Saturday’s edition of THE POLITICRAT daily #podcast: Today Is Juneteenth Across The USA—Independence And Freedom Day…A Day To Educate And Commemorate Today is Juneteenth across the United States of America. A federal holiday for the very first time. Juneteenth is the date (June 19, 1865) that enslaved Black persons in Texas, specifically in Galveston, first learned that they were free after decades and centuries of enslavement. Enslavement had been proclaimed over for more than two years before enslaved Black people in Texas were told. The date of June 19, 1965 however, did not spell the complete end to enslavement in the US of Black people by white men. The poisonous and dishonest narrative some peddle now is that Juneteenth was the end of enslavement. It was NOT. Omar Moore goes to the specifics of Juneteenth, the actual history, the continuation and attachment of events that came after 1865 and continue beyond 2021. An episode you do not want to miss. Moore) about 1963 San Francisco, Black people and James Baldwin’s visit to the Bay Area city in California during the spring of that year. Released in the U.S. in February 1964 on KQED, a PBS television affiliate in San Francisco, “Take This Hammer” had 15 minutes gutted from its 59-minute length due to KQED board members being afraid of the truth of what the documentary had to say.
