Kat Kennedy is an artist manager, working with the likes of We Are Scientists, Emeli Sandé and Liz Lawrence.  She has built a renowned reputation for herself within the industry, working at BigLife Management for over 16 years.  Kat was selected as a participant in the 2020-21 Keychange programme and often speaks at various conferences and industry events.  This conversation was fascinating, speaking to someone with so much experience working in the music industry was really eye-opening.  Generally, I am surrounded by others who are relatively 'new' to the industry, however, speaking with Kat put a lot of my thoughts into perspective.  In this episode, we talk about how she started at BigLife, her journey through student radio, as well as what being a manager consists of.  I hope you LOVE this episode, if you're wanting to get into working directly with artists in a management capacity, this episode is definitely for you. Megan Graye is the founder and editor in chief of Vocal Girls Club, a publication which focuses on creating diversity within the music industry, championing new artists, with a focus on marginalised genders.  Through events, written articles and their podcast, they help to showcase a huge variety of up and coming artists, helping more women and non-binary creatives to get into the music industry, through their platform.  Megan founded the platform in 2020 after years of wanting her own challenge; she had always created content but wanted her own project, feeling frustrated by the lack of women working in music, Vocal Girls was naturally born.  Megan is also a radio show host on Islington Radio and has a huge amount of experience working within the creative world.  This podcast episode left me feeling so inspired, I  wanted to throw my whole body into making and doing after talking to Megan, I hope you feel the same! Orla Gartland released her debut album 'Woman on the Internet' last August, reaching number 10 in the Official Charts, released as an Independent Artist.  No label, just Orla and her legend manager Claire.  We talk all about how we met back in 2019, how she finds herself working as a musician without a label, as well as her experience touring as a session musician for Dodie.  As I type this Orla is sitting next to me, as we are currently on tour across Europe !! Eliza Williams, known on socials as Doolittle Illustrations is absolutely smashing it as a freelance illustrator.  Her unique and fun illustration style has allowed her to grow a very organic plethora of clients, regularly working with Spotify on their 'Our Generation' project.  The project has taken the form of posters and installations at festivals such as Latitude, as well as exclusive artwork to celebrate moments in artists careers, such as Holly Humberstone at The BRIT Awards.  Eliza has illustrated artists such as Girl in Red, Matilda Mann and many more.  Eliza was born in Australia and lives in Melbourne; throughout this conversation, we talk about how she found her illustration style, stumbled into working in the music industry and also finds inspiration for her illustrations. Tina Hizon, commonly known as Tina Keys is a true icon within the music industry, working as a MD and Session Musician to some crazy cool artists.  Her bio is incredibly impressive, with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Roger Taylor, Clean Bandit, Maisie Peters and Dua Lipa as just some of the talent she has played alongside.  In this episode, we discuss Tina's backup plan of accounting in case music didn't work out, as well as the ups and downs of being a self-employed musician.  If you're wanting to start session playing, and don't know where to start, or if like me, you're fascinated by the people who work behind the scenes in music, you're going to love this episode.  I truly think this is one of my favourite ever episodes! Kirsten Evans is a British composer who has most recently completed working in the music departments for the Hulu Original 'I am Greta' and the new Marvel movie 'Morbius' during her first year as a freelance media music composer.  She has co-composed and been the vocalist for Wales' national entry to the Venice Biennale in 2017, which then toured the UK after it's 5 month stay in Venice with over 30,000+ visitors.  Kirsten is the founder of two start up companies, ‘Soundbake’ plans to help break down the masculine undercurrent of the virtual instrument market, whereas ‘Uglicat’ is a coaching business that helps new freelance musicians, who struggle to monetise their skills in an achievable, profitable and fulfilling way. Kirsten reached out to me via email and it was so lovely to hear about an industry which I personally know so little about.  The general consensus throughout this episode is, do not be worried if you send hundreds of emails and no one gets back, they may well reply over the course of time and if not, pester them!  Kirsten is an incredible talent, working in a very male dominated industry, with 94% of box office scores being written by men in 2018.  Please lap up all information you can from this episode and I hope you leave feeling as inspired as I did when recording. Dani Bennett Spragg is a recording engineer and mixer based in London.  She currently works primarily out of boutique North-West London studios Hoxa HQ & Toast Studios, working with artists such as Palace, The Amazons, IDLES and Circa Waves.  Stumbling into the industry aged 18, after doing work experience with industry legend Flood, Dani fell head over heels, learning on the job before landing her first full time role. I have known Dani for a few years, first meeting in April 2019.  I’ve admired her work and drive from afar, it was lovely to record this interview and catch up on the last 12 months.  Despite the world being upside down, it seems Dani has been working harder than ever, mixing tracks for The Rolling Stones and working on a handful of new material for some incredible artists.  Dani was named as 'Breakthrough Engineer of the Year' at the MPG Awards in 2019 and she was also nominated for the 2021 MPG Award for 'Recording Engineer of the Year'. Zuzu is an incredible artist from Liverpool, creating noisy, infectious tunes which show her passion and love for guitar riffs.  Writing music from the age of 7, she has had a love and drive to become a musician for years, signing her first publishing deal by the age of 18.  Zuzu has had an incredible career so far, touring with artists such as The Courteneers, Yonaka and Ten Tonnes. I’ve known of Zuzu for years, she is good friends with my lovely pal Lauran Hibberd so I reached out via Instagram to see if she’d be keen to have a natter.  I was thrilled when she agreed as I think her strong opinions and thoughts about the music industry would make a wonderful addition to the series.  In this episode we talk about her time touring with The Courteeners and how it shaped her world as a female musician within the industry, we also discussed how important her fans are to her and how she communicates with them via Facebook. Melody J Myers is a music writer based in California, USA, who writes for some brilliant indie mags such as Underground Zine, Buzz Kill Mag and UK Safe and Sound.  