Description

I have set myself the challenge of interviewing ordinary individuals with exceptional stories in this series...and then again in 10 years to see what kind of life they've lived. At the end of the interview, they will read out a handwritten letter to their future self, outlining what they hope the next 10 years will hold for them along with any words of encouragement through the difficult times.

Will they have found true happiness? Will they achieve their vision and change the world around us? All of this will show that it's not the years in your life, but the life in your years.

Diego is a unique character. Unique in that by age 30, he's done what so few people manage. He has found one goal to focus all his energy on - to become the best freestyle dancer in the UK and the world.

I had the chance to sit down and talk with Johnny Engele - founder of Bayonne Estates, an independent Real Estate agent in London. Johnny's story goes far beyond what his current occupation is now however. By 21 he was already on his 2nd successful business, this time in Financial Services after rising the ranks in a sector where 6ft 5 athletically built black men were rarely seen, let alone heard. He was able to gain the attention of senior execs from the likes of Deloitte and EY who came together to support the idea and business this young man had put together. It was clear that Johnny was excelling beyond what was expected of a 21 year old, and eventually that lack of experience caught up with him. His story isn't one of regret however, but rather accepting that making mistakes is a natural form of progression, if you are ambitious enough.

Jack Munsch is an all-round visual creative. As a filmmaker, director and curator, Jack has leveraged his eye for detail and love for emotive imagery into (at the time of writing) a following and a 500k and counting audience on instagram through his brand Photocinematica.  Speaking with Jack taught me that humility, patience, an open mind and hard work are always rewarded and where it leads you will even be a surprise at times.  One of my favourite stories in this episode is how Jack won a dance competition he entered on Bebo and ended up in the same room as his idols and greatest basketball players of a generation; Lebron, Kobe and Shaq.  This was a fun episode to record and I hope you enjoy it!

The most ordinary people do extraordinary things in the same 24 hours you and I have. So why them? What makes them special? Together, we’ll learn how they started, achieved and overcame obstacles along their journey and the lessons they learnt through the process, so that we too, can be inspired to take action on our own goals and dreams. We’ll look towards the next 10 years of their lives and what they hope to have achieved, ending with a written letter to their future self - outlining their hopes and desires for their own future.

My first guest on the 87000 hour podcast is none other than...ME! I talk about my last 10 years and what brought me to where I am today. This includes what life was like moving to the UK as a 5 year old, my love for hip hop producers and how that led me to experiment creatively from an early age, dropping out of uni during a masters degree in architecture and starting my first business. We then discuss my hopes and dreams for my future self, the lessons I've learnt so far and finally my letter to 30-something year old me 10 years from now.
