as 5-star wide receiver Brysen Wright, the nation’s top receiver, chooses the Canes over Texas and Florida. Can Wright’s arrival, alongside fellow elite prospects like Nick Lennear and A'mir Sears, transform Miami’s offense into a national championship contender? The conversation focused on Wright's versatile skill set, explosive highlight plays, and advanced technical prowess—turning “50-50 balls into 80-20s”—while offering expert scouting comparisons to former USC standout Mike Williams. A key theme that emerged was Wright’s potential impact within Shannon Dawson’s dynamic offense and how his commitment reshapes Miami’s talent pipeline, especially in the wake of Malachi Toney’s injury. The discussion explored Miami’s stacked future receiver group, incoming quarterback talent, and looming challenges against Notre Dame. Can this generational wide receiver class restore the Hurricanes to dominance?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!KALSHIFor a limited time, Download Kalshi and use code Locked On to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalshi. Miami Hurricanes WR Malachi Toney expected to miss critical games after ankle surgery. Can the Hurricanes maintain their ACC and College Football Playoff hopes without their star receiver? The conversation focused on Toney’s high ankle sprain suffered in practice, confirming reports that he is set for surgery—potentially the tightrope procedure made famous by Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama. Recovery timelines suggest Toney could return for the ACC Championship Game or College Football Playoff if Miami advances. The discussion explored how Darian Mensah, Cooper Barkate, Dalen Upshaw, and Elija Lofton must step up as Miami faces Notre Dame this weekend, spotlighting the team's offensive depth and resilience. Several points were raised, including Notre Dame’s own injury setbacks and how adversity could galvanize the Hurricanes for a postseason run. Will Miami’s playmakers rise to the challenge and keep their championship ambitions alive?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!KALSHIFor a limited time, Download Kalshi and use code Locked On to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalshi. News was broken by Pete Thamel from ESPN that Malachi Toney suffered an ankle injury in practice, but will try to play against Notre Dame on Saturday. Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald has stated that UM staffers are saying the injury is not serious or season ending. Toney will likely push to play against the Fighting Irish. Host Alex Donno reacts to the news and explains why fellow receivers Cooper Barkate, Somourian Wingo, Daylyn Upshaw, Dre Jacobs, and tight end Elija Lofton will need to step up. Donno is joined by guest Larry Blustein to break down Miami freshmen Javian Mallory, Ben Congdon and JJ Dunnigan. Blu offers his scouting report on 5-Star WR Brysen Wright, who is set to choose between Miami, Texas and Florida on Thursday. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!KALSHIFor a limited time, Download Kalshi and use code Locked On to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalshi. Miami Hurricanes claim the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, but ACC bias sparks outrage—are the playoff hopes of Miami and fellow conference teams at risk? The conversation focused on the Hurricanes’ top billing, why the committee unanimously backed Miami, and the continued SEC favoritism that sees multiple two-loss teams jump up the rankings. The discussion explored the ranking repercussions for schools like Wake Forest and Notre Dame, and what dropping a crucial matchup could mean for Miami’s playoff trajectory.A key theme that emerged was Miami’s must-win mentality as they prepare to face Notre Dame, with predictions, tactical breakdowns, and injury updates shaping expectations. One concept discussed was the impact of Miami’s dominant run defense, Notre Dame’s personnel questions, and star prospects like Brysen Wright potentially reclassifying and committing to the Hurricanes. Don’t miss insights into Miami’s matchup strategies and how the evolving playoff landscape influences their pursuit of a national title.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!KALSHIFor a limited time, Download Kalshi and use code Locked On to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalshi.
