While others harness the potential to lead us to dark and unforgiving places. Do our choices control our destiny? For many explorers, it was a race to see which expedition would be the first to chart and reach the Earth’s Magnetic South Pole. A conquest finally accomplished by the Nimrod Expedition in 1909. A member of that team, 26-year-old Sir Douglas Mawson also held that honor and place in history. A few short years later Mawson would lead his own expedition team back to that icy coastline, hoping to conduct scientific research and chart new areas. Deborah Scaling Kiley sat in a rubber dingy in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, reciting the Lord’s Prayer in a desperate attempt to convince herself she hadn’t gone mad. The water surrounding the boat had turned a sickly shade of red, as the blood of her devoured crew mate rose to the surface. love this podcast but I'm so confused! Are there new episodes? I am a Wondery+ subscriber (for all those unwilling to pay for great content & hard work I don't understand you, we all deserve to be paid... but I digress) and I only see 8 episodes on +, but I've read there are more? Tyler advertised new episodes recently on The Minds of Madness, but.. nothing. I honestly love it so much it's the main reason I pay for Wondery+ but the messaging is so unclear. If there are more than 8 episodes, someone please direct me! thanks for the great podcast guys!! and please make more if there arent any lol

Glad to see a couple more free episodes. There are so many great free pods out there that I don’t feel compelled to pay to hear one. I do support two on patreon that are my favorites that give me extra content but also offer free episodes for those who may not be able to pay.

This one sounds like a summarized Reader's Digest story. What is up with the weird intonation by both readers?

Woah, where to start?? I guess I'll start with saying I seek out podcasts like this because, like Debra, I have gone through life for the most part alone. When I'd managed to out maneuver the dysfunction of family of origin I thought the rest of life would be easier. I'd find love, create a family that would keep that love going. What I've learned (months shy of 50) is that the life I'm creating is more like a beta version of anything else. Somehow I still married into dysfunction, it was so very covert. To keep it short, I related to Debra. Our tribe is small but strong. We need something to channel in the absence of belonging / family. I'm not religious but respect spiritual principles that have proved themselves throughout time. That said, dysfunctional homes feel like a generational curse and simply out living it is a triumph. Cheers and hats off to your exploration of what it is to be awake and alive.

I am addicted to polar, arctic stories. Shackleton and the like. So I was skeptical that this one would meet my high standards. It EXCEEDED them! A riveting story! A ripping yarn! I loved it!!!! Well done. I can't wait for more!

AMAZING Life Story. She lost her son, John, to a drowning in 2009.So strange considering how good his mother was about water.I believe what happened that day after the boat sank, entailed a lot more details that she tried to forget. She may have carried guilt for something that happened.I do find it hard to swallow that if someone is pouring blood nonstop and it's bringing many sharks, that you would be right beside them .I know you don't want to hear but she would be the first to go, from someone's hand, in order to save someone in place of all 4 getting eaten by sharks.
