The beautiful, rugged landscape of Rancho Mababi is loaded with wildlife diversity. I joined outdoor writer Brad Fitzpatrick there, along with several other great friends and outdoor industry professionals, to go after Coues deer while testing a new bolt-action rifle from Mossberg. After wrapping up our first-ever hunt for these cagey little whitetails, Fitzpatrick and I got together to recap our comprehensive experience. We share stories from the hunt, along with helpful advice for rookie Coues deer hunters. Follow Brad Fitzpatrick on Instagram.Watch the video from my Coues deer hunt.Jump guide:1:47: Introduction and background of Brad Fitzpatrick6:00: Unique opportunities as an outdoor industry professional9:05: Exploring places through the lens of a hunter12:32: Why hunt Coues deer?16:52: Preparing for a Coues deer hunt32:30: Mossberg Patriot rifles38:31: The hunt recap39:00: Ted Jaycox of Tall Tine Outfitters39:25: Crossing the border46:40: First deer down51:00: First impressions of Coues deer + mountain lion encounter52:20: Coues deer hunting tips and strategies 1:06:15: Cooking Coues deer over an open fireSee my regular updates and share your feedback @thehungerofficial on Instagram, or e-mail thehungerpodcast@gmail.com.*Podcast soundtrack by Jamie Dougherty*
Alice Valenzuela and her husband, Roberto, were successful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs living among the "lifestyles of the rich and the famous." But they were struck by an epiphany that they didn't want to raise their children with a sense of entitlement, so they jumped ship to Sonora, Mexico, where they started over on Roberto's family ranch with no electricity or running water. In this episode, I sit down with Alice at Rancho Mababi during a Coues deer hunt (watch the video here) to hear the inspirational story, and also discover how hunting was introduced on the ranch.Jump guide:2:22: Welcome to Rancho Mababi5:23: Alice Valenzuela: her family's story of moving to Mexico14:18: Description and history of Rancho Mababi17:50: Managing livestock and making money19:20: How hunting started on the ranch23:40: Alice's experience with birders: "I felt emotionally exhausted when they left."31:45: The challenge and awesomeness of Coues deer hunting35:52: "You guys [hunters] changed our minds."36:21: Alice's take on "dangers" of the Mexico/America border42:00: Cooking with wood fireSee my regular updates and share your feedback @thehungerofficial on Instagram, or e-mail thehungerpodcast@gmail.com.*Podcast soundtrack by Jamie Dougherty*
My family's 130-year old farm in Todd County, Minnesota, is where I first learned to hunt and use a knife to process wild game for the table. My great uncle, Allan Skoglund, is one of the men who mentored me from an early age to understand hunting and respect all that nature has to offer. In this first episode of THE HUNGER podcast, we sit down at "The Farm" to discuss the history of this special place and tell stories about hunting ... including a deer hunt that I just wrapped up down the road, where I tagged a tremendous buck with a muzzleloader (watch the video here). This episode will help you trace the roots of my HUNGER for the outdoors and hunting.Jump guide:4:59: Gritty history of The Farm12:15: The 30-mile walk for butter14:46: Uncle Al's upbringing and going into the Army22:00: Hunting back in the day23:25: Killing pheasants with a car crank24:22: Gun culture and bringing guns to school32:18: How The Farm inspired me to hunt41:30: Traveling to hunt44:35: Processing, cooking and eating wild game1:04:08: My muzzleloader deer hunt and my best buck from The FarmSee my regular updates and share your feedback @thehungerofficial on Instagram, or e-mail thehungerpodcast@gmail.com.*Podcast soundtrack by Jamie Dougherty*
