This show is dedicated to my old friend Ricky Powell who passed away Feb. 1st 2021. Ricky is a legendary photographer who captured so many rising stars during hip hop's golden age. Specifically and perhaps his most iconic photographs are of the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC during their 1987 tour together. He has published a number of books featuring his photography, most notably and my personal favorite is "Public Access - Ricky Powell Photography 1985-2005"
I had the pleasure of meeting Ricky in 1997 and over the years we shared many good times. He was always quick with a joke, he was charming, he had style that was uniquely his own and while his memory lives on through his work, he will be missed greatly. Rest in peace brother.
This episode is a zesty full bodied blend of jazz and funk with notes of sweet soul.
Includes: Dizzie Gillespie 20%, Leon Russell 10%, Odetta 10%, Eddie Harris 10% and more 50%
The title of this episode once again combines a band name (The Nude Party) with a song name (Moods). It's a title that fits this set well, as there are several contrasting "moods" featured throughout, while still maintaining an overall "party" vibe that is sure to keep you grooving the whole time.
Included in this episode are tracks from: The Nude Party, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Shannon Shaw, Bummers and more!
A few of the selections here may not be categorically defined as "psychedelic" but what is psychedelic music? How do you define it? Do you need to take drugs to listen to it? Are the musicians on drugs? Do you need to wear sandals? Will it give you brain damage? Is it illegal? So many questions, I don't know.
Included on this set are tracks by: Mr. Elevator, Moon Duo, Kikagaku Moyo, Minami Deutch and more!
Original Air Date: 1/5/2021
Like last weeks show, the title of this episode combines a song name (Fuzzy Logic) by Ghost Funk Orchestra, with an album name (Satis Factory) by Mattiel, and it features an assorted blend of contemporary funk, chill vibes and good ol' Rock & Roll. Also included on this set are tracks from: Gitkin, Traffik Island, Yin Yin and more!
The title of this episode is a combination of band names that are included on this set. Night (Night Beats), Light (La Luz), Motel (Savoy Motel). It features an array of contemporary funky sounds that are equally loud as they are breezy. Also included here are tracks by: The Pro-Teens, Shopping and Orions Belte among others. Enjoy your stay!
"Chains and Black Exhaust" is probably the best funk rock compilation of all time. Released in 2002 without a track list or any artist credits and boasting only a picture of an old biker bar in Chicago, it quickly became a topic of curiosity and was immediately sought after by collectors and dj's alike. It was compiled by the crew at Memphix Records, who dug deep into the 45 vault and came up with some really heavy funk rock grooves from the 1970's Black Rock music scene. And it's full of enough reverb and fuzztone to make your head spin. Enjoy!
Jump into the fire with this scorching mix of alternative rock. Featuring tracks by Joy Division, X, Johnny Thunders and more! (WARNING: These tracks are Hot)