Pre-Covid, Melody was working within bookings, helping to find venues and unknown artists, researching new music and finding more about her local music scene.  She is also pretty nifty with a camera, shooting gigs and diversifying her skillset.   I have never met Melody in person, we've known each other for two years or so after she wrote an article of me in Buzz Kill Mag, when they released their first print edition.  She is such a full of life individual, with a strong passion for the visual arts and journalism.  It was SO lovely to catch up via zoom and hear her story into the music industry. Sarah Corcoran is an incredibly talented musician, living in Ireland and working as part of the band, Pillow Queens.  They have just self-released their debut album, In Waiting, which has been a global success and has seen them grace American TV, with James Corden, in recent months.  I personally think the album is phenomenal, it touches on a lot of themes that run close to my heart, and as a very powerful piece of writing. Sarah and I were put into contact by her PR, a lovely lady called Amy, a couple of months ago now; it has been a little while since this chat happened, however the excitement and joy is still very true.  In this episode we talk about the importance of radio playing women and non-binary artists, as well as how to go about releasing an album without a label supporting you.  We also talk about finding your voice within social media and the role that gigging and finding a support network plays in establishing a band. Grace Goslin is a freelance journalist and DJ based in London.  We met nearly two years ago at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, I was shooting images for the collective she part owns, Femme Collective.  Grace is an absolute ball of fun and laughter, she is such a character and a delight to chat with throughout this podcast episode. Blossom Caldrone is a music maker from Gloucestershire, attending Brit School a few years back. She is bright, vibrant and excellent at her craft, making tunes which are catchy and fun - I instantly fell in love with her wonderful personality and unique visual portrayal online. As well as being a musician, Blossom is also the founder of Diana Listens, an online blog which originated from weekly gig nights.  As soon as I heard her latest single, Girlfriends, I knew that I must chat with Blossom - we had such a wonderful chat and it absolutely made my day. In this episode we talk about the importance of having a creative support network and creating your own opportunities, whether that be starting a podcast or founding your own blog to write about up and coming artists. Blossom speaks often about how if the opportunity isn’t there, all you have to do is make it yourself. Lizzie Knott and Rosie Smith are two very talented illustration artists, who I worked with for the creation of Noisy Women merch, which was released at the end of 2020.  With most of the collection now sold out, we wanted to record a podcast chatting through the collection and how the ideas came about.  Lizzie and Rosie are two individuals who I found because of the pandemic, we have been connected on Instagram for months, often chatting about our individual businesses and how we have been affected because of covid. Lizzie Knott is an illustrator who recently graduated from Cambridge School of Art, receiving Highly Commended in the World Illustration Awards 2020: New Talent, Design, Product and Packaging.  Her work has been seen globally through articles for The BBC - she is a rising talent and I feel very honoured that her designs are being worn by so many of you!! Rosie Smith is the founder of Lazy Disco, a Brighton based jewellery company.  Rosie is a very quirky and fun individual, creating unique designs from polymer clay.  Her small business, when I first discovered her, has since bloomed and exploded into a huge scale business, with her products selling out within minutes.  Being inspired by doodling, daydreaming and pop music, I was thrilled to work with her on the tote bag design. Laviea Thomas is a music and culture writer for publications such as CLASH and Gigwise, but is also the founder of House of Wax, a zine and online space set up to celebrate creatives of colour.  I have known of Laviea for many years through the music scene in London, however we surprisingly have never met in person.  This did not stop us from having a wonderful conversation about everything music and culture related, discussing the highs and lows of working within a white male dominated industry. Gabrielle is a fellow podcaster and music industry expert, with 6 years of experience under her belt.  Hailing from Scotland, Gabrielle worked for many years at Domino Records as a Regional Radio PR and Label Assistant, before moving on to VEVO, where she worked as part of the European Team as the Music and Talent Manager for the UK.  She founded her podcast, Bitesize Bodacious Babes last year and also shifted online when Covid hit, just like myself.  Our podcasts have a very similar ethos, demystifying the music industry and helping to inspire other women to get involved in the process. Melatrois consists of Lois Browne, Joy Warmann and Zoe Charlery, who host their own radio show on Reform Radio once a month, on a Tuesday between 12-2pm.  They are a group of down to earth and wonderful people who showcase incredible musical talent across genres.  I was introduced to the group through my housemate Nana and completely fell in love with the comfortable and familiar feel of their voices and show. Individually however, Lois, Joy and Zoe are a powerhouse of talent, working with a huge array of talent within both the music and arts industries.   Lois works as a Label Assistant at London-based SA Recordings, the record label arm of Spitfire Audio.  Joy works as a European Project Manager at Secretly Group as well as hosting a monthly jam night with Imaginary Millions.  Zoe is currently researching for their MSc, but also working as a committee member of artist led initiative, Transmission Gallery and a Producer to Scottish based contemporary performance artist, Claricia Parinussa. Abbie and I have a mutual friend, the delightful Sarah Gosling from BBC Devon and Introducing in the South West.  Abbie is someone who I have quietly admired from afar for a few years now, I adore her drive and passion for the music industry, but not only that, her various avenues to her job and her hard working attitude.  Abbie McCarthy is a Radio and TV Presenter, hosting shows on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing in Kent, as well as BBC Sport. Abbie founded Good Karma Club, a monthly gig night at The Sebright Arms in London, which has led to tours around the country and a stage at SXSW in Texas, USA, featuring some of the best up and coming artists.  This episode felt really special to record, Abbie and I had such a delightful time recording and we chatted for nearly two hours.  I was surprised we had never crossed paths before now.  Definitely have a listen if a career in Radio or Broadcasting is up your street.
