Welcome to the AusFolkus series of podcasts: Exploring the people and stories behind Australian folk music and dance
In these podcasts I’ll be interviewing many of the musicians, dancers, choristers and teachers from the multitude of folk genres that we are so lucky to be exposed to in this country. These are people who have been in front of you in festivals, concerts and dance demonstrations in some cases for decades. Their names will be well known to you and have in many instances been celebrated by you while watching them or perhaps even participating with them while they ply their wondrous art.
Theme music: Veligdensko Horo sourced from Linsey Pollak's book "Macedonian Folk Music" ( linseypollak.com )

This is Part 2 of a 3 part series of discussions I had with Margaret Walters which details her life in music and song. It's an extraordinary and interesting story which will rivet the listener whether or not you have had close contact with Margaret. Margaret is an Australian folk icon and one well known to festival goers and folk club afficionados in Australia and abroad.
This is a wonderful conversation with an icon in folk music in Australia, Margaret Walters. Listen in for some magnificent surprises and a great chat with a delightful, feisty and oh so talented woman. Margaret is a long time delighter of audiences and an active participant in all things folk in NSW especially. Enjoy it! I know I did when I interviewed her. This is Part 1 of a 2 part series.
This is the second and final episode of my interview with Noel Balfour. Noel is an exemplar in the music industry and in life generally. Noel is 93 years old and is planning his next recording. Noel has been recording music composed by he and his wife Lorna Barry who sadly passed away a few years ago. As well as continuing in his musical career Noel is also a restorer of top value cars. He works on them as a hobby for a friend who imports them in bits and Noel does the complete body work on them. His most recent project was a Ferrari Californian worth over a million dollars. This man just never stops and is a huge inspiration to all of us.
This is a wonderful story about the history of Australian country music from a man who was there from its very early recording days in the 1940's and 1950's. Noel Balfour and his wife Lorna Barry were well known in the music industry. Lorna, who together with Dorothy Davidson formed the Barry Sisters, were regular on Australian television in the late 1950's and early 1960's. They were prolific writers of music with much of their music being embraced nationally and internationally at a time when the communication systems available then were a huge barrier to success of this nature.
The second and final part of a wonderful story by Margaret and Bob Fagan. In this episode you'll be introduced to the two stellar Fagan youngsters, Kate and James, James' exceptionally talented wife Nancy Kerr and all of the Fagan grandchildren. Towards the end of this podcast you will hear how they all end up on stage together. It's a celebratory story about a celebratory family and one that is an exemplar for all of us to revel in and salute.
This is a fun-filled and informative interview with two of Australia's folk royalty, Margaret and Bob Fagan. Margaret and Bob have graced Australia's folk scene for close to 50 years and have been responsible for bringing much magic through their music and subsequently the music of their family members Kate and James (often with wife Nancy Kerr) to audiences in Australia and other parts of the World. This is an engaging story of their lives, and their music, before and after their union which has brought so much pleasure to folk communities everywhere.
A truly heart-warming conversation with Chloé and Jason Roweth to complete this series of 3 podcasts with them. In this conversation you will hear more about their great successes in music and, of core importance to them, the integration of family into their lives as performers. You will hear about their two little ones and how they too are weaving themselves into a wonderful world of family, music and joy. Don't miss this final episode and join me in celebrating a wonderful set of young lives.
Part 2 in the 3 part series of discussions with Chloé and Jason Roweth. Hear about their many performing experiences, the philosophy of performing that has sustained them and revel in the wonderful energy and enthusiasm of this great folk duo.
A wonderful, enthusiastic and passion-laden discussion with Chloé and Jason Roweth detailing their lives before and after they met up to develop their musical union. In this podcast you will hear about their familial beginnings, their musical beginnings and the way they melded together to form their stage act of both song and verse which has delighted many audiences over the years.
This is the second and final part of Danny Spooner's life story as told by his wife Gael Shannon. It contains information not previously heard about Danny's life and times. It's ended with a beautiful version of Eric Bogle's wonderful song 'The Gift of Years'. I couldn't think of a more appropriate ending to this story than this song.
This is the first of a two part podcast with Gael Shannon, wife of the wonderful Danny Spooner who left us in 2017 to sing with the angels elsewhere. Danny recorded his final album 'Home' with me here at Blue Mountain Sound a mere four months before he died. It was a fitting tribute to a land he loved so much. I encourage you to visit Danny's website and purchase as much of his music as you can. While his music lasts for ever, his merchandise may not! Get it while you can. https://www.dannyspooner.com/

Linsey Pollak Part 3

2020-04-2451:36

This is the 3rd and final part of the interview I did with Linsey Pollak who, for many, has been a guiding light and inspiration. Linsey's work has covered many fields and his personal story gives a deep insight into what has made him the creative being that he is. Listen to his story and be captivated by an extraordinary man, instrument maker and designer, activist and performing artist.
This is a full concert about Gallipoli in 1915 and the battle between the Anzacs and the Turkish troops specifically. It contains a narrative as well as a selection of songs in both English (to reflect the Anzac experience) and Turkish. The English songs were all written by Eric Bogle who very kindly gave me his permission to use his songs on this very special concert. There is a very special guest on this podcast too who is well known both nationally and internationally and well loved. He is sadly missed. My island home of Malta also features in this episode. Please make a donation to the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group if you can.
This is part 2 of the 3 part conversation with Linsey Pollak. In this episode Linsey talks about his return from Macedonia to Australia and the journey upon which he embarks up to the time of his involvement with transcultural band Churinga. The story continues and it's a great one!
This discussion took place over Zoom during the Covid19 pandemic. Linsey Pollak is a well known musician, instrument maker and political and social activist. His story is a great example of how lives can be changed into creative explosions by circumstances that can happen to any of us.
This is the final part of this dialogue with Gary Dawson. In this podcast Gary goes into the history of folk dance and its movement since pre-Renaissance times to the present. He also articulates his philosophy of dance and the relationship between dance and community and the respective evolution of both to modern times.
In this episode I'm with Gary Dawson, folk dancer and dance teacher extraordinaire. Gary has spent much of his lifetime both dancing and teaching the dance to the music of many countries in the Balkans including Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Hungary, Croatia, Greece and Bulgaria. Gary's passion for the dances of this region has been deeply embedded in his life's philosophy which centres on unity through diversity. This is a story of a journey starting in the Mid-West of NSW and still continuing through the many nations of this fascinating part of Eastern Europe.
