Today I’m talking to Ronni Robinson, eating disorder recovery coach, author, free-lance writer and public speaker. Ronni has 16 years recovered from 30 years of binge eating and compulsive eating, starting at the tender age of 9 years old. Ronni also experienced an 8-year abusive relationship whilst struggling with an eating disorder. She has written a book about the entire journey called, Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey, which came out in 2020. The book's purpose is to help support her own recovery going forward, and to act as a helping hand to reach, as she calls it, back into the "fire" and to help pull others out. Ronni was on the podcast back in February 2023, telling her story and the journey she has been on to being a recovery coach today. Do go back and listen to this episode if you’d like to. There’s lots of personal sharing about her journey and it’s an inspiring story about what’s possible in recovery. The link for that episode is in the show notes. Today, we’re going to dive into what really helped Ronni in recovery. Ronni is going to talk about her process in recovering from binge eating and compulsive eating. She is going to share skills and strategies that will give you a deep insight into what is involved in healing a relationship with food and yourself. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.   To find out more about Ronni: - Website: https://www.ronnirobinson.com/ Instagram: @recoverwithronni   Books that Ronni recommends: - ‘Breaking Free from Compulsive Overeating,’ by Geneen Roth ‘Eating in the Light of the Moon,’ by Anita Johnson ‘Goodbye Ed, Hello Me,’ by Jenni Schaefer ‘Intuitive Eating, A Revolutionary Program that Works,’ by Evelyn Tribole and Elysa Resch Overeaters Anonymous Third Edition ‘Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia,’ by Marya Hornbacher   Previous podcast episode with Ronni: -https://harrietfrew.podbean.com/e/eating-disorder-recovery-building-self-worth-and-finding-your-voice-with-ronni-robinson/   Harriet Frew's current offers: - Online 10 Steps to Intuitive Eating Course https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Online Breaking Free from Bulimia  https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html  Eating Disorders Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/eating-disorders-training-with-harriet-frew.html Body Image Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/body-image-training-with-harriet-frew.html

Hello lovely listeners. I am returning to releasing one episode per week for the time being. There is nothing sinister happening! Today I’m talking to Victoria Kleinsman – a Brit living her best life in the Netherlands. Victoria is a food freedom & body love coach, inspirational speaker, podcast host, and writer. She is certified in psychology, spirituality and the science of nutrition and is also inspired greatly in her work, by her own personal experience and walking a tumultuous recovery journey herself. Victoria has overcome anorexia, binge eating disorder, bulimia and an abusive relationship. She struggled for over 20 years with poor body image and disordered eating. But today, Victoria eats whatever she wants, when she wants, in any amount that she wants. She makes food choices from a place of nourishment and pleasure. She is healthy, confident and knows her worth. Her self-love is overflowing from within and she has, as she describes, ‘oodles to give others’. This episode has already been released on Victoria’s Body Love Binge Podcast back in February 2024 – as it was a joint episode that we decided to share on both our podcasts. In this episode, we talk about our own healing journeys and how we have navigated through these. We talk about why people don’t feel good enough and the roots of this in experiences and trauma. We talk about suppressed feelings and how eating disorder behaviours help us cope and keep us trapped. We share the contrast and complexities on the healing road from our different journeys, and how we both are living happier and more fulfilled lives today. This is a truly inspiring and uplifting conversation to provide hope for what is possible in recovery. I hope that you enjoy it. ‘I’m boring’, ‘I’m not intelligent’, I’m unattractive. I’m too this or that……’; these are words heard frequently in the therapy room. And lying underneath these derogatory statements, is a fundamental belief of ‘I’m not good enough’. This inner feeling of unworthiness then permeates every area of life, through choice of relationships, work progress and social engagements. It’s like having a millstone around your neck, as you carry this heavy psychological baggage into every situation. Fundamentally, it causes lingering pain, which you then seek to avoid through eating or not eating, through alcohol, drugs, shopping or workaholism to name a few. The coping strategies bring temporary relief from the turmoil bubbling inside your head.  In this episode, I talk about my own inner feelings of not feeling good enough, which were a root cause of my bulimia. I share tips on how to change this and boost your self-esteem sustainably. Learning to feel enough can be a life-changer in recovery. I hope that you enjoy this episode. If you have an eating disorder, food may have become your number one 'friend' and turn-to.  It might feel as if it is the one thing that you can rely on. It feels soothing and something that is yours to control (or at least it feels like this to begin with). In this episode, I explore the importance of relationships and connection in eating disorder recovery, sharing examples from my own life and offering tips on how to reach out to others, if you are feeling alone right now. I hope that you find it helpful.   This week's sponsors: Conquering Bulimia https://www.conqueringbulimia.com/ Amber Romaniuk:- Website: https://amberapproved.ca/ Podcast: https://amberapproved.ca/podcast   Harriet Frew's current offers: - Online 10 Steps to Intuitive Eating Course https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Online Breaking Free from Bulimia – 20% off with code FREEDOM at checkout https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html  Eating Disorders Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/eating-disorders-training-with-harriet-frew.html Body Image Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/body-image-training-with-harriet-frew.html
