This cold and flu season, we're bringing you a classic episode on clearing your nasal passage correctly.Blowing your nose is maybe the only small glint of satisfaction had while having a cold or sinus infection. But is blowing your nose actually good, or even safe? Dr. Sydnee and Justin look through the history of handkerchiefs and nose-wiping to the science of what happens to your sinuses when you blow your nose in order to try and find a happy medium.Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Harmony House: https://harmonyhousewv.com/

Cozy up by the fireplace with some weird listener medical questions. What's the difference between a disease and a disorder? Where does the extra blood during pregnancy come from? Did getting my gallbladder removed change my taste buds? Plus an update on the CDC website's recent posting about vaccines.Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Native American Aid: https://nativepartnership.org/naa/
The algorithm strikes again, this time telling Justin about a popular wellness trend known as a Dopamine Detox. Dopamine is often associated with pleasure centers and addiction, and certain corners of the internet think we are overflooded with it. But Dr. Sydnee talks about what dopamine is, its connection to Parkinson's and other medical conditions, and how this culture around self-deprivation came about.Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Native American Aid: https://nativepartnership.org/naa/
Sometimes we like to have fun on Sawbones, like diving into a recently reported story of a truck full research animals who escaped and were infectious to humans. But what actually happened, were these monkeys infected, and what is the purpose of monkeys being infected in the name of science in the first place?Sawbones audience feedback survey: https://forms.gle/kLXiFU8iRzAazPyn9Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Native American Aid: https://nativepartnership.org/naa/
Often pseudo-scientific medicine is brought to Dr. Sydnee by friends and family. But this time, she encountered methylene blue in the wild! But Dr. Sydnee talks about the history of this colorful substance and what it can be actually used for.Sawbones audience feedback survey: https://forms.gle/kLXiFU8iRzAazPyn9Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Border Angels: https://www.borderangels.org/

And what is the humble leech’s role in modern medicine?Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Border Angels: https://www.borderangels.org/
Justin and Dr. Sydnee continue to bring news from the forefront of history with the second part of the announcement about autism – a possible treatment. It's leucovorin: also known as vitamin B-9. It can't possibly be that simple, can it? (No). Dr. Sydnee explains where this idea came from and what leucovorin is actually currently used for in medicine.Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Border Angels: https://www.borderangels.org/
You may have heard the recent announcement From the US government linking acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism. Well, at the risk of spoiling the episode, it’s nothing. Another episode in the Sawbones multiverse, Dr. Sydnee and Justin resist Dr. Richard Asher, who is the person who coined Munchausen Syndrome. There are many eponymous disorders and diseases, but Munchausen is an interesting case of a disease named after a character who is based on a real person. A dovetail from last week’s episode, Dr. Sydnee and Justin talk about the official pain scale of insect stings, all compiled by Justin O. Schmidt. So who was this Justin, how did his research contribute to science, and did he really get stung by all these insects to make a non-objective scale? (Answer: yes).Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Immigrant Defenders Law Center: https://www.immdef.org/

It used to be that if you needed to get to the hospital quickly, you would call the herse – because it had the space to transport a person who was lying down. Well, all of that changed in Columbus, OH, with the Heartmobile, known as the first ambulance. Dr. Sydnee and Justin talk about its development, implementation, and the thrilling end of its ambulatory adventures.Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/Transgender Law Center: https://transgenderlawcenter.org/

My aunt got shingles twice before she was 50. She couldn't convince doctors to give her the vaccine even after the first occurrence before "people your age aren't at risk for shingles." Sigh. And health insurance isn't required to cover titers, so she couldn't prove she needed it.
My very first thing when I walk into a home is where is the bedside commode and can we get you at least sitting on the edge of the bed with some trunk strength
Holy shamoly I'm OT. Purpose., every time I can get somebody out of diapers I claim my fame as the bathroom lady
I know I spelled it wrong but I'm cooking and don't touch my phone, LOL
God, I wish Kerri Fisher and her mom were still alive. She and Darth Vader had the best sense of humor.
If I could hug you I would. I'm a COTA, and I'm embracing our role in IADLs for my clients.
We are experiencing ICE with 12% truancy across general population Jefferson Parish. Public education is a right established (for some at first) in our nation. What trajectory for children who don't get to go to school? Now we will blame those children 10 years later when they can't afford housing and are years behind in reading.
No one ever wants to have to pee and get run off or arrested. I work in New Orleans home health care and since COVID-19 I can barely find a bathroom working with individuals whose bathroom is not a good idea. Why on earth are we insisting on treatment prior to housing?
On the rat poison, I blame my personal hero and national treasure Lily Tomlin, plus Fonda and Parton. I'm sure the consequences for Santa were unintentional.
you'll get my coke zeros outta my cold, dead hands
I mean, how many years did "Lost" insist the fan theories that they were all dead were wrong?
I believe a timely topic at this time would be malnutrition.
At the risk of sounding redundant... no shit, Sherlock. lol
We could prevent so much tradegy by requiring civics and statistics for public and home schooled children to earn an academic high school diploma.
I rarely agree with LA Sen. Bill Kennedy, but I was proud of Louisiana watching that hearing.
Msg is in so many classic American chips like doritos. Who still thinks it is unsafe?!
Dear me, people, can we stay on the theme of this podcast? Our hosts put so much effort and vulnerability into this artform. If you wanted to help instead of simply inciting, you would direct your passion and efforts to platforms where it can hopefully make a difference.
I know you and your family deserve a life, but I really wait with bated breath for your take on the letter to the c. D what you think will happen since I cannot. As a healthcare worker working with the elderly going from home to home like typhoid mary cannot get the vaccine unless I can pay three hundred and fifty dollars
I can't hear fictitious disorder without thinking of Maya Kowalski. How many people suffer because someone got lazy or jaded? It still takes as average of *years* to get an endometriosis dx. Heaven help you, if you actually have something rare, or non-textbook, or have difficulties communicating because it ND. I was told I must be a drug addict because I was tired. I'd have to be awake to seek drugs, not sleeping 12+ hours a day. Turns out hyperthyroid can present as textbook hypo. Why?!
Should one want to read more on this subject, it is important that one reads the book "The Sting of the Wild" by Justin O Schmidt, and not "The King of Sting" by Coyote Peterson, who is at best a cheap wannabe.
