A federal holiday for the very first time. Juneteenth is the date (June 19, 1865) that enslaved Black persons in Texas, specifically in Galveston, first learned that they were free after decades and centuries of enslavement. Enslavement had been proclaimed over for more than two years before enslaved Black people in Texas were told. The date of June 19, 1965 however, did not spell the complete end to enslavement in the US of Black people by white men. The poisonous and dishonest narrative some peddle now is that Juneteenth was the end of enslavement. It was NOT.
