In the latest episode of Behind the Beef, Angus Australia Extension Manager Jake Phillips is taking over! In the latest episode of Behind the Beef we were joined by our fantastic guest, Dr Peter McGilchrist, Associate Professorin Meat Science - School of Environmental and Rural Science at the University of New England. Peter grew up on a cattle property in NSW and has a Bachelor of Rural science from the University of New England (UNE). Following university Peter travelled and also worked at Elders Killara feedlot for a year before moving to Perth WA to complete a PhD at Murdoch University on ‘Selection for muscling affects carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism in beef cattle’ with the Beef CRC. Peter then held a post doctorate research position at Murdoch University with Meat and Livestock Australia working on beef eating quality projects, MSA optimisation and the development of the MSA Index. Following this, he held the position of lecturer in Animal Production Science at Murdoch University and undertook research into factors along the supply chain which impact the eating quality of beef and lamb plus the measurement of carcass yield. In 2017, Peter joined the University of New England. In this episode of Behind the Beef, we are joined by Peter Collins, who hails from central Victoria. Peter has connection with the Angus breed that spans his entire lifetime. Peter is principal of the Merridale Angus Stud, which alongside the seedstock operation also includes a commercial cattle enterprise and a 350-cow dairy. Welcome back to Behind the Beef and Happy 2024! Although it feels we are well and truly back in the swing of things for the year, we are finally back with our first episode of 2024 and for it we were joined by Victorian producer, Brad Gilmour. Brad hails from South West Victoria, where he and his family run a commercial Angus operation alongside a sheep operation. Behind the Beef is back and kicking off with a bang! In this episode of Behind the Beef we were joined by Angus Australia member Rebecca George.  Rebecca and her family are commercial Angus producers from Nevertire in New South Wales.   Rebecca is an active member of the Angus Youth program, and over 20 years has taken part in various activities and events hosted by Angus Youth including the Angus Youth National Roundup and the GenAngus Future Leaders Program.  She has also been a previous recipient of various scholarships through the Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries Program and member of the Roundup Organising and the Angus Youth Consultative Committees.  Most recently however, Rebecca was the recipient of the 2019 Kansas State University Scholarship. This episode of Behind the Beef we were joined by Jono Spence, Director of livestock agency Spence Dix and Co, SA.   Jono is a well-regarded cattleman in the beef business. Jono has a background working in many facets of both stud and commercial sectors of the beef industry. Coordinating the cattle side of the Spence Dix & Co business, Jonathan is also a recognized and experienced auctioneer. In this episode of Behind the Beef we will be joined by Milly Nolan and Cam Parker, who through their roles in the industry are working to make change in terms of bettering and sustaining the industry in different ways.  Milly is a farmer/shearer’s daughter from regional VIC. She has experience across many agricultural supply chains all over Australia, including live export, extensive grazing in Western QLD, wool testing and meat research. Milly travels all over Australia to deliver professional development and supply chain capacity building workshops and now as the Program Manager for The Livestock Collective, Milly is keen to unite the livestock industry and ensure our voice is heard. Cam Parker has had a wide and varied career. After actively contributing to policy setting bodies and representative groups as a producer in Victoria and in Queensland, Cam has shifted to a full-time policy career as Policy Manager at Primary Producers SA, working to bridge the gap between producers and those who influence and make decisions that affect Australian Agriculture. The agricultural industry accounts for 55% of Australian land use, 12% of goods and services exports in 2020–21; 1.9% of value added gross domestic product and 2.5% of employment in 2020–21 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2022). Dr Peter Parnell began his role as Chief Executive Officer at Angus Australia in May 2009 following an extensive career as a Research Scientist and Research Leader with the NSW Department of Primary Industries. In 2021 Dr Parnell quietly announced that he would be retiring from his position of CEO, concluding a near 40-year career serving the Australian cattle breeding industry, with particular interest in the application of genetic improvement technologies in both the registered cattle sector and wider beef industry.
