I’ve long been the introverted, do-it-myself type. I like riding long miles alone, contemplating in silence. One might think these are ideal traits for a bikepacking racer. And they probably are. But my recent finish of my first ever bikepacking race, the Smoke N Fire 400, had almost nothing to do with being alone, and everything to do with a community.A community of women to be exact: Idaho Women’s Bikepacking. Founded by Laura Heiner, a long-time racer and multi-time finisher of the SNF 400, who was frustrated with the lack of women racing these events, the group taught me (and a lot of other women) how to bikepack.Full Story: https://www.femmecyclist.com/smoke-n-fire-400/Support the show
Have you been hunkered down at home for the last few years, dreaming of mountain bike vacations? Well, now is your time to finally go get out there! One great way to bike internationally is to join a tour group. I've done this in the past, and it's super helpful. They help take care of all of the logistics, they know what the good trails and routes are, so all you have to do is ride your bike and enjoy yourself! In this podcast episode, I chat with Amy Schweim from Women's Radical Pursuits. She runs mountain bike trips to Oaxaca, Mexico (as well as other Latin American countries). Even if you're not interested in joining a tour (or going to Mexico), you'll get some good tips on traveling internationally to bike. If you have a mountain bike, you need to pay attention to your suspension. (Unless, of course, it's a rigid mountain bike). This means setting it up properly, but also maintaining it. If you're like me, you probably neglect your suspension way more than you should. In this episode, I chat with Faith Mata from Jenson USA about setting up your suspension and getting it serviced. Full Show Notes: https://femmecyclist.com/suspension-set-up-and-maintenance-faith-mata/Jenson USA Suspension Service: https://bit.ly/3HAKNjv (affiliate link) Support the show

There are some women in this world that are truly heroes. That are superwomen. And in my opinion, Brooke Goudy is one of those women. She's a leader in the world of cycling, and does the advocacy work of 50 people. She does trail advocacy work, public policy as it relates to cycling infrastructure. She works with high school kids and women. But most importantly, as a black woman, she is putting herself out there to be a representative for women of color. To show them that there's a place where they belong in this--unfortunately--very white sport we're a part of. I felt so very honored to get to sit down with Brooke and interview her. Because, you know, she's a very busy woman! And I think listening you'll feel honored as well, and hopefully, inspired to go out and be a leader and do some advocacy work in your community. Did you know that between the ages of 8 and 11, girls drop out of cycling (and sports in general) at an alarming rate? To help combat this, Molly Hurford created Shred Girls.Shred Girls is a series of chapter books aimed at older elementary age girls with stories around, you guessed it, cycling. They are engaging, fun, and successful at keeping girls engaged in cycling at a critical age. When I first discovered Shred Girls, I knew I needed to get Molly Hurford, the author and creator of the books on the podcast. Molly is also the host of the Consummate Athlete podcast, and many other non-fiction cycling books. In this episode, we chat about Molly's books, the state of youth cycling today, saddle sores, training on limited time, and much more. Connect With MollyConsummateAthlete.comInstagram: @mollyjhurfordInstagram: @consummateathletehttps://shred-girls.com/Connect With Femme CyclistIG: @femme_cyclistFB Group: Femme Cyclist CommunityIG: @kristenlbonkoskiMusic Credit: https://josephmcdade.com/musicSupport the show

In this podcast episode, I interview Isla Short. If you don't know Isla, she's a professional mountain biker on the world cross-country circuit. What makes Isla stand out is her honesty and transparency. Rather than joining a big factory team, she's gone it solo. This has given her the opportunity to only work with sponsors she believes in and can endorse. She's also upfront about her mental and physical health struggle struggles. After a personal best 5th place at the 2020 world championships, she's struggled with both the pandemic and imposter syndrome competing amongst the best women in the world. We chat about all of that in this interview, and more. There's nothing like a cycling event or race to get you stoked on riding your bike. Events are fantastic for providing you something to work toward, for making new friends, for challenging your body, and for pumping some passion back into your relationship with cycling.Whether you're interested in an 8 mile fun ride or a 100 mile mountain bike ride, I can't encourage you enough to get signed up for SOMETHING. In this podcast episode, I chat with Liz Caracciolo. Liz is the founder of Ignite Events, a race company that "helps women achieve more than just a physical accomplishment."We chat about why she's creating beginner friendly events, how she's working to make them inclusive, and the importance of building resources that help women work on the mental aspect of sport, not just the physical. We also talk about Liz's background in triathlon, challenging ourselves by switching up cycling disciplines, and why you should visit Phoenix to ride.Full Show Notes: https://www.femmecyclist.com/liz-caracciolo-interviewConnect With Liz: Website: https://www.ignitevent.com/Instagram: @igniteevents_Facebook: IgniteWomensEventsConnect With Femme CyclistIG: @femme_cyclistFB Group: Femme Cyclist CommunityIG: @kristenlbonkoskiMusic Credit: https://josephmcdade.com/musicSupport the show
Self-identifying as a "fat woman," Marley Blonsky is one of the most charming, inspirational people in the cycling world today.  Many of us first discovered Marley thru the documentary "All Bodies On Bikes."  Since then, Marley has used the attention the film brought to expand her work bringing attention to size inclusivity and building inclusive cycling communities.  Marley reminds us that we don't have to look a certain way, have a particular body type, or fit in any mold to be considered a cyclist.  This is an important message for us ALL to remember. In this podcast interview, Marley shares what gear and bikes she recommends to larger bodied cyclists, what an inclusive group ride or event looks like, and how we can all become allies to bigger bodied cyclists.Full Show Notes: https://www.femmecyclist.com/marley-blonsky-interview/Connect With MarleyInstagram: @marleyblonskeyWebsite: marleyblonsky.comAll Bodies On Bikes IG: @allbodiesonbikesAll Bodies On Bikes Website: allbodiesonbikes.comConnect With Femme CyclistInstagram: @femme_cyclistWebsite: femmecyclist.comFacebook Group: Femme Cyclist CommunitySupport the show

I'm always curious to  hear how people got into cycling.  It's usually a spouse or significant other, sometimes it's a parent, a child, or a friend that first introduced them.  What I had never heard before is the story of a dog causing someone to fall in love with cycling.  And yet, that's exactly how Caroline got started.  I love this listener submitted story, coming at us all the way from Colombia.  Connect With CarolinaIG: @caro_c930Blog: https://bilingualmomdares.wordpress.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmr-HujNR7kShop Terry Bicycles: https://snp.link/ec5492d4Connect With Femme CyclistIG: @femme_cyclistFB Group: Femme Cyclist CommunityIG: @kristenlbonkoskiMusic Credit: https://josephmcdade.com/musicSupport the show
