David Sanborn Was Cool

David Sanborn Was Cool

2024-05-2101:05:27

The Nightfly is back to do a tiny tribute to the great David Sanborn and some of his influence, especially his work with the great Dave Grusin, Sting, David Bowie and David Juskow (I added my name in to make another David reference - I should see if he worked with Dave Grohl -- although I do have a clip of him on David Letterman - SO. . . we're good). Also, another, if you can believe it, anchovy incident - I mean, it's impossible, right? AND, sending my backpack home in luxury turned out to be a major financial mix-up and toting around turned out to be a pain being in such a small place as well (but it's all hilarious) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Juskow in the City is thinking of moving to the State of West Virginia - I mean, probably not but did you know it's only 4Β½ hours away from NYC? I didn't know that. Also, I have dinner with showrunner of One Day at a Time on Netflix, Mike Royce who confesses he told Dave Attell to give up comedy in 1988. You know, cause it just wasn't for him. πŸ˜… And, the Roast of Tom Brady and the new 24/7 channel - all Charles in Charge, all the time. What a show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week we go to the legendary 54 Below Cabaret room (a possible crummy snobatorium) where me AND my friend Chris got into a fight with the waiter over anchovies. So already it's a great podcast. You know you love my restaurant fight stories. πŸ˜‚ The last day of class was an extremely memorable one as we all said goodbye and received some extraordinary emails from the kids. Also, I bought 126 pieces of chalk for the girl next door to make her sidewalk art - you know how I like to contribute to the arts (in the cheapest way possible) AND a trip to the awesome speakeasy in Jackson Heights where I try my first Mint Julep just in time for the Kentucky Derby. On this week's episode we are reminded how Taxis in New York City need to go (but not the television series), why the CBS Network needs to go (and all their series) and how the only saving grace this week was the joy of looking at a nice clean convenience store out the window of a sad bar in New Jersey (cause they're gross in New York City). Also, going to see Book of Mormon on Broadway again; getting into a fight with a lady with a walker working at a clothing store; a crazy ex stating she was in jail (again) AND the kid in my class who never heard of Steve Martin. Old Man Juskow is incensed this week. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today being Passover Professor Juskow takes a lesson plan page out of my class and we discuss films released in 1982. Although I think I forgot 1981 hilariously (we'll get back to it) there certainly is a treasure trove to discuss. We'll discuss the hilarious Morgan Fairchild vehicle, The Seduction; the awful sequel to Grease, Grease 2 and the classics, or at least the Juskow classics, Al Pacino in Author, Author and the Mel Brooks inspired, My Favorite Year. Fun, fun, fun. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Dead Outlaw

Dead Outlaw

This week we go down to the West Village to see David Yazbek's new musical, "Dead Outlaw", which is terrific. We also run into my old managing partner from the firm at the play where I have become the Voldemort of the place (as in he who must not be named) - so EPIC. Also, as I go to see my friends Julian and Paul play piano also in the West Village and Julian doesn't finish his songs - it incenses me - so obviously - that's always a good podcast. And top it off with my lectures on the films of 1988 and 89, which include the greats, Sex, Lies & Videotape and Crimes & Misdemeanors. Interesting -- 2 films that have ampersands in them. That was a big thing in 1989. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
That's right. One hundred years or so ago there were riots right here in River City (downtown Manhattan) over who's theatre had the better production of Hamlet. I only bring it up because it's my new course lecture and well -- it's incredibly hilarious and may make you feel a little better about the world today because nothing seems to change so. . . . -- Also this week, Artist Drew Friedman documentary; Gilbert Gottfried's daughter inventing the waffle sandwich; the Comedy Cellar Holiday Party (yes in April) πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and my mother's introduction roast of me before my lecture. I promise you, you will not find a stranger podcast then this anywhere else. Yay! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Three Presidents past and present came into town this week and I know the first thing you thought of was "how would this affect Dave Juskow of Juskow in the City?" - and I appreciate that. Well, it was a nightmare, as usual. I thought they all hated New York City (except for Clinton), why do they bother me? Anyhoo, that, our friend Marcie coming to town; the Nickelodeon documentary and that poor Drake Bell and, again, "how does this affect Dave Juskow"; comedian Todd Barry's birthday party and how "Don't You Forget About Me" came to be sung by the band "Simple Minds". All this and more on an all new Juskow in the City. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Sure Thing

