Eri breaks down what master recordings are and why they're so important in the music business. We also get into how Taylor Swift's new record deal made history by benefiting other artists, and why she is so disappointed by Scooter Braun acquiring her old record label Big Machine Records (which was founded by Swift's former friend music executive Scott Borchetta). In July 2019, a jury found Katy Perry guilty of copyright infringement for plagiarizing an eight note ostinato present in Flame's single 'Joyful Noise'. Her attorney filed for an appeal in October to overturn the ruling or be granted a new trial. On March 17, 2020 Judge Christina Snyder reversed the jury's judgment against Perry and her team for copyright infringement. She ruled that by law, 'Dark Horse' did not copy the Christian rap song, and that there was nothing unique or rare about the ostinatos in question. Katy and the defendants no longer owe Flame $2.78 million in damages, and it seems that the legal battle between 'Dark Horse' and 'Joyful Noise” is over, for now...
