In today’s episode, I catch up with Dr. Kristian Edwards- she’s the Founder and CEO of the one stop shop for non toxic, all natural, black owned products, BLK+GRN. As a public health professor and graduate of Yale and John’s Hopkins University, Dr. Edwards had a passion to find products that were non toxic and all natural for use in her everyday life. This occurred once she found out that products marketed to black women were disproportionally infused with harmful chemicals, compared to products being sold to other demographics! Dr. Kristian thought this was absurd and sought out to create her very own non toxic marketplace, that featured products created by all Black Female Artisans. Dr. Kristian’s entrepreneurial endeavor is the culmination of her belief in #BlackGirlMagic and her experiences in the public health industry. She is an unshakable optimist who is passionate about helping women cultivate a lifestyle that’s free of artificial ingredients, toxins, and harmful chemicals. She believes that doing so is the only way to foster true happiness. The fundamental hope in buying Black and living green as a non-compromising choice is what connects her journey to a community that also wants to craft and consume products consciously. Since 2018, BLK+GRN has elevated over 100 black owned brands and has shipped over 19,000 orders of non toxic products worldwide! BLK+GRN sells products that go through a rigorous checklist of qualifications to ensure that consumers are receiving the safest, highest quality of products sold in categories such as skin care, hair care, bath & body, plus more! BLK+GRN has been featured in publications such as Essence, Forbes, Blavity, USA Today, and The New York Times - to name a few. Dr. Kristian attributes the early success of her company to the artisans and customers who remain authentic and intentional about health, wellness, and community cultivation. I had such a great time interviewing Dr. Kristian Edwards as she shared her journey through entrepreneurship in this candid discussion! Meet Jade Aminah- CEO/Founder of The Lazy Hat! Starting out as a natural hair blogger, Jade spent a lot of her time teaching simple, cute natural hairstyles to her following on her Youtube channel @Simplyjade_101. However, Jade quickly began to realize that there were also those lazy days where women with natural hair did not feel up to styling their hair at all, but still wanted to look cute in public. As a result, Jade invented The Lazy Hat, a new and convenient hat with quality hair attached, designed for the busy black woman on the go! Proven to be a naturalista's best friend, the idea for The Lazy Hat sprung out of the early pandemic when Jade Aminah had no time or motivation to style her own natural hair, but still needed a way to look presentable when stepping out of the house to run quick errands or even hop on a quick zoom meeting call for work! Jade Aminah sought out her materials and hand-crafted a simple solution to use when she was either having a bad hair day or when there was simply just not enough time to style her hair for an upcoming task. Having been actively engaged with her YouTube following for over six years sharing natural hair tutorials, Jade devised The Lazy Hat for women of color who might also want a quick fix to their hair while on the go, just like her! In today's episode, I had the pleasure of catching up with Mariel Mejia, the Founder/CEO of Pink Root Hair Products. Mariel is a Dominican-American NYC native, born and raised in the Bronx. After years of using relaxers on her hair from the young age of 11, Mariel found herself left with dry, brittle hair from all the damage caused to it by using excessive chemicals and heat. After graduating college in 2017, Mariel Mejia began experimenting with DIY recipes and formulas to improve her hair’s condition. Through much hard work, dedication and brilliant formulations, Mariel Mejia was able to launch Pink Root Hair Products in 2019. With her brand new company initially starting out as a passion project, Mariel soon decided to take the leap and left her corporate job quickly after that to work on her hair care brand full time! Pink Root Products was created to help customers struggling with chemically treated and heat-damaged hair, transition it back to its natural glory. I can’t wait to share Mariel Mejia's amazing story with you, she is truly genuine and left so many gems in this interview! The black hair care industry is a 1.5 trillion dollar industry that continues to grow from the profits of black women, without black women having much ownership in the industry. The same hair industry that was built off of black women, continues to be saturated with big companies that have been exposed for using increased chemicals that are known to be harmful, synthetic and highly toxic. These products are in fact specifically targeted and marketed to the black community despite these findings and without any recourse. Studies show that there are direct correlations between the harmful chemicals being used by black women in hair products marketed to them and the increase in health issues/diseases that we disproportionally face as black women when compared to any other group i.e. Fibroids, Cancer, Endometriosis, etc. Have you thought about creating your own product/business but feel stuck in the process? – Here’s why YOU should tune in: With the natural hair movement changing the way black women think about what goes into our hair/body, we are seeing a rise in entrepreneurship within the black community with a real sentiment for organic, non-toxic, safe and synthetic free products. Knotless Box Braids are my go to hair style when the weather gets warmer and retaining length is usually a positive result of that when protective styling is executed the right way. I had gotten so used to wearing my beautiful braid outs over the winter, that when Spring rolled around, I honestly felt lost when it came to styling. Once the weather started to have a touch of humidity in the air, my braid outs where just shrinking up too much and a little too fast. Not only that, I realized that when the weather gets warmer, I feel super uncomfortable with having hair in my face. It feels hot, sticky and with all the products I put on my hair... a breakout is bound to happen with my hair sticking to my cheeks! I then decided to do my tried and true, DIY Knotless Box Braids and could not be happier! In order to braid your hair with ease, I compiled my tips to execute this hair style without all the hassle! Have you ever wondered about the long term effects of the toxic chemicals found in black hair care products? I decided to go more in depth with this discussion to find the reasons why and how black women are disproportionately exposed to increased levels of toxins in hair products, when compared to other groups. In order to get to the bottom of this alarming data, I decided to have an open discussion with Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Sharleen St. Surin-Lord, MD. About Dr. St. Surin-Lord: Voted Top Doctor in the D.C. Metropolitan area, Dr. St. Surin-Lord is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Assistant Professor at Howard University College of Medicine. She is also the owner of Visage Dermatology & Aesthetic Center in Largo, Maryland. Dr. St. Surin-Lord is frequently quoted in articles related to the field of dermatology with topics ranging from acne, hyperpigmentation, hair fragility, scalp health and more. She has been featured in The Huffington Post, Byrdie, Prevention, Web MD, Health Line and has a hair column called "Hair It Is" in Happi Magazine! Dr. St. Surin-Lord's level of expertise is remarkable and she truly gets candid to shed light on some of the major toxins that are found in black hair care products and how they are effecting our health at alarming rates! In this episode, we discuss: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals to be aware of before purchasing products The link between toxins in hair products, Cancer, Fibroids and Hair Loss Treatment options for hair loss How we can fight to keep harmful products geared toward black women off the shelves I am so excited for this episode and I know that you will learn so much from Dr. Sharleen St. Surin-Lord, who is truly a gem. If you've been natural for some time, you have probably run into the problem of single strand knots at some point in your natural hair journey. These knots often tend to look like little tiny microscopic beads at the end of your individual hair strand and many times, on more than just one. Single strand knots are also synonymous with the term Fairy Knots. This is due to the fact that the knots are bound so tiny and tight, that it looks like a fairy did it! These are actual strands of hair that have coiled up on themselves and often times, create even bigger tangles with other hair strands next to them. Continue to tune in now to learn more and how you can prevent this from happening so often!  Visit my blog and leave a comment at Hair'sTheScoop.com. Steaming natural hair is the process of using moist heat to help lift the cuticle layer that protects the hair shaft and allow for moisture to penetrate through. By having the cuticle layer open, this helps for much better absorption of moisturizing hair products, masks and treatments.
