Today’s episode is with Mrs. Rose Rhetta. This episode is special because it was done for Hampton’s 150th legacy, and I am sharing it now that I’m officially a Hampton graduate. Mrs. Rose Rhetta is a 1939 graduate of Hampton University, and she is currently Hampton’s oldest living graduate. This interview took place when she was 100, and she is now 104. She is originally from New York, and moved to Illinois where she currently resides in 1942 when she married her college sweetheart, Henry Rhetta. Together they have an amazing legacy, with three children, Jane, Dwayne, and Henry Jr with two grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. During this interview, Mrs. Rhetta and I discuss her time at Hampton University, and her legacy at Hampton and the legacy of the university. Today’s episode is with Dr. and Mrs. Hrabowski. Dr. Freeman Hrabowski is an American educator, advocate, and mathematician. In May 1992 he began his term as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, one of the twelve public universities composing the University System of Maryland. He and his wife, Mrs. Jaqueline Hrabowski, are graduates of Hampton University. During this interview, we discuss their time at Hampton University, Dr. Hrabowski’s role as President of UMBC, and the legacy of Hampton. Today’s episode is with Ms. Sheila Ruffin. Sheila Ruffin is 2008 graduate of Hampton and 2011 Howard Law graduate, and she  was born near the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where her grandfather, “Big Rich,” was an avid boater. At age 6, she began planning family vacations with her mother, which taught her about the travel industry. As the Tourism Manager for a Caribbean carnival company, Sheila made history by coordinating the first U.S. group to attend and participate in a Cuban carnival, which hosted 120 represented countries and 90,000 attendees. In 2012, Sheila became familiar with yachting while working in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on yacht marina construction, impacts from boating pollution, public beach access, and port congestion. As an energy attorney since 2015, she evaluated applications for commercial marinas and boat storage facilities, and assessed pollutants on waters. Sheila earned her travel agent certification from the Travel Institute, and founded Soca Caribbean Yacht Charters to “make waves & rock the boat” in the yacht industry, and it has been featured in publications such as Travel Noire and Black Enterprise. In the interview, we discuss her time at Hampton University, as well as her time working in the tourism industry. Today’s episode is with Ms. Ruth Carter. Ms. Carter is an Oscar award-winning American costume designer, for film and television, with over 40 films to her credit. During her near 30 year film career, she has worked with some of the top directors in Hollywood including Spike Lee, Lee Daniels, Reggie Hudlin, Steven Spielberg and Ryan Cooglar. Ms. Carter has earned three nominations for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Spike Lee's biographical film Malcolm X (1992), Steven Spielberg's historical drama film Amistad (1997), and Ryan Coogler's superhero film Black Panther (2018), for which she was awarded the Oscar for Best Costume Design at the 91st Academy Awards. She is the first black woman to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. She also received an Emmy nomination for her work on the 2016 reboot, “Roots.” Ms. Carter is a 1982 graduate of Hampton Institute, currently known as Hampton University, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre Arts. She also served as the keynote speaker at Hampton University’s 148th Commencement Ceremony in 2018. In this interview, Ms. Carter discuss her time at Hampton University, as well as her time working in the entertainment industry.
