Host Laurie Barkman, The Business Transition SherpaⓇ, is joined by Susan Keller, Founder of Entrepreneurial Executives. Susan advises businesses from startups to publicly traded companies on growth strategies and transactions.  Laurie talks with Susan as a fellow M&A Advisor about why it's valuable for entrepreneurs to get an early start with transition planning. A great place to begin is conducting a thorough business evaluation to identify what needs improvement in the business. Set an intention to separate yourself from your business to see what aspects of your culture and values a potential buyer might want to preserve. Top 5 takeaways: Complete a comprehensive business assessment to identify operational gaps and formulate a robust transition plan. Approach projects from the perspective of a potential buyer to enhance the business's appeal in the market. Create a clear CEO job description to recognize dependencies and optimize the business's value. Conduct thorough due diligence on potential partners to ensure a seamless and beneficial transaction. Succession Stories host Laurie Barkman, The Business Transition Sherpa(™), welcomes Elliot H. Kallen, President of Prosperity Financial Group, a financial planning and advising firm. Elliot is a three time CEO with a passion for working with family businesses to achieve a meaningful life beyond financial measure. Listen in as they discuss the emotional aspect of family businesses and the hypothetical umbilical cord that’s hard to sever. It could be a reason why family business owners want their kids to take over– so they can stay close to the action. Or, they may be reluctant to let go of their company baby and plan to work until they die.  Does the next generation even want to own the business, or do they want the wealth from an exit and the ability to move on? And what’s your retirement strategy? Make it more than watching four hours of TV a day. Elliot is a proponent of creating a meaningful life. He shared the heart-wrenching story of his youngest son’s death by suicide, and how he’s honoring his memory by taking action to help other families. A Brighter Day charity unites stress and depression resources with teens and their parents with the goal of stopping teen suicide.  Enjoy this Succession Stories episode about meaningful transitions with Elliot Kallen. Succession Stories host Laurie Barkman, The Business Transition Sherpa(™), welcomes Rocco Cozza, Founder and Managing Partner of Cozza Law Group, for a conversation spotlighting a topic owners may be starting to think about, but not yet talk about – business legacy and succession planning.  Learn key framing questions to help you think about business legacy and implications for planning your succession. “What do you want people to say about your business when you're no longer here?” It’s important to plan for your exit from the beginning. If you want to build a business to stay within your family and you want your kids to be involved, have that discussion early and often.  And if you're not giving yourself a minimum of five years for exit planning, you won’t have enough time to address risk levers and do the planning you need. I love this podcast. This is one of my favorite lockdown-period discoveries. It has helped me to make exercise walks go by much more quickly while also giving me a lot to think about and delve into long after I'd already listened to an episode. The guests on this podcast have been greatly varied. There is a common theme, of course, but the guests are at different points in their careers, have different goals, come from different backgrounds, bring different perspectives and offer different lessons learned. One of the episodes has even given me a new mantra that I have used several times since then to remind myself when I hit a challenge. "It's not hard, it's just new." My sincere thanks to Laurie Barkman for helping me learn a little bit these past several months.
