The Love of Cinema

This week, the boys grabbed some beers and kept it positive while they fired off some mini-reviews before featuring a conversation about “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. As part of the random year generator series, 2004 was a great year for movies, with over 50 $100m movies and many likable ones. While “Eternal Sunshine” didn’t gross in the top 70, it may be the year’s greatest film. Props to Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman for giving Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet some juicy roles and incredibly shifty worlds! As for the mini-reviews, the boys can’t speak highly enough of Gore Verbinski’s “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die”, starring Sam Rockwell, and the intense and captivating “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”, and the Academy Award-nominated “It Was Just An Accident”. This week, the boys celebrate their 300th episode with Zack Snyder’s “300”! While the commercial run began in 2007, we figured the premier at the Austin Butt-Numb-A-Thon from December 2006 was enough of an opening to category fraud “300” into our 300th episode. So we did! This week, the boys drink some whiskey and head to 1960 to discuss the less famous slasher movie of the year, “Peeping Tom”! Directed by Michael Powell, this film was a major inspiration for Martin Scorsese and a terror to the people of England, leading to its removal from theaters after only 5 days. Unlike “Psycho”, it was subsequently banned from many other countries… yet today, this movie feels like a tone poem of modern culture. The boys head to prison on Devil’s Island to discuss 1973’s “Papillon”! One of the highest-grossing movies of the year, this true-story account of Steve McQueen’s character befriending Dustin Hoffman’s character to help keep each other alive and prepare their escape from the no-chance-of-return prison, a world away from their native France. Made by the team behind Oscar-winner “Patton” from 1971, shot very much on location, some call this McQueen’s best performance. Before we get into it, John gives us a mini-review of “Hamnet”, the romantic drama film by Chloé Zhao starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, based on the book based on the play. This “dangerous” film is Polanski’s first English-language movie, shot in London during the peak of the French New Wave (Polanski is a Polish-French filmmaker). “Repulsion” offers indie-film groundedness, a gritty reality, noir-inspired neorealism, and an upheaval of social values of the time- sexual liberation, classism, irony, and iconoclasm. This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios’ first films, James Gray’s “The Lost City of Z”. That’s pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle.
