Dave's second book, Unrigged: How Americans Are Battling Back to Save Democracy, chronicles the victories and defeats in state efforts to reform elections and uphold voting rights. A frequent lecturer and media source about gerrymandering, he is the former editor-in-chief of Salon.com, and the former CEO and publisher of the Connecticut News Project. He is a digital media fellow at the Wilson Center for the Humanities and the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. Steve joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1990 as a Presidential Management Intern, where he worked on National Wildlife Refuge System, Migratory Bird, and Law Enforcement issues in Headquarters.  In 1993 he joined the staff of the NCTC where he was deeply involved in the design and development of the NCTC campus and its operations.  He later become Division Manager of Facility and Administrative Operations, Division Manager of Education and Outreach, and Division Manager of Training Support and Heritage.  Steve was instrumental in the establishment of the Fish and Wildlife Service's national history/heritage programs, including development of the NCTC museum, exhibits, and archives.  He has also served as the Financial Officer and Special Assistant to the Director at the NCTC.  He is a member of Cohort 1 of the FWS Advanced Leadership Development Program, and received the Service's Heritage Award in 2018. Steve has been instrumental in a number of national-scope conservation initiatives and gatherings over the past two decades.  He was a lead organizer of the National Dialogue on Children and Nature in 2006, an event that kickstarted the Connecting People to Nature Movement in America.  He is a co-founder of the Student Climate and Conservation Congress (SC3) and the Native Youth Community Adaption and Leadership Congress, both of these youth leadership events have fostered a new cadre of young adult leaders in Conservation.  Steve also co-organized a series of important national conservation history symposia, including the 1999 Leopold Historical Symposium, Rachel Carson Symposium, The Muries Symposium, and the 50th Anniversary of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Symposium, He co-edited proceedings documents on several of these events. In the past Steve has worked as a river guide in northwest Maine, as a backcountry caretaker for the Randolph Mountain Club in the northern Presidential Range in New Hampshire; a buyer and technical representative in the ski and climbing industry; a Legislative Fellow for the Connecticut State Legislature; a teacher and coach; and a municipal public works administrator.  He also worked as a media specialist at the Talcott Mountain Science Center in Connecticut. Steve is the former Board Chair of The Murie Center in Moose, WY; is the founding President of the American Conservation Film Festival in Shepherdstown; and is the past President of the Unison Preservation Society.  Non-work activities include river running, fishing, writing, playing mandolin and bass, going to live music shows, and spending time with his family.  Steve resides in Middleburg, Virginia.  Brad Meiklejohn  Brad has represented The Conservation Fund in Alaska since 1994. He has completed hundreds of conservation projects across Alaska and the Western United States, including the dramatic removal of the Eklutna River Dam. Brad is currently leading the construction of a wildlife highway crossing near his family home in northern New Hampshire. Brad previously served as President of the Patagonia Land Trust, President of the American Packrafting Association,  Associate Director of the Utah Avalanche Center and  a board director of the Murie Center. Brad has been recognized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the National Land Protection Award and the National Wetlands Conservation Award, and he received the Olaus Murie Award from the Alaska Conservation Foundation. Brad is a wilderness explorer and birder who has traveled widely across Alaska and the world. Dr. Michael Mann is Presidential Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania, with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. His research focuses on climate science and climate change. He was selected by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002, was awarded the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geophysical Union in 2012. He made Bloomberg News' list of fifty most influential people in 2013.  He has received the Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education, the Stephen H. Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication from Climate, the Award for Public Engagement with Science from the AAAS, the Climate Communication Prize from the American Geophysical Union and the Leo Szilard Award of the American Physical Society. He received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement 2019 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2020. He is a Fellow of the AGU, AMS, GSA, AAAS and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He is co-founder of RealClimate.org, author of more than 200 peer-reviewed and edited publications, numerous op-eds and commentaries, and five books including Dire Predictions, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, The Madhouse Effect, The Tantrum that Saved the World, and The New Climate War. A nationally recognized thought leader, science communicator, pediatrician, and health services researcher, he is a passionate advocate for the creation and use of evidence to improve health and health care for all.  Before joining AcademyHealth, Dr. Carroll was a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Chief Health Officer at Indiana University, where he also served as Associate Dean for Research Mentoring and the director of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Comparative Effectiveness Research at Indiana University School of Medicine. He earned a B.A. in chemistry from Amherst College, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and an M.S. in health services from the University of Washington School of Public Health, where he was also a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. Dr. Carroll's research focused on the study of information technology to improve pediatric care, decision analysis, and areas of health policy including cost-effectiveness of care and health care financing reform. He is the author of The Bad Food Bible and the co-author of three additional books on medical myths. In addition to having been a regular contributor to The New York Times and The Atlantic, he has written for many other major media outlets and is co-Editor-in-Chief at The Incidental Economist, an evidence-based health policy blog. He also has a popular YouTube channel and podcast called Healthcare Triage, where he talks about health research and health policy. The Washington Monthly called him as "one of America's most important journalists." The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy.