The Sure Thing

2024-03-2601:08:21

On today's episode I lecture to my class on the importance of friendship and relationships. I'm worried about this generation of kids not having personal contacts and too much AI. I know it sounds silly but I've been seeing things with newer comics and my students that are worrying signs about the Earth's future. I know, right? But don't worry -- we're also talking about the Rob Reiner movie, "The Sure Thing", which I showed in class this week and according to the kids - it completely holds up so that's promising. Then of course, more cheese trouble at the Isle of Capri, intestinal trouble at Bloomingdales and a great night with college buddies. Well that's a well rounded episode I'd say. πŸ˜… Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode we travel to Connecticut from the City which is a horrible task to have dinner with the great Paul Shaffer only to find out we're not having dinner with the great Paul Shaffer (Spoiler Alert); also another awful dinner at Morso which is just so classic that I keep showing up there; a visit to the Geek Squad trying to sell the classic coverage bogus plan; yes, you heard right Aaron Rodgers possible run on one of those other Kennedy idiots tickets and the new Comedy Central show in England that had me extremely confused (and you will be too). It's an all new Juskow in the City. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's Spring Break again and it's once again time to Paaaarrrty! And, if you're like me that means a nice 6:00 pm reservation at a restaurant and then off to bed with you. But seriously folks. . . Went to dinner 3 times this week and nothing really horrible happened (darn). We did, however, get to burn that restaurant from last week as Evan called the owner and really let him have it. But, I should've just showed a movie this week in class - even my nephew fell asleep during my lecture. "I'm serious people, this is my job." AND, the newspaper search; beer flights and how stupid you are if you live in Queens. Yep, I went there. πŸ˜› Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week the director of Clueless & Fast Times at Ridgemont High comes to class to regale us with her incredible stories of how Clueless got made and how a woman in 1982 was able to direct a motion picture; AND, how the book club I joined and left pulled a "Blue Man Group" on me (you'll get it); also, scathing articles on my favorite restaurant, Jimbo's and our favorite TV Show, Big John, Little John. Oh, and of course -- a new restaurant issue. HELLO!! I would say all in all - THIS is the podcast that describes everything about Juskow in the City. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Carlyle hotel in New York City is a fancy hotel alright -- they have the fruit flavored tootsie rolls at the front desk and let me tell you something -- that's usually only Halloween candy - so that's real class. Also, this week, since I've become a professor, I've started giving notes on friends Stand-Up specials - even when they don't ask. Cause that's hilarious. My nephew tries to pull an AI scam on his paper; I go to the campus diner - which by the way is open till 1am. Manhattan, take a memo; and the awful steak dinner in Jersey. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As no one in this great nation of ours has the GUTS to release it, I had to take matters into my own hands to see the new Woody Allen movie. Also this week, the continuing pain in the ass literally and figuratively that comes from getting into a car accident that is not your fault; all the women of a certain age that asked me to dance on, ironically, Lincoln's birthday. 😜 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Yes, this week I went to see the Broadway musical, Days of Wine & Roses, which leads to the question, why make a musical on Days of Wine & Roses. BUT, I do enjoy complaining so - I like to see everything and it's hard for anything to live up to Back to the Future at this point so. . . Also, this week - a funeral for one of the comedy club owners in town; a classic Russian meal at an authentic Russian restaurant with a run in with the late Brenda Vaccaro (she's not actually dead, who knew?); and another dinner with Dave Attell. Fortunately, we're good until August now. πŸ˜… Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Big Crash

The Big Crash

I got into a fun car accident this week with a crazy guy who didn't want to exchange insurance or involve the police. He said he could fix my car and to prove it he showed me his Home Depot card. WTF!!! Anyway, more on that later -- also the unbelievable Weehawken show at the Elks club and the Weehawken Rockin' Ferry Terminal - again, WTF!!! And, the big Paul Loren show at the restaurant where my guests got into a lovely Israel/Hamas fight. WTF!!! Why didn't I call this podcast, WTF!? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On today's episode - I have a run in with an escaped mental patient on the loose and lose a pair of pants along the way. All in the same week? What a show! Also, how many questions can you answer on my first quiz of the year AND "Hot Dog, the Movie" from 1984 -- should be the worst movie ever made but in a first viewing the cinematography is incredible. What the. . . . Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On today's episode of Juskow in the City, we head down to West 11th Street in the Greenwich Village twice this week for a restaurant that has been there since 1919 and I've never been to or heard of and yet I was there twice in five days. One of them was to celebrate the G.O.A.T.'s birthday, Dave Attell. Some annoying lady just sat down with us for the entire meal as Attell barraged her with insults she didn't seem to understand, which made the evening a legendary night. Also, first day of the new semester with lots more kids; my new thing of yelling at construction workers, that I feel seem suspicious when I've been drinking and discovering a new way to wear boats (lady's listen up) - you're welcome in advance. πŸ˜„ Hosted on Acast. There's nothing worse than horrible stand up comedy (ooops, I forgot about improv) -- well anyway, must we sit through the worst people in stand up to support a friend? That's what happened this week. Also, everyone's favorite, another waiter incident, in which this time instead of bringing back the billfold with change, they told us they ran out of change. WHAT!? And, on the way home from New Jersey run into a Palestinian protest. These people just don't take into consideration the little people who have just come back from an all you can eat rib joint. Oy. Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to an all new year of Juskow in the City and quality podcasting. You're welcome in advance. On this episode we discuss New Year's Eve, of course, at the Comedy Cellar; comedian Rachel Feinstein's Netflix taping; my 70's tap dance teacher's passing; how eating too much at the movies led to a tummy ache like a 6 year old and dinner at the Mayor's house. We also discuss the movies: Wonka, Saturn 3, The Rewrite, The Family Plan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It's great to be back! Hosted on Acast.
