Description

This is essentially an Audiobioigraphy. It's filled with stories taken from my very long life of experiences. And it's all 100% true -- maybe a little exaggerated in places for effect, but still true. I have had a lot of fun writing and recording them, but even more fun living them. I add to them whenever I think of something worth saying. I hope they're half as much fun for you!

Flying home, literally and figuratively.
Season One – A Yank Down Under In both New York and Hollywood, I’d produced some pretty big shows.  When I first got to Australia, I was looking for ways to become a part of the community and an opportunity came up that let me do that.  It started out pretty routine, but quickly took on dimensions that were unimaginable.  I was suddenly in the middle of an effort to give back the use of their hands to quadriplegics.  It was beyond rewarding.  It was epic. Everybody involved felt the importance of doing something, however large or small, for a stranger.  It was brilliant. Tell a friend about the podcast, in person or on your phone. Season One – A Yank Down Under I was living in New York.   I did a lot of travelling because I could get cheap tickets.   I’d already been to Africa, the Middle East and Europe.  I got a chance to visit Australia and jumped at it.   The last thing on my mind was that I’d ever live here.   On the plane from Honolulu, I met an American who had interest in a cattle station up in the top end.   He invited me up.   I couldn’t have had a better introduction to this beautiful country if someone planned it for me.   It just happened. Season One – A Yank Down Under If you’ve never seen actual gold, the way it comes from the ground, you have no idea how magical it can be.   I didn’t either until I met this guy in Melbourne who went out from time to time prospecting.   He invited me along one day and gave me the experience of a lifetime.   It’s easy to imagine why people have gone nuts over the stuff for eons. Season One – A Yank Down Under Somehow I found out that they were looking for people to be spear carriers for a Russian opera that was coming to the Melbourne International Festival.  I’d never considered doing anything like that, but a gig’s a gig, so I put my hand up.  It was one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever done.  Before it was over, it nearly became an international incident.  John Howard and Vladimir Putin got involved.  It also turned out to be very revealing.  Pun intended. Season One – A Yank Down Under I was at a block party in Toorak, minding my own business, when this woman came up to me and told me I have a great face.   That chance meeting resulted in a religious conversion and my portrait being submitted for the Archibald Prize.   The twists and turns of this story, the triumph and tragedy, would be unbelievable if you wrote the story as fiction.   But it all happened. Season One – A Yank Down Under I was out of a job.  At lunchtime, I often went to Channel 5 in New York to play a nerf basketball game in the art department.  I go there this one day and two of my former colleagues from Channel 5 were in town to prep for a huge gig they’d landed in Hollywood, the first Ali-Frazier fight from Madison Square Garden.  It was the biggest sporting event in the world. This podcast is all about the unlikely story of how I became associate producer and the things that happened leading up to and during THE FIGHT.  Ray Martin and I were probably the only two people in Australia who were there that night. As much as I’d like to be thought of as a fair dinkum Aussie, and I would, I live with the fact that I’m not. I am an immigrant.  But here’s the way I like to put it: I’m Greek by blood, American by birth and Aussie by choice.  I’ve been here 25 years and counting.  These years in Australia have been some of the most creatively productive years of my life.  And this podcast demonstrates that I’m still not finished. I’ve had amazing experiences both here and before I got here, a few of them I can hardly believe myself.  I want to share a few of my stories with you and hope they’ll entertain you for a little while.  If you get anything else out of them, that’s an unintended bonus.
