Here, in Hopkins, my parents instilled in me and my sisters the value of hard work; washing dishes, and waiting tables. At the same time, they taught me the importance of giving back to community through sponsoring Little League Teams or feeding the homeless at our restaurant on Thanksgiving. They taught me the value of remaining civically engaged in order to help strengthen the community you love.   I've now lived in Hopkins for 15 years and still on 11th Ave. The apple certainly didn't fall far from the tree. My wife Kathryn and I both love this city and its people. We also love raising our daughter in such a connected, caring community. I joined a group of residents in the Hopkins Coalition as a way to be civically engaged with the people of this town and work to have their issues heard and their talents activated.   I want to see Hopkins continue to grow strong financially and demonstrate true small-town leadership. As Mayor of Hopkins and the Deputy Commissioner at the City of Minneapolis, I bring to the table 15 years of deep community engagement in our state's most diverse communities while leading teams that deliver nationally recognized programs. I bring solutions that are win-wins for communities, businesses and individuals and have the experience as Mayor to ensure that our City stays vibrant, balanced and strong.   I firmly believe we can continue to increase the growth and impact of this community while improving affordability, economic opportunity, and maintaining our path to becoming a national leader in climate change while still retaining our small town charm. Prof. Greer's book Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford University Press) investigates the increasingly ethnically diverse black populations in the US from Africa and the Caribbean. She finds that both ethnicity and a shared racial identity matter and also affect the policy choices and preferences for black groups. Professor Greer is currently writing her second manuscript and conducting research on the history of all African Americans who have run for the executive office in the U.S. Her research interests also include mayors and public policy in urban centers. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. My conversation with Anna begins at 32 mins Dr. Anna Baeth (she/her) is a critical feminist scholar and a cultural studies practitioner of sport. Her research centers on the gendering of sport spaces, the eternally moving body, and social movements and sport. A native of Frederick, MD, Baeth has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in Sport Sociology. While there, Baeth was a research assistant in the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport. Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Baeth is a perennial coach and advocate for cultural awareness in sport spaces. Holding an M.S. in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College (MA), Baeth has been an assistant lacrosse coach at Hamline University (MN), Head Field Hockey Coach at Oberlin College and Conservatory (OH), and assistant field hockey/lacrosse coach at Mt. Holyoke College (MA). In 2009, she rode her bicycle cross country with the non-profit Bike and Build to raise awareness of affordable housing issues. Before dedicating herself to education leadership, she spent over a decade as a classroom teacher, where she earned recognition as Teacher of the Year at Hialeah Middle School in 2010. Her teaching experience grounds her work and fuels her commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. ​Hernández-Mats has served on the Florida Education Association Governance Board and Executive Cabinet, the United Way Board of Miami, the Florida AFL-CIO's executive board, the Children's Trust executive board, and the Education Fund executive board. She also chairs the American Federation of Teachers' (AFT) Women's Rights Committee, where she championed policies that prioritize students' learning environments and well-being. ​From 2016 to 2025, Hernández-Mats served as President of United Teachers of Dade (UTD), the largest teachers' union in the southeastern United States. In 2022, she was selected as the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Florida, reflecting her stature as a leader who could speak to the needs of students, families, and educators statewide. ​Hernández-Mats has been recognized nationally for her leadership, including being honored by Miami Today's Achiever Series in 2019 for advancing public education throughout Miami-Dade County. She has addressed national organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the Miami Women's March, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference. ​Born and raised in Miami, Hernández-Mats is a first-generation American of Honduran descent and the first Hispanic officer elected to lead UTD. She holds a bachelor's degree in emotionally handicapped education from Florida International University and a master's degree in business management from St. Thomas University. Her lifelong commitment to students, advocacy, and community service continues to inspire those working for a brighter future. Hernández-Mats is happily married and the mother of two children. Additional television appearances as himself or performing stand up have included "Conan", "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", "Would You Rather...with Graham Norton", "Good Afternoon America" and multiple times on The Today Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and on History's I Love the 1880s.