Today I’m talking to Linda Åkerlund, all the way from Sweden. Linda is the mother of two girls, who today are 18 and 21 years old.  In January 2021, Linda’s youngest daughter was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. Her recovery journey then lasted for about 2 1/2 years, although she had been ill for about a year before her diagnosis (from aged 13). I think that this is not unusual that eating disorders can often be hidden and it can take time for loved ones to become aware. Linda’s daughter’s treatment model was family-based treatment, which thankfully proved to be an effective approach in this situation. But as a parent with no medical knowledge, understandably, Linda found this situation to be a significant struggle and very overwhelming.  Thankfully, Linda’s daughter has made a full recovery, and her mission is to inspire others through this recovery journey and to particularly underline and talk about the importance of taking care of yourself as a parent, when your child is very unwell. In the episode today, Linda shares about her experience as a mother supporting her daughter, offering encouragement and support to others in this situation. I hope that you find it helpful.   To get in touch with Linda, please email: kerlundesign@gmail.com   This week's sponsor: WeShape https://www.weshape.com/freedom   Harriet Frew's current offers: - Online 10 Steps to Intuitive Eating Course https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Online Breaking Free from Bulimia – 20% off with code FREEDOM at checkout https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html  Eating Disorders Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/eating-disorders-training-with-harriet-frew.html Body Image Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/body-image-training-with-harriet-frew.html

Today I am talking to Jayde Barber. Jayde is the creator and host of the Students of Mind Podcast, a mental health advocate, peer supporter, and entrepreneur in the Los Angeles Area. Since a young age, Jayde has been diagnosed and living with several mental illnesses including anxiety, depression, and anorexia. Although she is not a licensed mental health professional, Jayde’s experience as a patient, family member, and friend of individuals with mental illness has driven her to share her experiences and insights. Through The Students of Mind podcast and across social media, Jayde shares her mental health and recovery journey.  The Students of Mind Podcast was created in March of 2020. On the show, Jayde covers various mental health related topics through interviews with mental health experts and healers, as well as survivors--people like herself who live everyday with mental illness. Students of Mind aims to normalise talking openly about mental health, remove the many barriers that exist to receiving mental health education and resources, reduce the stigma and taboo’s that exist around mental health and mental illness, and express that everyone has mental health that needs to be tended to, just as we tend to our physical health. In today’s episode, Jayde talks about her experience of eating disorder recovery as a Black woman, delving into her journey through the different treatment levels in her eating disorder healing. Jayde is passionate about us all prioritising mental health as much, if not more than our physical health and she explains how she personally does this herself with deep awareness and self-care practices. Jade also dives into how she works on developing a more positive body image, and the strategies she utilises to manage this. Jayde is an incredibly inspiring individual and there’s lots packed into this episode. Today, I’m talking to Dr. Marianne Miller (all the way from San Diego) who has been in the mental health field for 27 years and has specialised in eating disorders for the last 12 years. Marianne was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time (until she left the university) and went into private practice full-time in 2018. Dr. Marianne loves working with eating disorders as a therapist and a coach. She takes a non-diet, feminist approach that helps people of all genders live empowered, authentic lives. She embraces the Health at Every Size model and is LGBTQIAA+ affirming. Dr. Marianne recently launched the Elite Binge Eating Recovery Method, an online binge eating program. It helps high-achieving professionals regain their mental and emotional energy by shifting their relationship with food to be fully present in their life. In this episode today, Marianne talks about self-care and self-soothing and how binge eating can often be a way to regulate emotions and feel better.  Marianne then explores common patterns seen in therapy and tools to help regulate emotions and practice better self-care.  She dives into body image struggles, particularly when you are in a larger body and struggling with binge eating and how to seek out helpful support from professionals, as often people don’t understand binge eating and you might be encouraged to pursue weight loss. This can leave you feeling ashamed, isolated, and alone. Marianne is absolutely passionate about this area of work, and you are going to learn so much from her. I hope that you enjoy it!
