I'm not sure what you thought about when you were growing up.  I dreamt of a veil, getting married and then having kids. That was the dream and I didn't think about another way, why would I? No until I met my husband and because of aggressive cancer treatment it leave him infertile, not able to have his own children, and so we researched into sperm donation.  If it wasn't for the gift of sperm donors we wouldn't have been able to have a family.   This episode raises the issues of a declining donation list in Australia and I speak with a sperm donor to understand why he donated and what it means to him.  We discuss the current laws and what it means to the donor recipients. I'm forever grateful for our donor and every donor and I will always advocate in this space.  Do you think the laws will change and the way donors are compensated?  Have you registered for the All About Fertility Virtual Expo 2021? Shhhhh! Do you feel like that sometimes when you hear the word thrush or yeast infection?  What about bacterial vaginosis (BV)? Open the floor and swallow me up!  However it's a common in women's health and yet we don't discuss it, perhaps we don't feel the need to discuss it because there's lots of over the counter medication we can purchase.  Or is it just like fertility, miscarriages, abortion and other women's health are taboo subjects?  I'd like to change that of course, so I speak with Cassandra Woollett to open up the convestation. Cassandra is a Fertility Educator accredited with Natural Fertility NZ who runs her own Fertility clinic in Christchurch NZ.  She works with clients throughout NZ and has a large International client base.  She works on line with women and their partners to help them learn about their fertility to either maximise their chances of conceiving or to avoid pregnancy in a natural way,  teaching the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family planning. Cassandra is also the National Clinical Supervisor for Natural Fertility NZ and is responsible for: auditing NZ Fertility Educators professional practice, training of new educators, providing ongoing training and clinical support to educators.  She has been an educator for 21 years.  Cassandra originally trained as a Registered Nurse working in the hospital system and then as a Public Health Nurse working in schools and with families. My guest Akua Ankrah aka Jane Ankrah, is a fertility advocate who is passionate about; Educating people about infertility with an aim to de-stigmatise people’s approach and thoughts to infertility. Helping people realise their dreams of being parents in which ever form they choose. Educating women to advocate for themselves, and, finally, Advocating for infertility causes such as insurance coverage. She's a mother to two lovely girls and mom to a schnoodle dog son Buddy Ankrah, her girls were born out of IVF and surrogacy. Akua says... "As IP’s ( intended parents) we had an amazing journey and experience with our GC. Since starting our surrogacy journey, we are constantly being asked for surrogacy advice . The constant support we give to people as well as the need to help create a wonderful experience for potential IP’s led my family and I to start a surrogacy agency and a foundation that will be used to help educate, advocate and offer fertility treatments to families that have very limited resources. My family’s very existence with the exception of our only schnoodle son, was all made possible thanks to Assistant Reproductive Technology (ART)." If you're trying to have a family via assisted reproductive technology goal is to have healthy embryos that implant into the uterus which turns into a healthy baby. Have you ever wondered once the egg and sperm are in the lab who is behind the magic?  Meet Lucy Lines.  She's an Embryologist turned Fertility Project Manager and Guide, creator of Two Lines Fertility, wife, and mother of 2 little people. She helps women and couples who are trying to conceive to create the families they are dreaming of,  and (if they need it) helps them to understand the overwhelming field of assisted conception. She comes backed with over 20 years experience in the fertility field - 12 years as a clinical embryologist and global customer support embryologist, 5 years in GP education and 3 1/2  years working one on one with women and couples, supporting their individual fertility journeys  - Over all those years she has held literally millions of embryos and helped to create thousands of families! When she’s not supporting women to become Mums (and men to be Dads), you’ll usually find her having a coffee with friends or juggling the work-from-home Mum stuff or maybe even sleeping (which is her super-power!) She shares her experience and knowledge about what happens in the labs in order to create the ingredient to achieve family dreams. Technology is always evolving, it's mind-blowing.  The donor programme will also interest me because my husband and I used a donor, so I'm always interested to hear the next development in the industry.  I came across Fenomatch and became fascinated with the technology and caught up with Joshua who is the product owner at Fenomatch. Fenomatch is a company dedicated to improving the donor selection process for IVF patients. The Fenomatch algorithm allows doctors to assign donors a score based on their phenotypic facial resemblance to the recipient, increasing the degree of resemblance between parents and donor-assisted children. Their platform, which also includes AI ethnicity verification and one-click comparison of carrier screening results, is used at over 100 clinics around the world. Since 2018, Fenomatch has helped over 7,500 families. We know that there isn't one way of having a child.  Many of us need that extra help to achieve our family dreams and we need the amazing support of donors.  For those looking for an egg donor the waiting list in Australia via an IVF clinic is long and many do not provide the service to find you an egg donor.  For those's seeking an egg donor they look to family, friends or travel overseas to a clinic with an egg donor programme. However, with COVID-19 and the restriction on travel, traveling overseas for treatment might seem far away.  But what if there was another way?  I speak with Genevieve Uys founder of Traveling Donors. Traveling Donors is an international boutique egg donor agency specializing in known egg donor cycles. Founded in December 2011 by Genevieve a known egg donor to 4 families. Genevieve has personally donated in Brisbane Australia twice. Traveling Donors has a database of over 500 international egg donors, as well as a newly formed local database of 30 young altruistic known egg donors within Australia.  They have successfully helped hundreds of international intending parents in 10 different countries and facilitated over 60 known donor cycles within Australia.  They understand the challenges faced on the journey to parenthood especially within Australia and pride themselves on providing a compassionate, affordable and transparent donor program. Traveling Donors care equally about the well-being of both our intending parents and our egg donors. When you're on a fertility journey the one thing you have in common with the other person is the desire to become parents.  We all have a story to share, even if you don't think it matters, I assure you, your story matters to someone, your journey is important and to share it is the gift so it strengthens the next person to continue and push through. I had the privilege of hearing and reading Beck and Leonie's story.   It's a journey that would leave you in awe of the special bond that two women will have forever.  Beck has a condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which means she was born without a uterus but has her ovaries and can produce eggs.  Her only option to have a family of her own would be via surrogacy.   Enter Leonie a person with a heart to see her friend experience life to the full, which included having her own family.  These women documented their journey and wrote a book called "Little Ray of Sunshine" to share the ups and downs and give hope to other women diagnosed with MRKH.  There is light, there is hope and there is support. If you have MRKH or would like to get more information to support someone please head to: https://www.mrkhaustralia.org/ To purchase Little Ray of Sunshine head to https://www.alittlerayofsunshine.net/ Contact the ladies via the website above.
